Tour stories from fans
I met XYZ through their fan club, which I joined between XYZ and Hungry. I did some listening parties for them as well as calling up radio stations and writing magazines.
To thank me for my efforts on their behalf, Patt Fontaine called me one day. "Hello Cathy, This is Patt Fontaine of XYZ." My response was "Oh my God!" He found that humorous.
I don't know how many total times we talked over the next couple of years, but it was truly fun; he's a person I'll never forget.
At the first concert at the Mirage in Minneapolis, he bought me dinner and we sat at the bar and watched Foreigner's set. Terry, of course, kept snitching french fries from my basket. (Like I was going to stop him!)
The concert, of course, was wonderful. They rocked so big!
I saw them again at the Mirage during their tour. It was in August 1992. This time I got to buy him dinner. My friends and I took the band to the local Perkins at about 4 a.m. It was a real treat... for us as well!
The concert that night was fabulous. I believe it was that show where the guys did an acoustic version of After The Rain (and What Keeps Me Loving You?) Beautiful, absolutely moved me to tears. This second show was with Tony Marcus on guitar (Marc had wanted to be in Florida with his family) and Joey Shapiro of Colorado on drums.
Before the show that day, Patt and I were in the bus talking and he helped me solve a problem. I only hope someday I can thank him for that. I had been telling him about my worry about grad school, that I didn't think that I really wanted to go. Patt asked me why I was thinking of going if I didn't really want to.
I'd never realized it before, but I was only checking out grad schools because I had been expected to all of my life to go to grad school, right after college.
Patt's simple question made me realize that I should be able to determine if I wanted to go to grad school or not. Well, I didn't go then, and my life has turned out just great.
Patt called me to tell me that they'd broken up. I wasn't home, of course, so all I got was the message on the machine. Then I moved across campus, so my phone number was changed; I wrote again to Patt, but the PO Box for the band was closed. That was the last we'd communicated. On his message he mentioned plans to have another band with Joey.
Here's a couple of submitted tour stories!
"XYZ have been one of my favorites for years. I saw them the night they got signed in Reseda, Calif. They played with Pretty Boy Floyd, who I thought was terrible, but once XYZ came on, they changed my life. I'm a musician, and they brought inspiration to my life.
Years later I was bartending at a place in Phoenix, Ariz., called The Librairy Cafe, and they came to play there. It must have been that same tour you were talking about where Marc and Paul did not come. As a guitar player who looked to Marc as inspiration, I was bummed but nevertheless they did a great job! Terry was cool as hell and chatted with me for a while about the band. I told him when I saw them last, and he informed me that that show was when they got signed."
Fellow xyz fan, jayson r. conzoner
I have been a fan of XYZ since their first album came out. I found out about them because I was a big fan of Dokken and Don produced their first album so I had to pick it up and man am I glad I did. I have all three XYZ albums with my favorite still being the first one. My three fave songs are "Maggy," "Souvenirs," and "Face Down in the Gutter." I just recently landed one of the CAGE CDs and I love it too. It seems to get better every time I listen to it. My band plays a cover of XYZ's "H.H. Boogie." It always gets a BIG response...
I have tried to find info on [XYZ] on the net but no luck except for your web page. Shame too. They were absolutely killer live too. I saw them in Dallas during the tour for Hungry. They were tight! I also just got a hold of an old promo poster for Hungry which is HUGE! I laminated that baby and stuck it up in my drum room. I know all the XYZ songs on drums by heart after all these years. Our band has played many of their songs during our sets at local clubs and they always get a big response. The only downside is our vocalist has nowhere NEAR the range Terry has. But then again, not many do :)
I was lucky enough to get backstage at the Dallas show and get my Hungry CD autographed but the band didn't stick around long so I wasn't able to really talk to any of them. There were a lot of people backstage. Well just thought I would email ya. Love the page. Nice to see someone else out there who likes XYZ.

Hi!
My name is Brett and I live in Germany. There is a rock club in Möchengladbach called MG1, which like all rock clubs has good and bad phases - anyway, during the Gulf War I got to meet a whole gang of US soldiers who had been carrying tapes around of XYZ in the desert.
Apparently when an artillery attack started, they put on the headphones and dug down with XYZ until it stopped. They gave me a tape and I loved it! We actually covered a few of their songs in my rock band at this rock club regularly and it was a thrill to see people going crazy to the music. Great guys!!!
I started a web page which ran for a while as the "un-offical fan club" but I later moved from AOL. I had quite a lot of mail from people so I wish you all the best!! I would love to see the guys back together again as there are now quite a few rock groups rejoining again...
Kindest regards - Brett
