Dear comrades:
In this opportunity we present them an interview with the North American band Youngland. Thank you to Kenn for the interview. The pictures were taken of Plunder & Pillage.
1- Introduce our readers to the band (history, members, ages, etc). ¿For that chose the name Youngland?
Scott - drums
Martin - bass
Kenn - guitar/sing
Scott and Martin are also in Extreme Hatred and I used to be in a punk rock band called Knockout. Scott and I would talk about White Power at different gigs we would see each other at and decided to start our own band. We asked Martin if he would like to play bass for us and he agreed. I chose the name Youngland for the love of my country and to use as a moniker for white nations around the world. I used Youngland to signify America as the youngest land.
2- Are any of the members in any political / skinhead organizations?
We think of ourselves as individuals fighting for a common world cause. We have a few close friends that we know we can count on the going gets rough. Although we think that organization is good and there are alot of units out there that look very promising, we chose to keep a small and more tight knit group.
3- What are the band's musical influences?
Certainly, Martin and Scott like the harder stuff, and I do too. But, my songwriting style is more Rock n Roll with some old punk rock influences. Of course Skrewdriver is a major influence, as it should be, and I think listening to Ian Stuarts song writing is profound. It takes a true genius to keep a song simple, yet use lyric harmonies that give his music distinction. I have learned much from just picking up the guitar and playing along with them. When I first heard the Skrewdriver ballads, I went out and bought an acoustic guitar the next day!! UNBELIEVABLE!
4- If you had to choose two or three songs of your band like the best which would be and that they speak?
We just got done recording four songs for our first 7" single that will be released at the end of March. They are Stand One, Stand All - Fight to the End
- Next door to Heaven (Valhalla is Waiting for you) and we covered Johnny Rebel's Nigger Hatin' me. Stand One, Stand All has more of a harder feel to it and it is short and to the pointand Talks about world wide white unity and that no matter what happens, white people are standing behind you. This song was my least favorite, but after we recorded it, it turned out to sound good enough that we made it the first song. Fight to the End is a little slower, kinda like a good 70's punk rock song. Like the name implies, we are not giving up, EVER! Next Door to Heaven is probably the most catchy song on the single and my favorite. I wrote the song about a Skinhead and a Klansman that were friends and would debat and sometime argue about their religious beliefs, but when trouble came around they stood behind each other no matter how bad things got. Then the Skinhead dies and the song illustrates his journey to Valhalla. Nigger hatin' me turned out pretty funny and was alot of fun to record.
5- Did you carry out few weeks ago a 7 '' single, is this their first recording?
We are looking for a company that presses vinyl and I think we are going to make the record cover ourselves. It may not be the best quality cover, but when you have to pay for it yourself, you have to find ways to cut costs. The main thing is that the recording quality is very good. This is the first time we have recorded and we are all very happy with the way it turned out. We all seemed to collaberate and work well together and we look forward to recording a full length CD in the near future.
6- Where does the band stand as far as religion? Are any of the members practicing of any faith?
I think we all feel that what ever relgion you are is your own business. I feel that one day all religions may come together to fight the filthiest religion of them all, the JEW!
7- Does Youngland plan on recording anything in the coming months?
At the present time we are still working out the specifics of the single, but we do have a few newer songs that are almost finished. WE may just do a home recording on my four track recorder in my living room to get a feel for what the songs are going to sound like and to get an over all opinion if the songs are even worth going any futher with. We recorded this way before we went in to the studio to record and it turned out very beneficial. We were able to listend to the songs and add or subtract parts to give them more substance. I advise everyone in a band to do this and see how much of the "feel" for the song is missed only hearing youself at practice. When I'm at practice I only really pay attention to what I am doing. When we record a song, I have a chance to sit back and get that "feel" which ends up changing the song a little for the better.
8- Youngland has had the opportunity to play live?
We have only played once. We were invited to play the Skinfest '98 in Cleveland Texas this past November. We drove 27 hours only stopping for gas and food, so when we got to the show we were very tired. When we got there, they informed us that we would have to play first, which we were not prepared for. We immediatly began setting up the equipment and started the show. All went well, except for the guy working the sound board. I don't think he really knew how to work it because the instuments kept turning off and on. Once he figured it out, we all had a great time.
