Flowers of the heart
By Suzette Drake
Once upon a time…There was once a young Princess, who lived, in a now forgotten Kingdom. She was adored by many but few could manage to catch her eye or her interests. Her name was Lily, and she was indeed the flower of this enchanted Kingdom of the past. Though Lily adored few she still longed for love. She longed for love as any young woman of courting age does.
One day a Wind Dragon came to visit her Kingdom. When they met she fell into a mad passion for him. A Dragon she’d thought, how wonderful. She was blinded by this new passion, and saw only that he was a Dragon of the Wind, but chose not to see that he was also a Dark Dragon. Lily too, caught the interest of the Dragon. The Dragon then began to court Princess Lily. Though a courtship did not mean that either party was bound, Lily felt she should be committed to her magical suitor.
Not long after their courtship began a love interest from Lily’s past returned to the Kingdom. He was a knowing Tiger. Lily had secretly loved the Tiger in her youth but had never told him. He left the Kingdom years ago, to lead an army against foreign enemies. He was the strongest of all the soldiers, and also the most knowledgeable strategist. It is for those reasons that he had gone to lead the armies. The Tiger now however, had realized that he too loved Lily, and for this reason had returned from his campaigns. He has returned to the Kingdom only to court the Princess, as he felt that he should have done years ago.
The Tiger came to the Princess and expressed his affection. She responded with a heavy heart, “My Dearest Tiger,” She felt torn in that moment of choice and of decision. “I am flattered and honored by your offer and by your affections.” She was torn between and old affection and a new passion. “I cannot however court you honestly. Although I do wan to-“ her words were choked somewhere at the back of her throat. Her whole self was confused between her mind and her heart, and she could feel the tears of confusion and inner conflict welling up inside her, in that one choked moment.
Her mind decided to hold fast and stand. She spoke, her words trembling “I must maintain my present commitments. I am courting the Wind Dragon. To also court you would call questions to my virtue. As I am who I am, and in the position of what I am-“ A pause was taken in her forced words, “I am with the Dragon and cannot be with you.”
The Tiger’s strong heart was broken by Lily’s words. He was beaten down, and fled from Lily’s presence. He needed to lick his wounds without eyes to glance him. After the Tiger had fled from her sight Lily began to question how she truly felt about the Dragon. She was resolved however, to stay fast to her resolved. The next day Lily called on the Dragon. He did not meet her at her summoning. Princess Lily did not let herself worry. It was not too unlike the Dragon to have other commitments to attend to. Days began to pass however. Lily had yet not heard back from the Dragon.
The Dragon was a creature of the Wind. Lily had perhaps not let herself remember this during the courtship. He was also a dark dragon, who had long been corrupted by power. Though he was a creature of magic whom insight passion, his nature made him impossible to hold. The Dragon had left without any word, crushing Lily’s petal-like heart. She was alone again- and hurting like none other time she could never compare to in her life to this point. She was hurting mostly because she did not follow her heart.
The Dark Wind Dragon had left the Kingdom because of his nature. Lily did not want to wilt away because of her pain and her lack of confidence in her heart. The Tiger had left. She feared he’d gone on some suicide war campaign. She dispatched all her servants to find him, and bring message to him, that she loved him, and to please, would he please return. It was difficult to find him, and even still more difficult to bring him to her words. The Princess had turned away his honest affection with a harshness of a resolved mind. He was doubtful that he could trust these words now that were said to come from her heart.
He returned to her Kingdom, and met with her. Lily blossomed in that moment, when following her heart brought her such true joy. The Tiger, being the knowing Tiger that he was saw this in her, and knew that her words now were true. The two courted and soon after were married. On the day of their wedding Tiger lilies sprung up around the countryside. Though the Kingdom has gone and been forgotten, the Tiger lilies remain, reminding all to follow their hearts. When the mind quiets, and the heart listens, new joy and vitality will spring up, and renew itself always, just as the Tiger lilies renew themselves each summer.
