One of Metallica's co-founders, Lars, is often called upon to serve as the bands spokesman. Talkative, insightful, and often intensely serious, expeciall when discussing the band, he can also be as wacky as the next Metallifuk when the situation calls for it. Born in Copenhagen, young Lars followed in the footsteps of his tennis pro father and competed seriously in the sport right up until his family moved to Los Angeles in 1980. Upon realizing that his neighborhood alone was crawling with good tennis players, Lars abandoned it as a career and dove full-tilt into his other longtime passion: music, specifically drumming. Proficient on air-drums and hitting cardboard boxes with sticks at age 12, Lars talked his grandmother into buying him a drumkit in 1977 and practiced while fantasizing he was Deep Purple's Ian Paice. Once in L.A., Lars was dismayed to find that hardly anyone had heard of Iron Maiden, Saxon, Motorhead and other European Metal favorites. He searched for a like-minded guitarist to jam with and found one James Hetfield, a guy who appreciated the finer things in metal. Some months later, they gave birth to Metallica in Lars' garage. We doubt that the kid who dreamed of playing Wimbledon, regrets the career change that has him now playing stadiums (not to mention crowds) of a different sort. |

James Hetfield was born on August 3, 1963 in the well known city of Los Angeles, California. He was brought up in a strict Christian Science house hold, his older brother Dave Hetfield had guitars in their garage which he used to play about on. His mother tried to get him more interested in classical music, and even paid for 2 years worth of piano training... Whilst not in MetallicA he enjoys hunting and beer... Some of his influences on becoming a master of lyrics for Metallica were, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, and Motorhead. His jobs before his singing career were, a janitor, and a sticker factory worker. James had a band before Metallica, and it was called "Obsession". James is the quiet person in the band; usually in interviews he doesn't talk as much, he hates interviews. But, when it comes to concerts, he is the call of the Devil!!! James' parents were Christian Scientists, the "big" jobs. But James, he liked to lie low, a quiet kid into sports. His older step-brother played the drums in a local band. This made James turn to rock in general; Black Sabbath. In his junior years, James and his family all moved to Brea, California. This is where James started out with his guitar playing. He played in the "high school party band" called Obsession, playing mostly Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Around this time, he got hooked up with Ron McGovney, who was soon to be metallica's first bass player. Then after, James got to meet Lars Ulrich through a newspaper called the "Recycler". This is when Metallica was truely first formed. James found himself playing the guitar instead of singing so that he could concentrate on guitar. They started to look for a front-man, but it never worked out. James continued to do both singing and rhythm guitar playing. With that, Metallica were on their way to popularity! |

Jason Newsted was born on March 4th, 1963 in Battle Creek, Michigan. His influences for music and performing are all of the bass players in the bands, Kiss, Rush, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Yes. His first jobs before becoming a great bass player for Metallica was that he was a busboy and a dishwasher. Just like Kirk, Jason had a band before he came to Metallica, it was called "Flotsam & Jetson". Jason got his first bass at age 13, played with it, then got bored of it. After 5 years, he took took it out again, liked it better, then started to play seriously. He quit school to join his first band "Flotsam & Jetson" (His parents accepted his forgiveness now). He played in clubs and concerts and released a record with the band. Then along came James, Lars and Kirk feeling sad that they lost their bassist, Cliff Burton, in a bus accident. They were looking for a replacement. They asked Jason to try out, mainly jam and spend time with them. Then the big news came, James asked Jason if he would join Metallica. Jason was so happy that in response to James' offer, he screamed at the top of his lungs right in the middle of a restaurant. |
