Review-Revolution

Wang Leehom-Revolution
Rating: 4 stars out of 5 stars

If you haven't already heard of Wang Leehom, well, meet one of Taiwan's most drool-worthy pop idols. Blessed with dreamy good looks, this brainy American born Chinese started playing the violin at six. He is also a graduate in Music Composition from Williams College ,and a graduate student at Boston's prestigious Berkeley School of Music. Wang crossed over to Taiwan after winning a pop music competition. Revolution is his fifth album, an effort which recently garnered him best Producer and best Male Vocalist at Taiwan's Golden Melody Music Awards. Revolution shows off Wang's keen understanding of musical genres, with its impressive selection of rock, jazz and R&B tracks. While the composer/singer doesn't aggressively challenge the winning formula of mainstream pop, he does strive to present his listeners with new styles of music. Lyrical inspiration also comes in a refreshing if somewhat gimmicky avenue - check out Revolution's second track, Frozen Dreams, which integrates lines posted by his fans on Wang's website in response to his subject, "Youth Deprived of the Right to Determine Their Own Future". The album, on the whole, is surprisingly easy-listening, although a little too electic. Wang's Mandarin enunciation also needs work, but Revolution more than delivers its promise of new sounds without causing audio alienation.

Galaxie, 1999.
