DIVINE

DIVINE is a brasilian band that drinks of several influences that empty space of the English Rock to Guitar, with something of Brazilian rock of the eighties. The members of the band have polemic ideas on the rock and the Brazilian music and they threw until an onlooker and contusing manifest called manifesto BAROQUE TRASH where expose theirs visions. KREPUSKULUM interviewed WILTON (Guitarist).

 
Is our impression or do DIVINE'S letters involve a lot of  Dadaistic aesthetic ????

Wilton - Certainly. Claudio creates in an erratic way and he is always speaking about the dadas. The first sketches of the letters are chaotic and very long. During the rehearsals the texts are cut and fit in the melody. I imagine that Claudio accumulates several references day by day during yours and plays everything in the paper following a line not very defined . The results are very good.


In the manifesto BAROQUE TRASH writing for members of the band did notice a certain tendency to defend elements of the Brazilian culture forming an alliance them of form antropophagic with the global culture, doesn't a certain incoherence exist in that proposal?? In the sentence " AGAINST THE IDIOT NACIONALISM THAT ATTRIBUTES THE MIXTURES OF THE FOLKLORE AND DISTORTED GUITARS THE STATUS OF PRAISEWORTHYRADICALISM" . they are referring to things as the movement MANGUE BEAT and RAIMUNDOS... What do think of these bands?

Wilton -It is not contradictory. Actually, culturally speaking, the globalization always existed. Where did our more traditional rhythms come from? Of out. The problem is as the information is processed. The impersonators that find to be possible to simulate an incompatible reality here with ours exist. I know that is strange a rock band to defend the national culture, but I think differences exist there. We didn't get dressed like Beastie Boys. Healthy Claudio's letters full of references to the Brazilian culture. On the other hand, it also exists the tendency of if carnavalizar the brasilidade. Things of a carnival and Baroque Brazil par excellence. He/she sins him for excess or for an attempt of simulating a brasilidade that is not had. I imagine that the Mangue Bit, that I appreciate plenty, it is inserted in the first alternative and Raimundos on Monday. The first sin for the left-handed intrusion of the rock in its music. It lacks reference. The seconds were opportunists. They don't know anything besides the basic rock. We see that direct in the bands that mixed national elements with rock, hardcore, etc. we Tried to think regarding our world and not to create imaginative worlds that hover outside between our reality and the one of the other lands.

Is the sound of the band a violent amalgam mixing influences of the English rock to elements TECHNO, however I miss any element of the Brazilian musical culture, to not to be the language, and certain reference to the Brazilian rock , and the antropophagic proposal ??

Wilton - That happens above for the exposed. I don't see as doing rock with clear foreign musical influences as it is our case without sounding badly. Musically speaking, it is clear. Rock is foreign music . But we have the Brazilian rock, as well as the Argentinean or French rock it exists, that are everybody different way. I am not in order to use viola, shavings, berimbau, pandeiro or what wants that is that try to put in the rock for doing it to sound " Brazilian ". That for me is clear. I like Stooges a lot for forcing that musical encounter. Our music is basic. The processing, the use of the references, that is Brazilian. I don't imagine that " Spacepop ", for example, it could be created at another country.

It would like that you emitted synthetic and sincere opinion on the following bands:

- SEX PISTOLS - basic Reference of the punk, with certainty. I find a little too gloomy and I prefer the disks of Stooges, that are the center of the punk in any sphere certainly.
- JOY DIVISION - Heard a lot when I was adolescent. I still find very good, but no longer I hear a lot. It is very melancholic. For being sincere, I prefer the New Order.
- JESUS AND MARY CHAIN - A personality band with one of the great disks of the rock in the curriculum (Psychocandy ", is clear). I am fan, but I recognize that its last disks are weak. I will miss them.
- PIXIES - Some consider it to perfect alternative rock. " Surfer Rosa " was great. A great shock. I prefer that to the other ones. Influenced a lot of people.
- OASIS - they totally got lost. But their first disk is big. I like that proletarian arrogance a lot. Great guitars. The second is also very good.
- SEPULTURA - I Like enough of the " Chãos AD ". it would not tolerate more to hear the rest of their work almost completely. Without Max, however, they were lost.
- J.QUEST - THE band that more I dislike now. Those vocal ones pseudo-soul they are of killing. Total frame, a garbage! Nor more a word.
- RATOS DE PORÃO - João Gordo is truly a clown. I don't have sack for that, in spite of liking of a disk of them which I don't remember of the name.
- LOW DREAM - Good new for the indie kids: Giulliano threatens to return still on that year. They are competent, but, I eat they already said before, I prefer the originals. They are too derivative. They are brasilians that imagine in London.
MUTANTS - The parents of the joker gender in the rock. Some things are brilliant, another are unbearable. The phase Yes, then...
- NOVOS BAIANOS - Sincerely, I never heard. I cannot comment.
- METALLICA - I Continue insisting that the black disk is good. The fans prefer those annoying " Master of puppets " and " ...And justice it goes all ". I Hate those batteries and guitars.
- YES - I don't know anything, I imagine.
- NIRVANA - it will be as one of the basic references of the 90, in spite of Claudio to insist in reviling the band. I like very much. I heard too much at that time. Kobain is a rare great person of the decade.
- CHICO BUARQUE - can I say that is the best writer of MPB? I know not very, but I like. "Construction " is a great disk. Claudio adores Chico.
- CAETANO VELOSO - I am a great fan of him, it can believe. I have several disks. Caetano was very more rocker than 90% of the rockers in Brazil. Today he is old, he stiller makes respectable disks. It is a face that insists on to rejuvenate and to create. His problem today is his great ego.
- LEGIÃO URBANA - THE great rock band in Brazil. Renato Russo was a strong personality in the middle of many hollow heads. The attitude mattered by means of a romantic vision of the English rock was essential for them.
- BAUHAUS - I Already heard a lot of thing. I don't tolerate more things of that type. Too Gothic. I don't occur well with alienating romantic attitudes and Bauhaus is well that its for the fans.

To purpose, you speak in an about the spaces of its music and in its manifesto the sentence: WHO will ELECTRIFY CHICO BUARQUE? ...IN the end of last year the band IMAGO MORTIS threw a CD in what they transformed in DOOM METAL the music "DEUS LHE PAGUE" of Chico Buarque, did you get to hear that work??

Wilton - I don't know that band and I don't imagine that has been good. But I was curious. I would like to hear. That music is fabulous. The idea of " electrifying Chico Buarque " has to do with the genesis of a Brazilian rock that gets to balance well in the scale the inevitable foreign influences and our culture.



How has the reception of the CD been and which the plans for the future??

Wilton - THE CD has been pleasing a lot. Has been leaving critics in newspapers and magazines of several places: I Laugh, São Paulo, Goiânia, Bahia. We are still disclosing, in spite of we have already developed a lot. The disk no longer it is more our face. In the moment we are recording some we gave that will serve as pré-production for next disk, that we drifted for September or October.

How does the composition process work in DIVINE?

Wilton - I Generally make the bases at home and we developed jointly in the studio. Be very fast, although we have already delayed almost one year developing a music. The letters come last, with the music practically ready. We rarely changed some thing in that apprenticeship. Claudio has easiness of inserting his letters. After that we increased a detail or other.
