The birth of The Damaged really all started in 1996 when Kevin, Al, and I all played in The Detriments. Mark joined the Dets about a year or so later and the Dets enjoyed a nice 3 years of ups and downs playing some crazy fucking shows. In the spring on 1999 Kevin and I sort of knew that things were coming to an end with the Dets and we both started writing songs together for new band. When the Dets played their last show in September of 1999 at Pearl St. Nightclub, Kevin and I already had enough songs to begin thinking about who else we could enlist to play. It didn't take much time to figure out that Al and Mark would be perfect fits since we were already quite comfortable playing with them as they are also just good friends.
We began practices at Mark's dad's house and practiced 4 to 5 nights a week after we all got out of work. Before we even played our first show we went to Derek Studios in Dalton, MA and recorded "Small Town Hell", a 7 song CD/cassette released in January 2000. We hit the road and played our first few shows out of state just to see how things would run before we debuted it for the hometown crowd.
For the first year or so all we really played were hardcore shows. There really wasn't much of a punk scene left and we took what we could get. Sometimes we stuck out like a sore thumb and sometimes we got them to at least bob their heads. I think that the first year or so of shows we played was rather influential to our sound. The guys at shows we were playing were not in the mood for a bunch of snotty punks and so we played thicker, harder, and faster in order not to get eaten alive.
As we started to stretch our legs a bit we got began to get on more and more bills with punk bands and a crowd that was a little more receptive to us. In Febuary 2001 we headed into the Outpost recording studio in Stoughton, MA and recorded "Victim of Circumstance" which was then released in May. This was a dream for us because so many of our all time favorites albums were recorded here and it was a place that really captured our sound. It was also during the recording of this CD that we got into a huge brawl with some frat boys at the place we were staying and Kevin's teeth went through his lip. By next morning when it was time to record vocals, I was so beat up and hung over that it took me forever to even manage a squeak out of my vocal chords. But severals pots of coffee later, success.
I'm getting sleepy, I'll continue this tomorrow.
THE MEMBERS COLIN: Lead singer. A nicotine, caffine, and music addict. Colin was also the lead singer of The Detriments. Professional Yankee killer as well. Favorites places are the stage, Fenway park, and a bar stool. And he's brothers with Kevin. Email- ColinDamaged@yourmom.com
KEVIN: Guitars. Kevin is a self-taught guitarist who also played bass in The Detriments. When Kevin isn't slinging his axe, you can find him editing the newspaper, fly fishing, or drinking your town out of Guinness. His e-mail address is kdmoran@hotmail.com.
MARK: Drums. AKA Pie Guy. Mark joined up with The Damaged after playing with The Detriments. His influences for drums range from Lars Ulrich to Tim Alexander and from Danny Carrey to Chad Smith. You might not think he's in the band, being that he's the only one without a leather jacket and a pair of Doc Martens. Mark is probably one of the biggest WWF fans out there. Here's his Web site: http://hometown.aol.com/mjiggs13/Jiggshome.html. His e-mail address is mjiggs13@aol.com.
AL: Bass. Al Taylor hails from Cheshire but now calls Adams home. Al played guitar in The Detriments and switched over to bass when The Damaged formed. Al can play almost any instrument you put in front of him and is one crazy motherfucker! But you would need an entire webpage to cover his exploits, so I'll spare ya. An all around good guy and consumer of much beer.
