HYPOKRAS - INTERVIEW

Welcome to the new death metal holochaust, HYPOKRAS is a great death metal revelation coming from FRANCE, one of the best agressive acts of the new european death generation. The first full length “Dead & Hungry”, released by WARPATH records, is a masterpiece of raw, crude and intempestive brutal death. Krepuskulum interview Deinos (guitar/bass).

KREPUSKULUM -  HYPOKRAS exist since 1997, talk to us about the underground path of the band.

DEINOS - The idea to create HYPOKRAS entered our hheads in 97, we were not involved anymore in any band at this time and it was something very frustrating for us. Being both (Rhikou & myself!) very keen on good old death-metal from the early 90 and aiming to carry on this way, it quickly resulted by the recording of our first demo, "terror 1" in 98. This recording has been made with use of a drum machine and with the helpfull hand of our friend Stephane Elkine on the production. The demo received good responses from fanzines and we decided to record 3 years later "Dead & Hungry" which rapidly ended up with a deal under WARPATH RECORDS.

HYPOKRAS is a curious name, what is the real meaning of these name?

In reality, it's a medieval drink based on wine which you can taste all along summer in many french towns celebrating medieval times. The official factory for this product is located in Ariege. But there are many small scale productions.

In some musics of the debut masterpiece “Dead & Hungry” we can listen some narrative introductions in french, Is it a influence of horror movies??

In a way these intro are here to create an atmosphere for each title. Most of the tracks are directly influenced by classical topics used in death-metal, it can be fictions inspired by horror movies or realities mixed with religious topics. It's something I enjoy, our music provides my dark and perverted phantasms.

Where come from the inspiration to write lyrics like “Symphony for The Hanged Priest” and “Deceased in Alcoholik Orgasm”?

This is the same idea than on the previous answer. "Symphony for the hanged priest" is inspired by a Lucio Fulci's movie and it's also a song dealing with total anti-religion and which give as a solution the total annihiliation of the religious caste. Concerning "deaceased in alcoholik orgasm", it's a kind of report about a booze up sessions the way we enjoy them.

The great mark of HYPOKRAS music is the intense and creative guitar riffs, where come from the influences to create these riffs?

All music I listen to influence me in different levels. I don' t care about this kind of details, if one of my song can remind another band, I don't care, the most important thing is the power and the feeling delivered by the track. Being innovative is not my priority, I don't pretend to create something new in metal music, too many bands think they invented something new in their music but they play with always the same old musical elements everybody use. You must be honest through your music.

In your opinion what are the ten best albums of the death metal history and what are the ten best death metal acts now?

I try to answer your questions: Here are according to me the 10 most important albums: MORBID-ANGEL "altars of madness", ENTOMBED "left hand path", MASSACRE "from beyond", GRAVE "into the grave", DEATH "scream bloody gore", DEICIDE "legion", UNLEASHED "where no life dwells", BOLT-THROWER "realms of chaos", VADER "black to the blind", DISMEMBER "Like An Ever Flowing...". Concerning the top 10 of nowadays best releases, I would say: HYPOKRAS "Dead & Hungry", BOLT-THROWER "honour, valour, pride", DEICIDE "in torment in hell", KRISIUM "conquerors of armaggeddon", HYSTERIA "abyssal plains of chaos", VADER "revelations", HORRID "reborn", NOCTIFERIA "par aspera", CANNIBAL CORPSE "gore obssessed", VOMITORY "revelation nausea".

7 – The HYPOKRAS music are very aggressive and brutal, what do you think about the new wave of melodic death and black metal music, including female voices and classic touches?

I appreciate many bands from different metal styles, I like european bands with their "melodic touch", the same I like brutal style from US bands. I'm not very keen on bands using keyboard but bands like THYRFING or DIMMU BORGIR manage to use them in a good way. But to be honest, I'm more into keeping the banner of old extremes metal held high.

Did you play some gigs?

No, we never played live due to the fact that we haven't a drummer able to play what intend to play on stage, maybe later.

If you like footbal, What do you think about the France team elimination…? (We are brasilians…)

I totally don't care about football, on the other hand I can confess that I'm satisfied the french team has been defeated because they bored us to death behaving like superstars since the last mundial.

The cover art of “ Dead & Hungry” are very beautifual and symbolic, talk to us about the meaning of it and about the artist behind this great art.

It's the work of the evil one... This design illustrate a kind of birth, a demonik entity giving birth to the beast HYPOKRAS. The skull symbolising our music and the fact that nothing remains, except our art, in our case our extreme music.

Thank you for the interview! Give the last HYPOKRAS words to the death metal maniacs around the world.

I invite all brazilian metalheads to listen our first album, don't hesitate to contact me (particularly you, young maidens in string underwear!), thanx you for the support, adichats.
