Metallica's first album. Originally released on Megaforce. The record shop owner Jon Zazula really liked this fresh young band and tried to get them a record contract. When this fails, he founds his own record label, Megaforce, and signs Metallica as his first band. The working title to this album was "Metal Up Your Ass", but the record distributors didn't want to distribute an album with such name, so they called it Kill 'em all, which means Kill all the record distributors. The album was recorded in May 83, and had its top position at #120 on Billboard in February of 1988. The collectors should look out for the double LP set with gatefold sleeve, and the limited edition with two bonus tracks. |
In February 84 Metallica visited Europe for the first time. They went on a tour supporting Venom. During this trip, the British label, Music for Nations, released the 'Jump in the Fire' EP to promote the tour. The live tracks were recorded on studio, with some crowd noise to give it a live feeling. Jump in the fire was originally only released in Europe. |
Maxi single released in the US only. |
Most of the material on this album was written in October, November and December 83, and it was released in the US by Megaforce 27 July 84. The collectors should look out for the double vinyl set released by Music For Nations, and the French mis sprint (this cover has green instead of blue). The Australian gold CD and the picture disc are also hard to find. |
Only released as promo 12" EP. It comes in two different colours - black vinyl and a special green glow in the dark vinyl. Please note that bootleg copies of the green version exist, so be sure you get the real stuff. This is one of the rarest Metallica items available. US only. |
Yet another 12" very rare promo from "Ride The Lightning" album. Side A has an edited version of this song which you can only find here. |
Featuring the original Garage Days on the B-side. Included is a cover tune, originally recorded by Blitzkrieg, and one track by Diamond Head. These tracks are now also available on the limited edition re-released of Kill 'Em All. "Garage Days Re-Revisited" is the follow up to this recording. Watch out for the coloured vinyl's, these are very hard to find, as well as the vinyl gold disc and the picture disc. Both without cover. |
Metallica started to record this album in Denmark September 85, and ended the recording session with Flemming Rasmussen 27 December of the same year. It saw the light of day in Mars 86, and this was a total different album compared to the other two, both lyrically and musically. There's lots of cool versions of this album. Look out for the double album. The firsts tree albums were re-released by Music For Nations as double discs, but only Master Of Puppets comes with a poster. |
The first official 7" single released by Metallica, or should I say their record label in France as I don't think the four guys wanted this to be on the streets. Only 500 copies was printed. |
Garage Days Re-Revisited was released in October 87 to introduce Jason, their new bass player, to the fans. One of the tracks was left off the British version so it could qualify for the singles chart. In Japan they included the lyrics, a biography as well as a large poster. This is a really great disc featuring only cover tunes by old favorites. Garage Days is now out of print and can be hard to find. |
Last Caress / Green Hell |
...And Justice For All sees the light of day after 9 months of recording. This is the first full album to feature Jason Newstead, and the Diamond Head cover The Prince is a bonus track on the Japanese edition. Also look out for the Japanese tin can that have a CD and a T-Shirt. |
...And Justice For All was never released as a single to the public, only promo copies was pressed and sent out to the press and radio stations. The edited version of this song is only available on these promos. |
This was the first single from the "Justice" album, and it was only released in Europe. Available as a 12" disc and CD, but if you're lucky some very cool promo items exist. The B-side tracks are the covers "Breadfan" and "The Prince" which later appeared on the "One" and "Eye of the beholder" singles in the US. |
Metallica have never released any "Greatest hits" or "Best of" collections, except for these promo samplers which are very hard to get. They are released when Metallica have new albums out, and sent out to radio stations to make them play songs from their first albums as well. All versions comes with different covers. |
When the first "Mandatory Metallica" CD was released in the States, the European record company released this one. It doesn't have a name, but is called "The Whiplash Sampler" as Whiplash is the first track on the CD. |
A single only released in the US in two formats. Yet another cover drawing done by Pushead. |
The first major single release by Metallica, and also the first one with a video. It has The Prince as B-side in the US, while some live tracks recorded in Dallas on February 5th 1989 was put on the European releases, as The Prince already appeared on Harvester Of Sorrow there. There are just too many versions of this one, you can collect in years, and still miss some items. Look out for the picture disc and the vinyl promos with covers. |
One was released as a five track mini album in Japan for a reason I don't know. A limited edition on this comes with a wristband. This CD is still available and is a good chance to get Breadfan on CD if you don't have the American One Single or the European Harvester of Sorrow Maxi Single. |
This song was recorded for an Elektra sampler. It later appeared as a B-side on the "Enter Sandman" single. |
