There's something in the sky...

...David on Earthling:
"Iīm really not quite sure why we eventually settled on the title 'Earthling'
. I mean, it was supposed to describe a man in his pure habitat on Earth. And
I suppose, the irony isn't just on me in that it's sort of me in maybe my most
wordly kind of guise and most human guise to date. It's full of puns and
little jokes and it's kind of funny I suppose...I think one honestly feels
that every record is really important. I donīt know. I mean, this came from
such a singular...I hadnīt intended recording right now. But his life in here
was so exciting that we just wanted to do it. I mean, we wrote the album - apart
from the two older songs that we are doing, we wrote the album in something
like nine and a half days. I mean it was done incredibly quickly. But that was
within itself, kind of the point of the exercise, to work really quickly and
write really fast and just see what happened more than anything else. And why
I'm doing it myself - because I think I had a very strong vision of what the
music should sound like. And I really wanted to make it fairly singular. I think
maybe my character, whatever that is possibly, comes through more strongly on
this album than on many other albums I've done. Thatī's not to denigrate some
of the other albums, because some of them were specifially character oriented.
But this one, it really represents how I am at the moment quite strongly. Yes."
Little Wonder "With Little Wonder I thought
Iīd reactive The Laughing Gnome: and the Seven Dwarfs of Snow White.
I wrote elements of it as fast as possible: I ran out of dwarfs so I made a few
up and tried to draw them all together with a fake narrative. There are number
of jokey self-references thrown in for a good measure, īsit on my karma, dame
meditationī"
Looking for Satellites "I used words randomly:
'Shampoo, TV, Boys Own'. Whatever I said first, stayed in. Itīs as near to a
spiritual song as I've ever written: now that the Christian narrative seems
more distant than ever and we are poised with the prospect of imminent
discovery of aliens, we started to pick up the pieces of our spiritual lives
all over again."
