SCARS SOULS
KREPUSKULUM interviewed ANDRÉA PALMIERI, vocalist of the great revelation of PROG Brazilian metal SCARS SOULS, they release the album recently TROIA and they are already composing material for the next work. The band stands out for the personal work of its music that sounds original and only, uniting the instrumentalists' extreme technique: Rogério Segall (G), Ricardo Segall (B) and Adilson Júnior(D), to the feeling and beauty of the vocal of ANDRÉA.
Which the largest difficulties than the band faced to throw two independent
Cd? How has the reception been to your work and contacts with possible labels?
ANDRÉA:
The largest difficulty found for the release of our first CD " SCARS SOULS "
went at that time to lack of experience. We had to learn everything alone after having
taken a R$2.000,00! Our first CD was for having been thrown in beginning of 1995, but for
cause of that problem, its release was just made in September of 1996. By virtue of that,
the material was all together. The music that we had in the beginning of the band with the
ones that had especially done for the CD.
With " TROIA " the things were much easier. We already knew what to do and we
took very care. We care the production so that it went a beautiful independent CD and well
engraving. We know that a lot of thing could be better case we had more time of studio.
However, the money that had joined it went the right bill to the CD to leave of the way
that was. We adored the result.
The reception of the CD cannot if better. I want to say, we are super satisfied with the
acceptance and the attention that we are having. It is a very gratifying thing to count
with the people's support, magazines, radios and of zines (as well as KREPUSKULUM), to
help us to disclose our work. We treated everything with a lot of affection and that
recognition fills us with pride. That does with that want more and more to please the
personnel that supports us and to ourselves!
Until the moment we don't still have a label to aid us in the distribution of " TROIA
" or even that helps us in our next CD that is already being composed. Our next
release is foreseen to be totally conceptual. Because of that we wanted to support a good
producer and more hours of recording. Even so without the financial help of a stamp or
small recording that will become a little more difficult. But not impossible.
Does SCARS SOULS join in its music influences of bands as BLACK SABBATH, RUSH,
IRON MAIDEN and would bands of progressive rock like YES and KING CRIMSON, like you define
your music ?? What do you think abaut musical styles??
We defined SCARS SOULS'S sound as Progressive Metal, or Prog Metal for being easier. But
actually we don't have to do anything with Dream Theater or Shadow Gallery (although we
like those bands). we Liked, it is clear of several bands that are joined in those style.
Our proposal, however, it is of doing a different sound. What is heard in SCARS SOULS it
is not an attempt of sounding of way or of other, but yes what leaves the inspiration and
junction of our influences. Labels are a way to make uniform the content of each band and,
if each band possesses different people and that think different (although they hear the
same thing), it is very annoying to finish saying that one makes that or that. It would be
the same as to make uniform the mind and the " feeling " of each one. Only that
what to do when they ask: " What style is your band "? or then: Is " your
band type the one what? Which band that seems "? (laughters).
Is its vocal emblem very personal , which its largest vocal influences, do you
practice song exercises ??
For incredible that it seems, most of my vocal influences is masculine. But there are
several women that are true divas for me. I am a lot of fan of Jon Anderson of Yes, of
Killing Joke Jaz Coleman, of Peter Gabriel in the phase Genesis, of Greg Lake of Emerson,
Lake and Palmer, of Corey Glover that was of Living Colour and several others of the most
varied bands. With relationship to the women, it is still more mixed the taste: Barbara
Streisand, Cláudia (Brazilian), Sonja Kristina of Curved Air, Annie Haslam of Renaissance
and another.
I make exercises yes for voice, but at home. Breathing, diaphragm, sentences, vocalises.
But I admit that not with the frequency that would owe. (laughters) Until today, I could
only make a " Shop of Voice " that just lasted 6 months. And as it is learned
important things in 6 months. I never stop following the advices that the Glória
Calvente, at that time my teacher, taught me. She has a really very pretty and soft voice.
My advice for any person that sings, man or woman, are that makes exercises. The
difference that one sits down is something that until it can scare in the first week. You
change the way to face its limits completely.
A very interesting aspect of the CD is that all the letters in the cover come
with a small introduction where you, in a certain way, unmask the source of inspiration of
the letter or it invites us to travel in her history. How did this idea appear? Why did
you decide not to sing those intros??
It was almost a thing that instinctive to tell the truth. When I wrote the letters of
" TROIA " I noticed that still lacked some thing in each letter that could
transmit an image or a sensation. Each music for me meant a vision, an image and, to leave
the letters say that for itself own it could work but it could be a colder thing, of the
type " they be come to imagine ". I felt lack of something. It was when I
decided to show what was thinking when I wrote each one of the letters. Type, which the
situation visualization that each one had. It is a great form of doing with that the
people understand exactly what one means it is speaking to them. The reader sits down that
somebody is speaking directly to him. It turns every closer history of each one and not a
thing writing just in narrative. It was, really, as an invitation to the free imagination
where each one imagines a different voice in the hour that reads. That, they could not be
sung.
In the letters of beautiful MY GUIDING LIGHT, JURUSALEM and DREAMING, you talk
a lot about the world of the dreams and of as it is important to dream for you, to the
that everything indicates most of the letters that you write it comes in dreams. How is
that creative process, could you talk more about him for us?
