Something For Kate

Press on Prick (single)
SMH Metro:
For Something For Kate, the jury is still out for me on whether their mix of post-My Bloody Valentine cascades and solid grunge-isn’t-dead construction says something new. The Eli Janney Remix does have a great throbbing pulse of electronica though.

Beat Magazine 1997 Wed 22nd October – Tue 28th October:
If Captain didn’t deliver the JJJ hit they unfortunately need to conquer and not just survive, then the Eli Janny (Girls Against Boys) remix of Prick (itself rather wonderful) should do the job. Keeping the anger of the song and adding a filthy electronic undercurrent, it’s a sympathetic remix that should help them subvert uncharted territories. If only: more than just the kids understood.

hEARd Magazine:
As many regular hEARd readers would be aware, this band are probably my favourite band, having followed them from the development of their debut e.p. & through onto the release of both the amazing Captain (Million Miles An Hour) single & their debut album Elsewhere For Eight Minutes.
This is the second single release from the album & once again it’s classic material that should see plenty of radio support, as well as having some superb additional tracks included.
The title track is an awesome piece of power angst pop, combining the raw vocal style of Paul Dempsey in with the wall of guitar & pounding drumbeats the band can muster.
Prickly is a remix of the title track & marries together that exceptional power with some groovy dance beats on similar lines to the remix of silverchair’s Freak recently.
3x2 slows the pace down, being a little like Paintbrushes from the album, whilst Friendly is a sublime quiet/loud/quiet song that has one of the best lines to end the track in ‘...I dug this hole & I’ll get myself out of it - & if I can’t then I’ll be proud of it...’. Surely worldwide domination is but a matter of time.
Prick is out now through Murmur. hEARd rating 10/10
