Minor began as a simple garage band in White
Plains, New York (USA), in early 1997. It has become techno/electronica
based since the addition of Dave Cart. After evolving for several months,
they became a semi-hardcore jungle (that's 'drum and bass'). "Dave's music
and musical taste is pretty damn good. He has many good beats and you can
kinda dance to them."
"So, how'd you come up with the name 'minor?'"
"First off, most garage bands are young," says lead Mike
Tartàglia. "But how many are electronica? Few. To say, we are of
the minor-ity. So we used 'minor' to describe that we are of a small
number of amateur electronica bands. And just so ya know, we use a French
translation along with the name, because we are afraid of it being
misinterpreted into something a little nasty-sounding when translated."
"What about DJ's? Do they count in your 'minority'
description?"
"Not really. You see, they are spread all over all
genres. There are hip-hop, trip-hop, big beat, and jungle DJ's, as well as
rock DJ's commonly found at petty school dances. Nonetheless, they're all
respectable."
"Respectable?"
"Yeah. A larger amount are disk jockeys primarily because
one guy can do it. For example, you wanna start a band, but there is no one
that you know of that is willing to be in it with you. Do you know what I
mean? Sometimes, it is better to go solo if it is difficult to find other
members, which could easily happen."
"Tell me about the other band members; Dave Cart, Andy
McMahan, and your brother."
"Well, Cart is cool. He knows music, and what's good. He
could also carry a good beat. Andy's fast on the drums, but there are some
things he has to sacrafice. . . his accuracy is off. My brother, Dave, is
very talented on the bass. I credit Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin for being
his 'missing in action' mentors."
