GRRL POWER?! |
They are loud, wear clothes even louder than their shrill voices, and chant "GIRL POWER" whenever opportunity permits. I am of course talking about one of the most popular 'bands' today, happily riding on the wave of success and exploiting it unashamedly at the same time; launching their own line of merchandise that covers about everything and anything you can think of, from pencil cases to polaroid cameras and making a movie about. . . you guess it . .themselves. If you are still with me, you must have by now figure out who I am writing about. . . that is, the SPICE GIRLS. No, I don't hate them. . . . I don't know them personally hence I don't know enough about them to hate them. . . but I do abhor what they are doing to drag down the status of womankind everywhere. Their crap songs apart, their pathetic. weak attempts to be politically-conscious never fails to make me feel sick , such as declaring their support to the Tory party (who ironically lost in the elections) and citing Magaret Thatcher as the original Spice Girl ( or something along the lines of that. .anyway, the point is Magaret Thatcher ironically did nothing for feminism when she was in power.) Their wannabe feminist stance makes me worried about the message that they are sending across to young girls all over the globe. Apart from screaming "GIRL POWER" whenever the spotlight is on them, what have they done to help reduce sexism in the world? Parading around half-naked in tacky outfits and singing horrible computer-generated songs that incidentally have sexual connotations? Using their sex appeal to sell records and then trying to pass themselves as feminists is a large paradox in itself. Do they realise that they are making feminism appear as a joke and further degrading womankind by exploiting their bodies ? Someone please tell the Spice Girls that GIRL POWER is about using your brain and not your body to succeed ! |
