PD:  And to kick off Part 3 we've got Brian May, confidently going to all
the nay sayers who thought that the without Freddie Mercury, the rest of
Queen wouldn't bother to even soldier on.  But Brian May releases his second
solo album this week - a mixed bag of covers and originals.  The first
single, The Business, is a tribute to Cozy Powell, who died earlier this
year and was to have toured with the Brian May Band this summer.

Plays:  The Business (extract of promo video)  Cozy shots with drumming,
pics of Expo 92 "Driven", Business sleeve (both sides)

BRIAN:  Cozy was very special.  Um  I guess it's the spirit of the guy
really.  He was very much  a rock and roll creature - he was a loner - he
didn't have a family or anything.  Didn't know where he came from you know a
bit of a kind of castaway in a sense and he just lived for the music.

The Business continues playing

I got to thinking and found some extra drum bits which had been sort of
lurking in other places and put together a special mix, yea, of The Business
track, and it just sort of makes the most of Cozy.  Its very, the track was
very much him anyway, um, I remember its just something he enjoyed, just
ploughing away you know, 'cause I think neither of us were really into
technique for its own sake.  You know, we're into things that sound
magnificent and give you a gut feeling.

Plays: On My Way Up (short live extract)  "I'm mighty bold, on my way up".

PRESENTER:  Dedications aside, the album "Another World" also features
covers of songs by Jimi Hendrix and Mott The Hoople, as well as
collaborations with Foo Fighters' drummer, Taylor Hawkins, and guitar god,
Jeff Beck.

BRIAN:  Jeff was always a hero of mine since I was young, you know.  He was,
he's not that much older than me, sorry Jeff.  I'm always a little in awe of
the guy really because he's just so exceptional, you know, there's real
magic there, and I think everybody thinks so, he's kind of the guvnor.  He's
the guitarist's guitarist.

Plays: The Guvnor (short extract of promo? video)  "They call him the
Guvnor"

I focussed myself on the stuff which was,  I thought, was taking me to a new
place.  You know, its not called "Another World" for nothing, its actually
meant to be, you know I feel like there is something new in there and that
there is a new angle.

Plays: Why Don't We Try Again (short live extract)  "And now I miss you in
so many ways . . . . . . . . . .  many lonely days."

Some people come up and say "God, its really so different from Queen, you
know.  Its something that you never could have done as Queen."  And I go
"No, yeah, you're right", you know, 'cause I'm in a different place now.  I
am that guy, but I'm in a different place.  And then some people go, "Sounds
a lot like Queen doesn't it?" (laughs) and then I go "Um, does it?" and I
guess both is true because Queen is part of my history and its something
that I'm proud of, um, but there is more to life than that and there's a bit
more in this album than that.

Plays: Middle eight WDWTA (live)

You know, there's a whole image of Queen and of us and of me that we must
live in some sort of  ivory tower, or sort of Fairy Castle or something, you
know, and we don't live in a real world, and , um, it's a handicap for me
you know.  Making albums was really tough,  great moments, but, uh, so much
compromise had to be made and that's what's different in my life now you
know.  I miss the guys I mean I wouldn't say I don't you know , and of
course I miss Freddie, as Freddie was so full of ideas and lateral stuff and
you never knew where he was coming from.  I miss it.  I miss the input but
what I get is I can go in the studio and I can do exactly what's in my mind
and if its not right I can fiddle around with it until it is, or I can throw
it away and do it again - I don't have to ask anybody.

Everything on this album is what I wanted it to be, you know.  I take all
the blame, utterly.  You know, every piece of every note of this album I
did, and its there for a reason.
