Daniel Rocks With Adalita

Meet the new prince and princess of pop. Despite "no comments" by representatives of both, the romance between silverchair singer Daniel Johns and Adalita, of the pop band Magic Dirt, is definately on.

At 26, Adalita (who officially rid herself of her surname Srsen by deed poll) is old enogh to be the 18 year old Johns's big sister but neither is letting the age difference stand in the way of what has become rock's most talked about couple.

The australian music scene hasn't seen anything like it since Michael and Kylie. "It is happening." confirmed a friend of Melbourne based Adalita. "I'm a bit protective of her but I think they're gorgeous together. I'm really happy for them".

The two bands have known eachother for years due to a friendship between their managers but the relationship between the two guitarists/singers really hotted up this summer when the groups toured Australia together.

Coincidentally, it was silverchair's first time on the road without the band members' parents because since turning 18 the trio no longer need their mums and dads as chaperones. It was also the band's first tour without having to worry about going back to school, with Johns, Ben Gillies, and Chris Joannou all successfully completing their HSC last year.

Along with the age difference, Johns and Adalita make a perfect ying and yang couple. She's the vivacious extrovert who starred in Black + White magazine's portfolio of nude rockers last year while he's the quietly spoken, vegetarian teetotaller who saves his wild acts for the stage.

"There are going to be a lot of broken hearts out there," laughed one friend. "Young boys and girls will be devastated- these two are like the prince and the princess of the indie rock world."

For the affair to last beyond summer-romance stage could depend on how both handle the expected publicity. Johns and silverchair have always been disdainful of any media coverage that doesn't centre on the band's music, but if he's seen in public with Adalita he can expect to have photographers shadowing their every move.

There's also the tyranny of distance to consider. While Adalita shares a house in Melbourne with two of her bandmates, Johns is still based in home town Newcastle with the other members of silverchair.
