Meeting all the other celebrities, attending cool parties, performing "MMMBop" at historic Radio City Music Hall and definitely being honored by the recording academy were all pretty darn cool!
Nominated for Record Of the Year, Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group, Ike, Tay and Zac were totally thrilled. "It's a humbling experience, because you don't witness [that] that often," said the usually comical Ike seriously. "It's like 'Whoa!' Why is this happening? I don't deserve this."
Arriving in New York just a day prior to the Grammy telecast, Taylor confessed that he couldn't even imagine winning. "People say, 'Do you think you're going to win?' You can't know. We're just going to go there and enjoy the experience." And, that's exactly what they did!
The day of the show, Hanson arrived at Radio City Music Hall early to rehearse their performance of their nominated hit song "MMMBop." There had originally been thoughts about singing "Weird," the group's newest single from Middle of Nowhere, but in the end the guys decided to play the song which had been so graciously honored. "No, I'm not nervous at all," said Zac with a shrug as he carried his drum sticks to the stage.
Later that night, Ike, Tay and Zac smiled from ear to ear walking down the red carpet into the crowd of music stars and executives, including many celebs that the brothers of Hanson had long admired but had never had the chance to meet. In the makeup room backstage, the three brothers joked around with former Saturday Night Live comedian Mike Myers, who complimented Ike for his dead-on impression of Mike's British secret agent character 'Austin Powers.' The guys also had a chance to share a laugh with singer Jewel as she came into the makeup room for a touchup escorted by her 21-year-old brother Atz. Later on, they greeted and congratulated fellow teenage nominee, country singer LeAnn Rimes, who sang her nominated song "How Do I Live" during the show.
Like many in the audience, the brothers gasped when country artist Trisha Yearwood, who also recorded "How Do I Live" for the movie Con Air, won the award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance instead. "Ohmigod," commented Taylor to Ike when the winner was announced. "That's the song LeAnn just sang." Ike noted, "They both sound exactly the same: like a different vocal over the same track."
Although Hanson went home empty handed, too--Record Of The Year was nabbed by Shawn Colvin's "Sunny Came Home," Pop Performance went to Brit stars Jamiroquai for "Virtual Insanity" and Best New Artist honors went to Paula Cole--these brothers from Tulsa had no regrets. Grammy week really was a blast and it really is an honor just to be nominated!
