Confederation Bridge

Prince Edward Island?

Crossed at the crossing

After decades of hype, PEI finally became connected to the mainland as of June 1, 1997 via a 14 kilometre umbillical cord. This grandiose engineering marvel is a very efficient 2-lane system that makes me long for the paving of the entire Northumberland Strait. (H-Simpson)In case you didn't notice, I was being sarcastic!(/H-Simpson). This apparent panacea to long ferry waits and lost economic revenues has been periodically closed due to high winds and blowing snow this year alone. And the view! As you can clearly see one has a picturesque snap of the Garden Province (middle left in photo), visible only when you ascend a high point of the structure half-way across. Coughing up a $35 toll before traversing this steeply walled link conjures up images of American interstates rather than the longest bridge in the Northern Hemisphere (or some other superlative). Of course if you are one of the fortunate tourists who own a motor home or a tractor trailor, you would have a more favourable panorama. Otherwise your alternative is dealing with neck strain to take a peek while attempting to negotiate the crossing. The camera and I fell out of the passenger window no fewer than 3 times before this shot was successfully garnered. A very disappointing departure from the isle, salvaged only by a remarkable sunset during this mid-July 1997 excursion.
