autumn came and with her the tourists

driving up with their cameras in hand
to capture some of those orange-yellows
purple veins spidering across the tan
and every one of those leaves is broken
yet still they travel from miles around
they see the colors are that much more beautiful
because of the battle scars, ragged and brown
somebody watching while we're sleeping or as we drive
well i know you can buy them at the foodmart
up at the counter for a dollar ninety-five
but two days later half the paint is peeled
and i can't find much that's real
all that's left now, it seems, is reality t.v.
you say, "maybe i've been hanging around on earth for a few too many years
cuz i don't have a thing they'd want
i'd get kicked off the island before you could blink"
i say they don't know what they're missing
