Process

Process explains to the audience the information needed to help them understand what that which is needed to complete a task. Process has a long history of being used in writing. The language was simple and precise to make the task as easy as possible. Process also follows a chronological sequence, again to ensure that the task is properly performed. Process allows the audience to know how to reach point C from point A, ensuring that point B is not missed in between these two points. The task is broken down into parts to ensure that the audience understands what needs to be done to achieve a certain goal, put forth by the author. Process follows a chain of events, ensuring that each link in the chain is not overlooked.

It is important to clearly tell the reader the knowledge needed to complete a task. In essence process is a guide of “how to”. An audience reads -process- to learn how things work, and to better themselves, among the many other reasons that spring from these. Process should be clear and comprehensible. Language should be taken into consideration to ensure clarity. An author should consider who his audience would be to use the correct language that will be understood by that audience. Proper chronology is most important when writing a clear, comprehendible process writing piece. The writing should also be interesting to keep the attention of the reader. If attention is lost then the reader will learn nothing from the work.

The author of process becomes something of a teacher to the readers. An author must be as informed as possible about the subject that he is writing about. The author must be able to show the complexity of an operation to someone else through written words. Description is useful clarify process. The audience should be convinced that the author is an expert at performing the task described. Readers should never be convinced that the author is not a trustworthy authority on the process described. All information given in the process article written should be as up-to date as possible and should also be grounded in relevant information. It is also important that the author be interested in the topic written about, due to the amount of research that should be done. If the author has little interest in the subject it is doubtful he will be able to convince the audience to be interested as well. Two questions should be considered by a writer when the desire to write a process piece:

1”What process can I perform well enough to explain to people who might want to try it themselves or how just might want to know how the process is carried out?”
2”What process interest me enough to make me want to research it adequately and to present it clearly in an explanation readers can follow easily?”

These questions will help guide a writer to a successful process piece.
