In his Polish neighborhood, John was a quiet introverted type of child. At a young age, he took up accordian lessons, which caused him to get teased by local children. He later took up guitar and played in various clubs. When John was 15 years old, his family underwent an extreme hardship. His father, an abusive alcoholic, died from complications of diabetes, alcoholism, and depression. John had never had a close relationship with his father, and he did not grieve for him for many years. However, only one year later, his mother Edith suffered a massive heart attack and died in front of her 5 children, John included. To numb the pain of his losses, John began to drink heavily and do drugs. He continued to play music and in 1985, he met Robby Takac, and from there, the Goo Goo Dolls were born. Main