The dreams really influence a lot my letters. A lot of times I have to move and to move in
a letter until that she is faithful to it that I felt or I saw. But nor everybody is like
this composed. Childbirth of a central idea and of there I give free rein to fancy. I am
so much with that in the head that I almost always end up dreaming.
But there is always an or another that you/they mean exactly what dreamed. But to say
which, it would be as unmasking a magic, it would be not fun anymore! (laughters)
Of who it did leave the idea of doing the music TROIA that has more than 20
minutes? Is the letter, in what you were inspired to write it?
Everybody in the band always wanted to do a big music. But Rogério (guitarist) it was who
idealized and it transformed everything in reality, let us say like this (laughters). All
the harmonies and passages were fruit of his central idea, later each one of us create
with its arrangement. The idea of calling a friend to play keyboards, and another for the
violin was because we wanted her to have a progressive garments more present than latent.
We liked the result a lot.
The letters of TROIA, as of all Second it leaves of the CD, they were inspired in the
reading of the first volume of TROIA Horse Operation of JJ Benítez. But, as always
frieze, they don't speak directly than there is writing in the book. Well, I think only
DREAMING can be something of him, but the rest was just thought while I was reading.
The music THE UNKNOWN FILES has to do some thing with the seriate X-Files, do
you like scientific fiction and fantasy, could they aim us some of the films and books
that read on the subject??
But of course she has to do with the seriate! (laughters). She is the typical example that
is not alone of dreams that is written a letter! (laughters). Well, to explain better I
can say that she is based on a certain episode in that are made several discoveries and
crop of tests and, in the end, they end up being burned in a planned fire. But... which
will he be?? Who is same fan he/she knows! Only that the letter doesn't tell everything
that has in the episode. Of course not. Nor the history is the same!
Talking about the films, the taste is varied too much, but with certainty the films of
" b " " z " is the favorite of my videotec. I am not a lot of films
that leave the people " for bass ", he/she knows. But with certainty, when I
watch a film I enter immediately in him. That, never invite me to see a sad film!!!
(laughters). Documentaries, ovnis lectures , exhibitions, even meetings of X FILES maniacs
on ovni's went influences to this CD. I never follow precisely a route, there are always
surprises.
To read there was of everything. Of books popular type Sidney Sheldon (when I want "
to attend " the seriate ones), passing for apocryphal, fiction type Benítez and
other, pictures (I adore Spawn), computer science and internet (I adore technological
subjects) even pocket books of Stephen King!!! it is Worth that to arrest me the
attention. Now I am not reading any book because I am until the head with obligations, but
when I catch a book he ends in two days depending on the size, clear! (laughters).
How does the composition process work inside of the band, the letters or the
music it comes first??
First the music and later the letters. It is terrible, at least for me, to
" thread " a letter in a music until doing with that she fits. It would end up
changing everything in the end! It is very forced. I always place after to hear and to
feel the one that she passes for me. Each one orders you to do a certain thing. Do imagine
a calm music of the type MY GUIDING LIGHT with the letter type of SCHIZOPHRENIA?, aaarg.
It will be sweet! To pass all that suffering thing already with the music being more calm
will seem sweet clip. (laughters).
Let us see a very easy example for who doesn't know the CD nor SCARS SOULS'S letters:
imagine the letter well of " JUSTIFY MY LOVE " of Madona (that everybody should
know on what he/she speaks) threaded in another music of her, even of the type " PAPA
DON'T PREACH "!!!! Her all of black in the video clip, of stocking and whip "
Tiazinha " shut up at the room because the dad discovered that her pregnant! (many
laughters).
Do talk us a little about the graphic aspects of the CD, who did have the idea
for the layer and cover and the one what those images represent for you?
When he/she went talk it remains to layer, I said that wanted sky, a lot of cloud and it
sands. I already had more or less a thing defined in the head, but he/she never got to say
right that was. Of there we joined everybody several times and the ideas of each one they
were different! It was a disaster to try to reconcile the tastes! (laughters). Of there
went talk with Bernard (that went bear of to band of progressive, Tempus Fugit), that
he/she made our layer, each one said a thing! He suggested some and we were of seeing the
result later. When he came, we looked at and we showed for several people to see the
result in their face. We reached the conclusion that would need more changes. Then I beat
the foot and he/she said: I want sand, I want sky and I want very fat clouds! (laughters).
Of there he appeared with our definitive layer. I thought she was very pretty same, in
that point I am " even mother-owl ". Already the inner cover, had great doubts
and we left due to him. He made the whole art based on the letters of the CD. There is a
construction with coloration orange type jerusalem in the afternoon, there is an angel,
stairways, lock, finally the whole rest was art and creation of Bernard. He without doubts
is a very competent artist and that works with a lot of whim.
Has SCARS SOULS been doing many shows to disclose the CD?? Which the plans for
the future??
Since the beginning of the year we already made several shows for TROIA, we hoped to give
still more!! we Adored to play and to show our work for personal. It has been very
gratifying the reception of the galley. A place that we didn't still play was Minas
Gerais. We would like a lot to go because we have many, but a lot of letters even of the
area!
For the future, we will still disclose more the band for the interior of Brazil and for
the exterior, to play where the wind to take and, for a future one closer, to finish
composing and to record the next CD. The theme is already defined, we hoped when they
hear, everybody likes and accept as well as they are accepting TROIA!
