There are a few good bands playing around Newcastle at the moment, the only problem being that there are a lack of venues willing to support local music. Some of the best places to see bands cranking out their original stuff are SJ's on Beaumont St., Hamilton and the Hunter on Hunter (on Hunter Street, go figure?) anyway enough of my rambling here's a few names...

Davola
These guys could well be the most original band in Newcastle, if you haven't seen 'em then you realyy should get out more often.
Loose Chant Order
Battling through a personnel shortage at present LCO look set to re-emerge in the near future with a new sound and a new name. Keep an eye out
Chin Chen
The winners of the 1997 Newcastle Uni Band Comp, these guys rock and rock hard, kinda like Regurgitator on red cordial, they've played recently at the Bar on the Hill and at SJ's and have an E.P. out called "Kick, Block, Punch"
Kilakrankie
Whatever you want to hear really, from skiffle to heavy metal, and prog rock to funk, these guys do it all and do it well.
III Squire
Formerly known as Ripple, III Squire (as in 3 Squire), are a 3 piece accoustic band with great vocal harmonies... they play most of their gigs on the central coast or in Sydney but if you ever get a chance to see 'em they come highly recommended. If were lucky enough to be watching Ground Zero (sic) on Saturday the 15th of August 1998, you would have caught these guys... for all those who weren't watching, they were good... Lately i haven't heard anything but who knows?

Others...
Just a few other names to be watching - Strength to Strength and Crawl. Also keep an eye out for Henry's Anger, they have one member from Maitland (former Mischling singer Steve Simmons) so that's enough for us to claim them... now if they'd only play in Newcastle. If anyone hears anything good that i don't have listed just email me: clintman78@XtakethispartoutXstart.com.au
