In Your Chains

I am afraid of the fame, but I
Know I won't be ashamed, because
I don't have to have everything
I don't need to be anything
You wouldn't want me to be
Just say that you'll come home to me

My love speaks till it's understood
Makes love that wakes up the neighborhood
Keeps me warm when I'm bare, and it
Takes me away from my chair, and it
Takes all the shade from the grey
It changes the dark into day
You watch the tears fall from my eyes
I watch the stars fall from the sky

And sometimes it feels so bad I wake up the neighborhood
And sometimes I oversleep just because it feels so good
You can't read my mind but it's written on my face
I'm whole in your body and I'm free in your chains

I am nothing but a brick, you see
You are the beautiful deep green sea
Alone I will weigh down the world
With you I sink and I sink until
You're all that I need to breathe
I have everything that I need
You pull me back up on the shore
You show me what life is here for

And sometimes it feels so bad I wake up the neighborhood
And sometimes I oversleep just because it feels so good
You can't read my mind but it's written on my face
I'm whole in your body and I'm free in your chains

I still live on my own, I can't
Help it but you're good for my soul, I am
Waiting to bring you here with me
As I lay down in my deepest dreams
You're hanging out with your friends
And I'm watching the TV again
If distance is all in the mind
No one's closer than you and I

And sometimes it feels so bad I wake up the neighborhood
And sometimes I oversleep just because it feels so good
You can't read my mind but it's written on my face
I'm whole in your body and I'm free in your chains
In your chains

In your chains, I'm
In your chains, I'm
In your chains
In your chains....

HISTORY: One night at Adam's house, he began playing a chord sequence he hadn't yet used for a song. I began mumbling a melody over it, and then a first verse. However, I had a hard time coming up with more words, and didn't like the sound of the (then only half complete) chorus that Adam had written for it. Frustrated, I gave up on the song and went home.
The following night, Adam had convinced me (via a conversation over the internet) to continue helping him with the lyrics. After throwing in numerous lines (including "whole in your body" and "free in your chains"), I got off the internet and listened to him play me the song.
Later on, we worked out the harmonies and recorded a demo. The song turned out to be good enough for Adam's 2001 CD, "Last Impressions". The unique thing about this track is that it features me on lead vocals, something that I didn't expect would end up on a serious album release by someone else.
