No Doubt, Beck, and Metallica Featured on PBS's On Tour

PBS has jumped into the live-concert fray with On Tour, a new show featuring a slew of live acts. Sting, Steve Earle, Nil Lara, and Amanda Marshall all kick off the premiere one-hour episode, with No Doubt, Metallica, Beck, Blues Traveler, Smashing Pumpkins, and the Cranberries to follow soon. Armed with twelve cameras and a forty-eight-track audio system, the On Tour crew traveled across the globe from April to August in 1996 to record concert footage as well as interviews and glimpses of backstage life. "We want viewers to have the feel of being at a live concert," says On Tour producer John Diaz. "We really feel the vitality of this vastly eclectic range of talent is going to come right through the television screen as no previous filmed concerts have ever done before."

The footage comes from all over: the first episode features a Sting show from Vancouver, B.C.; Steve Earle in London, Ontario; Nil Lara's 1996 HORDE performance in Buffalo, N.Y.; and Amanda Marshall playing at the First Avenue in Minneapolis, M.N.. Thirteen episodes are in the can right now, so check your local PBS listings for days and times and set your V.C.R.s!

oh no! beck's down! everybody stand back and give the man some air! this from Wall of Sound:

Beck: He's a Limper, Baby

That swanky cane Beck is using onstage these days is more than a fashion accessory, it's a physical necessity. The Odelay kid sprained his right foot early last Monday in Milwaukee during a performance. "I was doing a show," he explains. "Entertaining people." Beck was onstage during an afternoon radio concert when he "sort of twisted my foot." Then it was off to St. Louis for another show the next day, where he "kind of aggravated it, yeah.'' X-rays were taken, but there was no break. Luckily, the sprain wasn't severe enough to require a cast, but it did make walking difficult. Undaunted, his performance at another radio show in Pontiac, Michigan, on Wednesday was an inspired effort; even though he was relying heavily on his cane for support, he was his usual commanding self onstage, right down to the floor slides on "Where It's At." But the cane was more than just a crutch--it was also a swashbuckling prop. "I'm gonna try to temper myself," he says of future performances while the foot heals. "We'll see if that happens. It's hard to refrain from getting into playing when you're onstage, especially with a good audience." And there are lots of audiences in Beck's future. After this swing of radio-station shows ends on Tuesday, he jets back to Europe for several major shows (including the giant Glastonbury Festival in England), and then on to Japan. Finally, it's back to the U.S. for a series of HORDE dates. "I don't really have a lot of expectations," Beck says of the latter. "We've done a lot of festivals, and we've played with Neil Young before. I'm hoping it's an open-minded audience, maybe a little older than the Lollapalooza audience. We definitely want people to enjoy themselves while we're playing. We'll see when we get there.''

by the way... here's a link to a review of that Philadelphia Y100 Fez-tival that just went down.. looked like a pretty good show..

with the new wu-tang clan album coming out next week, all eyes are on the wu-gambinos and their next move.. rumors about a tour with rage against the machine, the cd's track listing and the enhanced cd portion have fueled the frenzied anticipation of this double cd-set.. so what does this have to do with the beck? well, it looks like the RZA of wu-tang and beck are going to be teaming up on a hip-hop album.. the complete story from New Music Express:

BECK'S MASTER CLAN!

BECK, WU-TANG CLAN's RZA and members of CORNERSHOP are all involved in a hip-hop supergroup album being put together by Dust Brother Mike Simpson, Dr Octagon collaborator The Automator and De La Soul producer Prince Paul. The album has been described as a hip-hop 'Four Seasons' - a reference to Vivaldi's celebrated concerto. Work on it is due to finish in July with a release in the autumn. DJ Shadow is also featured on a handful of the tracks on the album. The Automator said: "There's going to be a lot of singles on it. Everything is 'hood-oriented. We ended up making tunes rather than long, drawn-out pieces." Dreamworks, the Steven Spielberg and David Geffen-backed company that Mike Simpson A&Rs for is, not surprisingly, among the labels foremost in the running to sign the project.

sorry there haven't been a helluva lot of updates lately.. but to be honest.. beck really hasn't been doing that much newsworthy stuff! aside from releasing his latest single from 'odelay' and signing on to the H.O.R.D.E. tour (still waiting to get those confirmed dates!) mr. hansen has been laying relatively low.. however HERE's and interesting tidbit.. beck teaming up with .. bill gates? check it - Wall of Sound reports:

