“Tamia”
Tamia had been living in L.A. for just three weeks when she
went to a major Hollywood party and had a chance to join R&B
biggies Luther Vandross and Natalie Cole at the piano for a
spontaneous sing-along. Legendary producer Quincy Jones, who
happened to be there, signed Tamia and asked her to record the
smoky ballad “You Put A Move On My Heart” for his 1995 album,
Q’s Jook Joint. The song became a hit. Since then, the 21-year-
old Canadian has performed on Oprah and recorded another hit
ballad with Brandy, Chaka Khan and Gladys Knight for last
summer’s Set It Off soundtrack--and she’s currently a model for
the new Tommy Hilfiger ad campaign. In March, Tamia will release
her debut solo album that she’s now loading with plenty of “up-
tempo jams” in addition to ballads because, she says,”I want
people to know that I’m young.”
