ZGC-history

About six years ago four guys decided to form a band, and like in many other cases these guys weren´t exactly great musicians. So, what to do? Hmm... let´s form a PUNK-band! You don´t need to be able to play very good, right? Right. Well actually, contrary to the popular myth, you have to know how to use a guitar, your drums etc if you want to play music that anybody wants to listen to. So we learned. Eventually.

Who were we then?

The first line up was: Stefan Lundvall - vocals, Erik Odeldahl - guitar, Henrik Lindgren - guitar, Stefan Guteklint - bass and Bjarne Gudmundsson - drums. We went under the name MOMENT 22 - that´s Swedish for CATCH 22 (you know... the book by Joseph Heller). At the time none of us had read the book or even seen the movie, but it was a really cool name! We recorded two demos. The first one on a four channel portable and it was NOT a very good demo. Believe you me. With lyrics about people melting in the sauna and serving your best friend soda mixed with sulphuric acid, no one really liked that demo except us in the band. Our second demo "Ensam i Paradiset" ("Alone in Paradise") was recorded in the fall of 1992. Now Henrik had left the band so Stefan Lundvall played guitar as well as singing. Erik also sang lead vocals now on a few songs. Luckily, I might add, just a few - he really sounded horrible back then. Not at all like now, when his voice can melt the icy hearts of all the women in the world:) Anyway, the demo was very well received by the punkers in Stockholm and the punk fanzines all over Sweden. It was even chosen the fourth best demo of 1992 in CLOSE-UP magazine!!! Wow! Whee! Whoppee!!! It had six songs on it, mostly really fast punk - our sound was compared with Swedish bands like Strebers and De Lyckliga Kompisarna. The demo was pretty soon sold out.

Just a few months after the demo was released, the band split up. There were many reasons but the main one was our growing disillusionment over the Swedish punk scene. Not that we were really hard core punkers or anything (we weren´t really punkers at all, we just played punk music) but we grew tired of playing in front of audiences where the people were all stoned out of their minds or too drunk to stand up. I mean, when going on stage you had to navigate through massive pools of shit and puke... and I´m not exaggerating. Well, maybe a little:) (I hope I didn´t sound too negative there - I certainly didn´t mean to. We´ve got our roots in punk music, after all. I remember one time at a gig in Rågsved when I had to look where I put my feet on the stage - there were quite a few people sleeping on it. Perhaps that says more about our music than the audience?)

A few months after we split up, we reformed again. This time as a band with heavier influences. We have all grown up listening to bands like Kiss, Iron Maiden, Accept, Metallica etc, so it was more natural for us to play that kind of music. A new drummer, Jocke Borén, was recruited and Henrik rejoined the band. During the next two and a half years we recorded four demos and changed our name about a million times. I think at least one or two of our songs were OK. After a while we tended to lose our melodic influences and started to sound a lot like bands like Pantera and Korn. At least I (Erik) got tired of that, so we started a side project. This we called THE ZERO GRAVITY CAMELS. The name comes from a very funny book by the English writer Robert Rankin, one of the books in his Brentford trilogy - I think it was "The Antipope" but I´m not sure. The music? Well, the music was pretty straight forward three chord punk - a lot like the almighty Ramones with a dash of NOFX. We soon found that this kind of music was much more fun to play than the other heavy heavy shit. So the main project split up. And we reformed again with a few changes.

Our former singer Stefan Lundvall now handles the drums and sings backing vocals. Erik Odeldahl handles lead vocals (a lot better than during the Moment 22-days) and plays guitar. Henrik Lindgren plays guitar and sometimes manages to sing a few words into the microphone. Our new bass-players name is Thomas Grossman, and mainly plays...you guessed right - bass!

The music still has its roots in punk, but we´ve added a lot of other influences to the mix. We´ve just released our first demo (titled "Demo 1" - how imaginative!). It´s got seven songs on it. There´s only one really fast punk song on it, and I don´t think there will be any of that kind on our next demo. You never know though....
