On fish dinners and xerox machines Mar 20 98 So, yesterday. It was seven pm, I was about to go to the club to do weightlifting, when suddenly Davi arrives at my house in his car from out of nowhere. He said that he, Lilian, Dani and Chica were going to watch a play, and that I HAD to go. After hesitating a little, I went back home, changed and went with them. Lilian and Dani are two friends I knew in São Paulo a couple years ago. They were approved at my college this year, so they moved here to Campinas, and are living together in a building close to Davi's. Dani is studying Economics, and Lilian is studying Theather. In the car with Davi were Dani and Chica. We passed by Lilian and Dani's house to pick Lilian up, and then went to the theater. The play was about Bertold Brecht's history, part of a Bertold Brecht festival that's happening here in Campinas to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth. The actors were actually just reciting (?) some of his non-political poetry, trying to show a side of hsi work that's usually not known by the general public. I have to admit I didn't know very much about Brecht before yesterday night, but that's exactly what events like that are for. It was free, so a lot of people learned about Brecht. They could put a little more movement on their performances, though. It was too static for my personal taste. After the play, Lilian and Dani said they had fish at their house waiting to be made, and that if they didn't prepare it on that night it would rot. So I decided to go eat fish with them. Davi wanted to go to his house to sleep, and Chica had to go home, what left the three of us alone there. Davi and I decided that I'd go to sleep at his house later, since he lives just two blocks away from Dani and Lilian's house. So we started preparing the fish at 11 pm. Lilian and I started spicing the fish, while Dani was washing the dishes. A few moments later, the telephone rang. It was one of Dani's friends, so she started chatting with him on the phone while Lilian and I made the food. The funniest part was when she told the guy that we were preparing fish for dinner, and it would taste really good because she's an excellent cook. And she wasn't helping with anything! Cooking by telepathy, that's what it is. It all got ready by 12:30 pm. Besides the fish we had brocoli, rice, passion fruit mousse and caju juice (I don't know if caju has an English translation, but I swear I'll find out). The fish was simply divine. I had never eaten such a good fish dish. The best part is the satisfaction of knowing I did it. We talked a lot, listening to Gilberto Gil. It was great. When we finished it was around 1:30 am, so I went to Davi's house. When I arrived there he had just arrived, so we talked a little and then went to sleep. We went together to college today. I watched a Calculus class, borrowed the teacher's book so I could copy it. Then I met Camila, and we prepared next week's Physics Lab class. Met Base, we RPGed a little, and then I went to work. Used my job's xerox machine to copy the book (why pay for it when you can do it for free?). The librarian left me alone in the copy room with the xerox machine, so I had to resist not to make a xerox copy of my butt. NO, I DIDN'T do it. But I did make a copy of my hand and of my face, I'll scan it and put it here on my homepage soon. Which reminds me of how my friends can turn a perfectly innocent conversation into a totally depraved one. It's AMAZING. For instance, one day I was at Davi's room, with Kika, Thais and Davi. So we started talking about the calendar Davi has with some of Klimt's pictures. Davi said that a few of them reminded him of Dave McKean's work, and we talked a little about it. I remarked that one of McKean's techniques was making color copy machines do things they weren't designed to do, whatever that meant. So they started wondering what did he do with the copy machines. Thais said that he probably lay down on the machine and takes copies of himself. I told her that once at my school at Klamath Falls a guy took copies of his butt and went around giving them to people. So they jumped on me making jokes! They asked if I had kept a copy for myself, that they would look for it in my things. Then they said that I should take a copy of mine and put it on my website. Better yet, I should scan it! They only stopped when Kika ask how would I do it if, instead of using a flatbed scanner to sit on, I used a hand scanner... They just don't know when to stop, sometimes. |
