Madness - The Videos

The Videos

The Prince
When 'The Prince' was released pop videos were not invented so this caused a problem when trying to put 'The Prince' on to a video compilation of Madness' pop videos. To get round this problem Madness bought the rights to their Top of the pops appearence.

It Must Be Love
'It Must Be Love' was originally written by Libi Saffre and released some time before Madness' cover version. Mike heard the song on the radio and tried like crazy to learn the song. Madness preformed the song on tour with no intension of recording it but due to demand it was released after the tour.

The video for 'It Must Be Love' had Madness singing into a grave, standing in a white room with black clothes on and playing their instuments in a swiming pool.

My Girl
For the video of 'My Girl' video Madness wanted to film themselves playing at the pub that they did their some of their first gigs at. Unfortunatly the pubs stage was to small for all seven of them to stand on with their instruments, so Madness got the Stiff carpenter to build an extension on to the stage. The stage extension was left on for many years to come and was only knocked down when the pub was refurbished at great expence.

Baggy Trousers
The video for 'Baggy Trousers' was filmed mostly in the Islip Street School. The pub used for the teachers lunch break scene was the Oxford Arms. Further up the road from the pub was the grass knoll down the bottom of the flats where Lee lived as a child, this was where they filmed the children playing football.

The video also saw Lee's first flying trip as he was suspened by a crane on the elastic of nylon 'Y' fronts.

Shut Up
The 'Shut Up' video was easily the best Madness video it featured Lee flying again and Madness (Barring Suggs who was dressed as a robber) dressed as policeman.

The video also saw the first apperence of Madness' famous stand.

Also in the video was Chris playing the 'Super Yob' guitar.

In the video Madness walked in to a room and up the wall, across the celling and down the other wall.

Driving In My Car

The Morris Minor was used as the car for this video as the band used to transport their equipment in Mike's Morris Miner Van so the Morris came up as an obvious choice.

Grey Day

'Gray Day' was shot in the shop window of Bowmans, a shop in Camden High Street.

The shop Bowmans had to sell some of its property to meet tough economic problems.

Bedders was really pissed off that he had to wear grey face make up along with the rest of the band.

Cardiac Arrest

Carl played the part of the bussiness man who over works and has a 'Carrdiac Arrest'. At the begining of the video Carl is seen walking out of a house. This house was suggested by Lee and was later found out to be another one of Lee's childhood address'. After parting with £50 it was agreed that Carl could be seen coming out of the door of the house.

Also in the video was Madness riding around in a real London red double decker bus with Lee as the conducter. Lee collected a faw pasengers on the way and collected a bit of money as fairs which then went towards the budget.

Bed And Breakfast Man

The song 'Bed and Breakfast Man' was not released until it was put on an E.P. in 1986 but the song was actually on the first Madness album 'One Step Beyond'.

Return Of The Los Palmas 7

The video of the Los Palmas 7 was one of the easiest video that Madness did, quotes Chris. When we did this video we used snippets of film from the 70's and 80's and then all we had to do is walk around Kenwood park in North London in cowboy out fits looking mean and moody, eat a banquet in a big room

And finally eat a meal at the Venus cafe in North London which was actually our production meeting.

Night Boat To Cairo

'Night Boat To Cairo' was one of the best Madness songs ever but it's video was a very low-tech green sreen technology.
