SUFFOCATE INTERVIEW

SUFFOCATE is a grindcore death act coming from SLOVAKIA, a new cradle of agressivity!!! In the line of grincore kings like Napalm Death but with a personal sense of melody the band scared us with your new album, the grindmelodic LUSTFORHEAVEN released by EREBOS. Krepuskulum interviewed ZORAN (G) & GERALD (V), by e-mail.

Krepuskulum: Talk to us about the band tragectory and about the SLOVAKIAN extreme scene.

Suffocate: The band was founded in the year 92´. After some personal changes the line up was comleted in the summer 93´: Gerald- vocal, Attila- guitar, Zsolt- guitar, Csomo- bass, Janko- drums.We recorded two demotapes in this line up: "Exhumed Suckling Consuming" and "Unborn Suffer" .After the second demorecording left us Csomo and Janko.The new line up was completed in spring 97´with Fogel- bass, Eric- drums and with this line up we recorded two stuffs "Exit 64"- MC, CD and "Lust for haeven"- MC, CD. After the new CD recording left us Zsolt- guit.Now we play in fours.

I think the extreme scene is on a high level in Slovakia. There´s a lot of cool extreme bands like Embolism, Sanatorium, Abortion, Typhoid, Dementor, Ravenarium and many more bands.....The Slovakian underground is full of life , there´s a lot of great festivals and gigs. The most popular metal style is the death- grind and death or black metal.

What is the meaning of the cd title LUSTFORHEAVEN?? Do you believe in God or in Heaven?

The title of the CD is agree with one song on it , this song is about the 11 years old boy, who hated his life and hanged up himself, ´cause he heard in the church, that in the heaven is well /it´s a true story/. We don´t believe in god or heaven. We think there must be some great power or what who is about us, but not christian´s god! We are anticrelical! It´s only a great brain wash together !!!

The lyrics in the album are very interesting. Who write them? Talk about SUBLIMINALY INFLUENCE & MINDNET lyrics.

I write the lyrics (Gerald).The "Subliminaly Influence" is about the brainwash and manipulation of the massmedia, ´cause most people are wery poor here in east Europa. They´re working everyday for the subsistence . The only happines is the tv for them. The media know it well and impove this situation. The "Mindnet" is about the new digital world. The more and more young people choose this way of amusement. Everyday are sitting before the pc and they lose the contact with the real world.

The guitar rifs of the CD give a melodic touch in the SUFFOCATE music? Where come from the inspiration and influences to create this rifs?

We listen a lot of music styls from hard core to industial everything. This multicolored styles have a great impact on us, for this reason there is a great place from where we can draw ideas.

Talk to us about the production and the creative process of the new CD?

With some songs we was ready in the end of last year, when the songs we finished in march 2000 . Right before the begining of the recording. We was one and half months in studio, we never been in studio that long time before. I think it was worth the trouble we are satisfied whit this.

Talk to us about SUFFOCATE gigs and theunderground reception of LUSTFORHEAVEN.

After the CD recording we played on a lot of summer festivals and now in autum is starting here the club life, and i hope that we will play a lot of gigs. Earlier we played in Czech republic, Hungary and Austria. I heard that our label preparing a west europian tour for us next year. I hope it´s become true! I think the reception is well the solding is around 1000 CD´s.

The cover of the album is very strange. Is it some meaning??

Yes, of course. The cover is closely connected with the song "Lust for heaven". Child´s eyes lookin at the sky!
