South Lake Tahoe, CA/NV
3.5 hours drive from the Bay Area, along Highway 80 to 50, lies the relatively isolated community of South Lake Tahoe. This town @ 6000ft straddles the California-Nevada border, and it's pretty obvious where one state ends and the other begins - play "Spot the Casino"!
The mountain pass that Highway 50 winds, climbs and descends through was clear of snow the day Anthony and I travelled - it had snowed the three days previous, however, and this was evident from the snow piled up along the roadside, coating the hills, and falling from the pines along the way. Chains not required - this time...
Once we made it and checked into the Days Inn on the main drag, it was time for food - where else but McDonalds?! The air was brisk, so a good walk was in order, and down to the shoreline it was. Weird seeing a sandy lakeside beach with a fair amount of snow cover... hmm... the lake itself is completely surrounded by mountains, all of which were covered in snow, making for some great pic opportunities...
The sun set relatively quickly behind the peaks, so it was time to retreat back to the warmth (or so we thought) of the Days Inn, and fire up the gas heating. A couple of Heinekens and crap cable TV shows later (around 8pm)it was time to beat a path along the snow-bordered street to the local Irish Pub, where it was time for some remarkably skilful games of Pool whilst consuming more liquid refreshments and stoking up the Jukebox with some likely tunes! This soon deteriorated into sitting in the main bar listening to the Jukebox, making fun of Americans, and graduating from beer to Bloody Marys and Jim'n'Cokes for myself and Anthony respectively. However, a grand chinwag was had and we retreated back to our room much better for the whole experience around 1.30am...

The Go-Betweens @ Slim's, San Francisco
The Go-Betweens reforming is one of those things that music fans wished for, but never think will actually happen! However, their late 80's break-up wasn't due to any friction between songwriters Grant McLennan and Robert Forster, so there always existed the possibility, and after solo work from the both of them came this years "Friends of Rachel Worth" album (featuring Sleater-Kinney as backing band) and supporting tour...