There is a lot of box sets out there with collections of ordinary singles or albums, but this is the only one put out by the band, or should I say their record company as Lars didn't like this box set. "It is done by the company to make some extra dollars" Lars said in an interview, "If you don't have the new live tracks, tape it from a friend". The box contains a poster and the following EPs. Jump In The Fire, Creeping Death, Garage Days Re-Revisited, Harvester Of Sorrow, One, and a live disc only available here which contains these tracks: |
Metallica got lots of new fans with this album. You understand that it is a good album when you see how many singles are. Vertigo UK released a tin can with the CD, a video and a T-shirt. They did 35.000 copies of this, so it might still be possible to find. There is a bonus on this album as well in Japan,- So What. The cover is almost totally black, but this isn't the first all-black Metallica cover. The two Collectors editions of One, and the EP box set released two years earlier was all-black as well. So from late 1989 to autumn 1992 all Metallica covers where dark as night. |
First single from the black album. It was released a few weeks prior to the album to get some media exposure before the album came out. This was the first introduction to the new and black covers for many fans. Even the picture disc is almost all black. |
A ballad. The fans hated that there were two ballads on the black album. "They have sold out" the die hard fans said, but haven't we heard that before. They said that when Ride The Lightning was released as well, "Fade To Black" is a ballad too remember. Killing time was chosen for the B-side this time. Metallica also recorded this track way back in 1982 on a demo tape when they were a three piece band. |
A really heavy song. Look out for the rare 12" picture disc, or any formats with the Elevator version of Nothing Else Matters. This is really cool with orchestra and stuff. There is a lot of different B-sides here, and some of them appears on other singles as well. The live tracks are recorded in Moscow September 28th 1991. It was not released in the US. |
This time So What was chosen for the B-side. This track was already on the Japanese edition of the Black album, and still is, as a bonus track. |
Yet another ballad from the black album. This was probably the biggest hit from that album. |
These 3 tracks are recorded live at the Fredy Mercury tribute show at Wembley Stadium after he died of AIDS at April 20. It was mixed by Flemming Rasmussen the same day, and the day after, and this single was released only a few days later. The cover is done by James and this is the first time we meet the "Scary Guy" who later became their mascot. |
Not really released to the public, only a few promotional copies exist. |
This tape was given to the visitors at a record store on Manhattan on January 21st 93, when Metallica turned the whole store into a Metallistore. Both sides of the tape have the same songs recorded in Moscow 1 1/2 year earlier. The tape cover is designed by James and it is an early version of the Scary guy which later ended up on the Live Shit box set. |
Lars & Co. wanted to release a live album but couldn't decide which show to pick, so instead of releasing one show, they did three, one on CDs and two on videos. In addition you get a 72 pages book, a snake-pit pass and a scary guy stencil, all packed in a good looking box. |

A re-release of the hit. This time a live version to promote the Box set, so the cover is changed and the B-side tracks aren't the same. A cool item that didn't sell very well. One of the singles even have 3 different versions of the same track. |
Very rare double promo CD. This disc was printed and distributed to radio stations in the US. All the "F" words are edited, and you will find tracks from all the concerts in the box. A bootleg exist, and the different between these is that the promo comes in a Cardboard sleeve while the bootleg in a plastic jewel case. |
After five years of wait Load sees the light of the day. New image and new music, and the fans says that they have sold out, as they have said since Ride The Lightning. Collectors should look out for the limited edition. |
English promo interview disc sent out to various radio stations along with a question sheet so the hosts could "interview" the band themselves. The interview is done by Ian "Molly" Meldrum in Sydney, Australia. This is the same interview as is in the Australian Load CD. |
First single from Load, released to get some air play and publicity prior the album. The Herman Melville mix of the song which is on some of the versions is done by Moby. |
This single introduce us to the Motorhead covers. Metallica have been Motorhead fans since the early beginning, but this is the first time they have recorded any of their songs in studio. They recorded them in a rehearsal for Lemmy's (Motorheads main man) 50th birthday party where Metallica jammed with him. Try to find the red box with the single featuring all the Motorhead covers plus a poster. |
3rd single follows the two previous with 3 parts, and live plus a demo version as B side. |
Released only in the US when Metallica finished the European leg of the world tour and was ready to start in the states. It is funny to see how much greater all the European items are compared to the US versions. Singles are much more important for a band in Europe. |
The 7th album, the music style is almost the same of the Load album. |
The 1st single of ReLoad. One version released by Elektra/Asylum for US only and another released by Polygram International for UK only, this one divided in two parts. |
Released by Elektra/Asylum and by Alex in 3 parts. |
Released by Imprint in 3 parts. |
