The American-born and bred Wang was one of last year's most promising finds. And in this sophomore Mandarin outing, one detects a calculated move away from the sounds of his first album, 'Love Rival Beethoven', where he was positioned as the wholesome boy-next-door singing bubbly dance tracks. Here, he specialises almost exclusively in ballads with a repertiore which borders on the languid. But Wang, who is classically-trained and plays quite a few instruments, distinguishes himself with polished singing techniques, although he sometimes seems to just mouth , and not emote, the sentiments. Still, this is forgivable, given that he's still barely 20! The most outstanding track here? 'Regrets in the Wind', a soulful ballad fairly dripping with unrequited yearning. His beautiful tenor likewise takes on an etheral quality. Let there be no doubt that Wang fairly brims over with potential. Problem is, the material here is too restrictingly mainstream when one can easily see him venturing into, say, jazz or Broadway show tunes. One senses that, given the opportunity, Wang can be tensely dramatic or mischieviously playful. Perhaps in his next album?
