SARAH McLACHLAN
This pic is from the Possession video
Sarah McLachlan is an incredible artist...she's Canadian too! I always enjoy watching a
Canadian artist become popular, it's way beyond time that she's in the spotlight. Sarah
should have been there years ago. I first heard Sarah on the 1995 Juno awards CD, the song
was Hold On. I went out and bought "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" (the album Hold On came off).
I was really impressed because many artists have one good song and the rest of the album isn't
what you hoped it would be. Like Tori Amos, she is a fantastic lyricist. I bought "Solace" next
because I saw the video for Into The Fire and loved the song.
Since then, I've boughten "Touch", "Freedom Sessions", "Rarities, B-Sides and Other Stuff" and
most recently, I bought "Surfacing". "Freedom Sessions" has mostly all songs from "Fumbling
Towards Ecstasy" redone...or should I say, how the songs started out. The songs are more
accoustic, she even did a cover of Tom Waits' Ol' 55! "Rarities..." is a collection of songs
that were extras on singles, remixes and covers of other songs. "Surfacing" is a fantastic
album, like all the others. The song Building A Mystery is playing on radios across Canada and
most likely the United States too. I'd have to say "Rarities..." is my favorite album, my
favorite song is Possession.
I was quite lucky, one of the music stations aired Sarah live so I got to see and tape her. I also
got to tape several of her videos, Possession being my favorite. She was incredible live, I am really
hoping that Sarah will be coming this way in the fall with her tour. Sarah came here three years ago
and I hear she may be headed this way in the fall. If I get the time off work to go, you can expect a
review of the concert to be posted on this page. When she did her live show, all her movements and facial
expressions were exactly like I expected...almost the way I would have done them. Sarah's an incredible
artist, and I know she will be around for a long time.
Recently I discovered what Sarah wrote the song Possession about. She had a stalker for about two years
and he wrote her letters and stuff. She wrote Possession from his point of view, which was a brave step
on her part. He then began proceedings to sue her because he claimed that he wrote the song through his
letters. Any one who is familiar with the way Sarah writes would know that she wrote it. Before the matter
went to court, he killed himself. To me, this is a sign that he definetly did not write any part of the song.