Beck, one of the biggest names in today's music world, is teaming up with the biggest name in the high-tech industry, Microsoft, and their highbrow publication Slate. The New York Post reports that the Grammy-winning artist will be contributing an article that documents a typical day in the life of the very atypical rock star for the May 26 issue of the cyberzine. The piece will appear in Slate's Diary column, which has featured similar articles written by various poets, politicians, and other notables. Michael Kinsley, former left-wing commentator on CNN's Crossfire and current editor of the online publication, personally tapped Mr. Odelay to pen the piece. Already proven to be a successful lyricist, Beck will now have a chance to flaunt his literary prowess. Fans who are more interested in his music, however, can catch him this summer on the HORDE tour.

date: may 6/97

let's start of with the good stuff.. the beck web had THIS online:

"i'm a driver, i'm a winner.. things are gonna change, i can feel it.."
Those infamous word uttered in Beck's breakthrough song "Loser" are from "Loser" director Steve Hanft's new independent film; "Kill The Moonlight" about a month in the life of a race car driver. Beck has contributed 3 previously unreleased tracks for the films soundtrack, which will be released on Sympathy For The Record Industry in early June. The tracks; "Leave Me On The Moon", "Underwater Music", and "Last Night I Traded My Soul's Intermost For Some Pickled Fish" are folky "One Foot in the Grave"esque tunes. The movie itself will premiere on June 13 in Los Angeles at Laemmle's Sunset 5 Theater..

hooray! new beck tunes! the rest of this stuff isn't exactly new news, but i thought i'd throw in this info just for anybody that hadn't heard anything about them yet..

quick update!

aside from the news on a remix album, it looks like beckheads around the globe will be getting their hands on some new ORIGINAL material from beck sometime in the near future.. according to an exclusive interview on SloJam Central by squeegee, a new record released on one of beck's side labels, K Records, could be on the way.. here's an excerpt from the interview:

SQUEEGEE: I heard a new album on K is going to be coming out soon; when is this coming out and is this older material?
BECK: Yeah, we started recording it in July of '94 and we recorded about 15 songs. And those sat around forever. Then I went back last June and did a bunch more. So at this point I just need to go back and finish the songs from the two sessions.

because it's coming out on K records, it's really tough to get a date on this.. but at least we know something is on the way! wow! for all the info and the entire interview.. click here and jet to SloJam!

hey! the site's been up a week! kudos all around..

here's a little more info on the new beck remix album.. this was originally posted in the online music mag Addicted to Noise on April 9/97.. (so i'm a couple of weeks behind.. give me a break.. i'm still getting the hang of this!)

Addicted To Noise staff writer Gil Kaufman reports:

Little Beck Hansen seems to have really arrived. The cover of SPIN, the cover of Rolling Stone (where he slags the SPIN cover, nice touch), a million-selling album... So what's next? No, he's not going to Disneyland, he's going to Remixland.

Joining the ranks of Bjork and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the diminutive showman will be releasing a remix album later this year that will feature a number of previously unreleased and European-only rewrites of the hits from his Grammy-winning album Odelay.

Scheduled for inclusion are a Lloyd ("Lawdy Miss Clawdy") Price mix of "Where It's At," also retouched by the Dust Brothers, fifth Beastie Boy Mario Caldato and U.N.K.L.E., Jon Spencer's version of "Disko Box," which was included only on the European version of Odelay, and the Noel Gallagher and Aphex Twin re-engineering of "Devil's Haircut."

The still-untitled set will also contain a mix of the falsetto slow jam that didn't make it onto the album that Beck's been playing in the encore portion of his shows. According to a source at his label, DGC, the remixes are all in the can and the only hold-up is the clearance of all the samples, which could delay the planned summer release until early fall.

Just how large is Beck living these days? Well, a source told us that the singer, (who turned down a fat sum from a beer company that wanted to use "Where It's At" in a cheesy commercial), was recently asked to do a photo shoot for one of those highly-suggestive milk mustache ads, although his people said they "weren't even sure if he drinks milk."

date: april 23/97

great news for beck fans around the world! word is that we'll be getting our hands on some new (sorta) beck material sometime in the summer or early fall! local radio station CFNY in Toronto reports that beck is putting the finishing touches on a remix album that will feature various cuts off of 'Odelay' in different forms.. unfortunately, it seems that beck and the people at Geffen are having some problems clearing the use of various samples used in the remixing the songs, so things may or may not get pushed back further.. keep checking back here for the latest info on this exciting project!
