Taking In The Heights
Far from Beverly Hills are some working-class kids with a dream
When we first heard about Fox-TV's new show The Heights, we thought: exellent concept. A bunch of kids from the poor side of town, in a city like Seattle (but not Seattle), form a rock band. Sounds like an American version of The Commitments (one of our favorite movies). And it stars eight young actor/musicians, including the bodacious Jamie Walters. The next thing we know, we're on a plane to Vancouver, Canada, to interview the cast and hang out with them for a day. Do we move fast or what?

James Walters

By 8:30AM, we're on the lot where The Heights is shot drinking coffee and waiting for the actors to arrive. The one I'm dying to meet is Jamie (his nickname) Walters. Ever since I saw him in Shout, I've had my eye on his, uh, career. Finally I spot the twenty-three-year-old actor. "Hi, I'm Jamie," he says shyly. We sit down at a picnic table and he slips his jacket off, exposing a large tattoo under the sleeve of his T-shirt. "That's an angel and I've also got a thunderbird. And on my back, "he adds with a little grin, "is a cross with the name of my fiancée on it." His fiancée, as you know, is Drew Barrymore. The happy couple, who plan to marry in May, are seperated at the moment because Drew is in Los Angeles shooting her own series, 2000 Malibu Road, while Jamie works on The Heights. On the show, Jamie plays Alex, the sensitive grocery boy/poet/singer. Like most of the cast, Jamie really sings and is also putting together a band with some of the actors on the show. "I've always been into music and bands," says the Boston native. "But I consider myself an actor before a musician."
