TUATHA DE DANANN  INTERVIEW

Medieval Celtic Metal coming from Brazil!??! Yeah! This band make a inpirated metal music with celtic influences and it is one of the most great sucess in underground brazilian scene. Krepuskulum called with Bruno Semler (V, G) the band Leader.

Krepuskulum: What is the meaning of the name TUATHA DE DANANN?

Bruno: Tuatha De Danann were the people of Danú. A enchanted race that inhabited magic Ireland . Lords of the life, death and of dreams.Imortals warrioriors detainers of magic power. With the coming of the christianism turned into the fairies and gnomes of the popular folklore. Agreement with the legend, they coming from the skies and brought the sun. Made great battles magics in mythical Ireland.

TDD already is are cognized band of melodic metal in the Brazilian underground. Why did you opt for the Melodic Heavy Metal ?

I don't consider Tuatha a band of melodic heavy metal. Sincerely. I know that have influences of bands as Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, etc. But we also have a lot of influences doom as My dying bride, Anathema, Orphaned Land, Katatonya and Paradise lost (old) and death metal also. I find impossible to classify our sound .Find a label. We are musically very eclectic. And as Oscar Wilde said: "To label is to limit! We doesn't want any barrier that impedes our musical soul of growing...

In the first demo of TDD the band presented some influences of doom metal. Do you admire that style?

Of course !!! We are a lot of fans of Doom metal. In the beginning, on time of the demo " The last Pendragon ", was more doom / gothic the sound of the band .Att that time heard a lot of My Dying Bride ,Katatonya, Sadness, Anathema, Solitude aeturnus, Cathedral ...and we were teens. We were fond for doom metal. But even so the sound had a foot in Heavy. The sound moved naturally. We didn't plan nothing. We was including many elements of the Celtic and medieval music, we are there today...

The band includes strong influences of medieval music in your songs. Where does that influence come from, did you study medieval erudit music?

Yes. We are fascinated by the Celtic and medieval music. All we already went by music schols, etc, ... but the only that formed even it is our keyboardist Edgard, he is formed in classic piano and history of the music.I love everything related to the Celtic culture from small and the music grew inside of me, and the band love to. With relationship to our inspiration, it coming from fire, valeys,moon, twilight, of the fairies and magic things around us.

Talk to us about the lyrics of the first CD. Where does come from the inspiration to write them ? What are your favorite books and movies?

That cd actually is not our debut album. He is a single, because it has only has only 4 new musics and the other ones 4 they are of our demo tape " Faeryage ". Our lyrics narrate Celtic legends lost in the past, the saga of the druids massacred by the Christianity, the bards' charm, a trip to one era where the Real melted to the imaginary creating a symbiosis of ideal realities. An ideal of warring people dominated by magic. The intention it is to do with that the people believe in the magic world. That they leave the skepticism sideways and take communion the magic of nature. That they stop seeing the human race as being king of the universe. We are just a grain of sand to the free in him cosmos! We are not alone!! they Look at for the magic that s surrounds! The magic is to their sides! Do dance with the faires, love the nature ...About books? Most of the books where you meet Celtic legends, the most beautiful, they are mattered there is not national! There is many books in portuguese about the celtic civilization. But any good one specific in mythology. Most of those stories and ballads are anonymous, and they only find them in imported books, correspondences and Internet (very good healthy Irish sites). Particularly, my favorite books are: Zaratustra (Nietzsche), A season in the Hell (Rimbaud), The Marriage of the Heaven and Hell (William Blake), The Picture of Dorian gray (Oscar Wilde), everything of the Tolkien and The suffering of Werther (Goethe).

Wath are the musical influences of band members?

Our influences are very varied! They are going from Rainbow/Uriah heep and Jethro Tull to Carcass, Hypocrisy, Cradle of Filth, Anathema and music celtic, medieval, indian (shaman) .But the main influences, I believe that are Rainbow, Amorphis, Skyclad, Carcass, Kai Hansen, Blackmore, My Dying Bride,Paradise lost (old), Helloween, Jethro Tull and Cathedral.

The flutes are incorporated to the music of TDD, creating a marvelous atmosphere. How is the composition process including that instrument?

Normal. Intuitive ! I Play flute already makes a time, and when I compose the melodies they flow naturally. The times we compose a melody and later I incorporate the flute, but most of the times, the flute drives to the melody. Now in the new music, that are replete of flutes, I am using several different types: a Whistle( celtic typical flute), the sweet that I use, 3 traverse of bamboo, for giving a sound well of the brushwood, of the forests... very crazy!

In spite of to strong melodic tendency of your music, you still include brutal vocals brutal (death metal)in some songs. Why?

Yes. They will always exist guttural vocals in Tuatha De Danann. First why grew hearing Death metal, and then, the vocal ones guttural and torn they are great resources.You have know use it ! On new musics there are several guttural vocals.

How went work as label HEAVY METAL ROCK?

When we threw the First dt " The last Pendragon ", Wilton had already like the sound and he already distributed the demo, and when we released " Faeryage ", he sold many copies, a lot of. He gave a touch for us to record with Heavy Metal Rock and us we accepted. He gives a great force for us, he discloses the cd well, he got distribution in Argentina, England, USA and other countries of Europe.

What do you think of the Brazilian metallic scene?

Brazil is a very rich country in bands, zines and serious people disposed to strengthen the scene. The problem is more the public. Do they have to attend in the shows, give a force, did to value the bands, to buy cd's, zines. I am not criticizing the guys . It always goes a great people, but it could stiller strengthen. We have many great bands, are so much that it is impossible to mention, but only lack a larger value in them.

What did talk the fans and critics about the first CD?When do they intend to release the next album?

All the comments and critics were excellent! I didn't still see negative reviews. For the next cd, that actually will be the debut of Tuatha De Danann, the fans and everybody can wait a great magic, crazy and heavy saga, with a lot of flutes, violins, bandolins. Total medieval magic metal!!!!
