This is a recent article taken from the Miami Herald (August 4, 1999) It's not often that you find a local band getting a lot of attention, but Crease is doing just that with its five-song EP, ...sixpack shy of pretty. The band, composed of Kelly Meister on vocals, Fritz Dorigo on guitar, Greg Gershengorn on bass, and Eric Dorigo on drums, has been together since 1994. Their songs are on radio stations all over the state (especially their remake of Jenny 867-5309.) Fritz Dorigo spoke with YO about the band and its progress. YO: What's the story behind your first single, Frustration? Fritz: The song itself is two years old; it was recorded before in demos. We recorded it for the EP and gave it to the lcal show on Zeta (WZTA-94.9 FM). Kimba played it, and one of the times she played it the program director was listening. He liked it and decided to put it up against big bands like Metallica and Smashing Pumpkins at night. People liked it. YO: Who thought of the title, ...sixpack shy of pretty? Fritz: Our bass player, Greg. He and his friend come up with a lot of funny sayings; we liked this one so we used it. YO: Is your first album, Interference, still available? Fritz: It's really kind of discontinued. There might be a few copies of it somewhere to be found though. YO: How did you guys get together? Fritz: Kelly, Eric, and I have been together about 13 years now. We were in a band called Excessive. The bass player left. I knew Greg through and old girlfriend. He came over, we changed the name, and things just worked. YO: You recently played at Zetafest: what stands out most about your experience? Fritz: The amonut of people who were watching. Seeing everyone go crazy when we started playing Frustration was just amazing. Meeting Def Leppard would have to be the second biggest moment. YO: Do you prefer headlining your own show or being the opening band? Fritz: Ultimately headlining is the place you want to be, but it depends on the band you're opening for. When you're in the opening band, the crowd's already there, which is good. As the headliner, you're responsible for pulling the people to see the show. YO: Who did you most enjoy opening for? Fritz: Def Leppard, because they're Def Leppard. Also Goo Goo Dolls, and we had a great time with Quiet Riot... they all have good memories and they're all great bands. YO: What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever done at a concert? Fritz: Nothing extraordinarily weird yet, just asking us to sign body parts. We think everything's pretty cool, fans making us signs, giving us photos, asking us to sign body parts. YO: What do you guys do for fun when you're traveling? Fritz: We went to Quebec and what we did there was just walk around and sightsee. At night after shows, if there's time, we go partying. Sometimes, if there's time and a guide, we tour the town. Lately there hasn't been that much time; we play a show and the next night we leave. Here, of course, we go out and party. YO: What are you listening to lately? Fritz: I can't speak for the whole band, because we all have different tastes. I've been listening to Van Halen with David Lee Roth, Metallica, and NOFX, and Neil Rogers on AM radio. YO: Do you have any news about siging with a major label? Fritz: We just signed with a music publisher, Warner/Chapel. We just got back from playing for a label in New York. After the show on the 8th, we're going to Atlanta, then back to New York again...we signed with the publisher and that's half the battle. YO: With the band's success, have any of you quit your day jobs? Fritz: No, that's not going to happen for a while. Success doesn't mean money. As of now, we all have two to three jobs, including the band. YO: When can we expect a new album? Fritz: I can't really say one month, two months, three months. We're still selling this one, and other stations have only had Frustration and Jenny 867-5309 for a month. We hope to record some songs in the future, especially ones we play live. |

These are some little facts, stright from Greg Gershgorn
How long have you been with the band? Since 1994, so about 5 to 6 years.
How did you guys get together? Well, my girlfriend and Fritz's girlfriend were best friends, so we knew each other from that. About 3 or 4 years after we met, the guys needed a bassist and I had just gotten fired from my bass job, so Fritz called me up and said, "Hey you wanna play with us?" and I was like, "Not really. . . I'm not really into the music you play." But he told me that the band was going to change the music style and even the name, so I decided to give it a shot with them, and they were just awesome.
What were your major influences? Well, even though we all have different musical tastes, Eric, Fritz, and Kelly were all big Kiss fans. I myself was actually forced to watch a Rick Springfield concert on TV with my parents, and I really just liked the way he could get up and make popular music. I also really liked old Pantera and old Metallica.
Are you all originally from Broward? Yeah, I think Kelly, Eric, and Fritz were all born here but I'm originally from New York. |
