Their Arms and Their Faces

he once loved a girl whose hair smelled like shadows
he said that she lived like no one he knew
she smiled when she woke and she cried when she wanted
she, he once said, was too good to be true

the day that she left him he tried to be brave
he lay in his bed and closed his eyes
his hair had turned gray by the time he rolled over
and he, he claimed he had no idea why

his teeth ran away from his speech like a spider
yellow and scarred they lay in his throat
the girls have all hid their arms and their faces
they sit in the dark and just hope they can hope

he talks about love and why he can't stand it
scratches his cheek and blinks his eye
the girls are all gone now, their bodies were broken
and he, he claims he has no idea why
