I called Roland and talked to them. Any drive up to 80 MB will work if it

has the older Sony mechanism in it. This includes CMS, MicroNet, Microtech,
etc....but only up to 80 MB.

The manual lists three specific models from Apple and CMS.

The only Cd-ROM drive that they knew about was their own. The guy had tried
many different drives and nothing ever worked. I happen to know that this
Tone Genics outfit made an upgrade for the HD5-IF which included both a
hardware upgrade as well as software which gave you support for Syquest 44 MB
cartridges and other 3rd party CD-ROM drives. It also made some improvements
to the OS so that loading would be faster from a CD-ROM than from the normal
Roland drive.

The guy (Jim Norman) ALSO said that for some strange reason he found that
the Syquest-105 removeable drives DID work...but only formatted the discs up
to 80 MB. But at least they worked. That sounds like the best option for
HD, Get a Syquest-105 and a pile of cartidges and that would last until I
can afford a better sampler anyway.

Plus, I still am going to look for a CD-5 CD-ROM drive.

Thanks again for your help. You can put this on the FTP site if you wish.

Ah, what did this upgrade entail?

I have the manual, but it is packed up right now. I can't get to it
for about a week, unless I come across it before then. I'll probably
send it to the whole list, but it would probably be a good idea to
stick this on the ftp site (if the info isn't already there).

But basically, the drives had to be 20meg, 40 meg, or 80 meg, and
according to the manual, particular models. Mine happens to be one,
and it is loud and warm (probably due to the older tech), but has
worked flawlessly. If anybody has been able to get other
manufacturers' drives to work, please tell us, as I'd hate to think
that we are somewhat dependent on discontinued drives.

If you don't hear from me in a week, please get back to me in email as
I'll probably forget.

When I was packing up tonight for my move, I came across the manual
for the SCSI interface for the S-550. This info is taken from pg. 3,
and acording to the recent posts, is not exactly true. According to
someone who spoke with Roland, as long as the older drives have "the
old Sony mechanism" they should work. I don't know exactly what that
means. ;) Roland also said it works with some syquest removables,
notably the 44Mb and 105mb removables, but the 105 will only act as an
80Mb drive... I have no idea about the 44 meg. I'd assume it would
think it was a 40 meg, but I don't know.

Anyways, here's the info:

---------------------------------------------
(SCSI Specifications for the Apple Macintosh)

Apple M-2620 (20Mb)
M-2644 (40Mb)
M-2688 (80Mb)

CMS SD-20 (20Mb)
SD-80 (80Mb)

20Mb = 16 floppies
40Mb = 32 floppies
80Mb = 64 floppies

----------------------------------------------

Enjoy!

yes, i use a w-30 with a syquest removable drive. i got it from relax
technologies in california. we had to purchase the scsi card for the back
($120-150) and then we could use the syquest.

with the syquest, you can save up to 40mb on a 44mb cartridge. roland only lets
you format in increments of 20mb, so that is what we got out of it.

the loading time between songs is near 20-30 secs for the song and sounds. it
basically cuts it in half.

good stuff.

I too am a big fan of the S550. I've got a video capture card so I display
the
S550 screen on my Mac, very cool!
Good luck with the SCSI interface. I've got one - it's great, I've got a
CD-ROM
and a Syquest Ez135 hooked up to it - great having the extra storage.
Ferret out all the music sites with 'gear exchange' bbs's and you may luck
out.
Definitely check out Stefano Darino's "D-Sound-Pro" if you've got a Mac.
It reads and writes S550 files, converts from/to aiff, wav, etc. and can put

sounds on an S550 disk. The disk must be formatted in the S550.
If the SGroup sample site is up, that's a good source of samples, and with
one of the variety of sample edit programs like D-Sound out there you can
at least do sample dumps over MIDI. No conversion of S-750 to S550 directly,

but I think D-Sound will read S750 disks so you could use it as an
in-between.
Good luck and enjoy the world of 12bit!
