Section 1: Megadeth: The Origin. Where did the name come from?
Back to the FAQ List

1-A: Where did the name come from?
There are many definitions of the term Megadeth, or more commonly spelled
and misspelled by the media, MegadeAth, with an "a". This is an exert from
a hit Parader issue from 1987:
Hit Parader: Dave, Megadeth is a pretty intense name for a band. How
did a nice boy like you think of a moniker like that?
Dave Mustaine: Megadeth represents the annihilation of power. We spell
the name phonetically because the meaning to us is the same you get out
of the dictionary-it's a hypothetical body count after a nuclear fallout.
It's a million deaths, and we want to leave our audience shellshocked wherever
we go.
Dave was sitting on a plane one day, taking a trip to somewhere and
he had grabbed some pamphlets for reading. The one pamphlet he picked up
was a protest against nuclear weapons and it had the definition of the
word 'megadeath' in it. Dave thought it was a good name and he decided
to take the "a" off of death, just so everyone would not think that he
was referring to death, but of course, that changed rather quickly.
1-B: Are there any other names for the band that didn't get used?
Yes. Another name that Dave Mustaine had thought up was 'Fire-Bomber',
except to use the name in German.
[Section 2: The Megamembers: Past and Present]
Back to the FAQ List

Dave Mustaine: After Dave was kicked out of/left Metallica, he started
up a band called "Fallen Angels". This band didn't go anywhere and soon
enough, David Ellefson came knocking on Dave's door. The two were neighboors
and well formed the band Megadeth. See David's reason for joining Dave.
David Ellefson: Before Megadeth, David was in a band called Killers,
which, just guessing by the name, was somehow Iron Maiden oriented. How
did David join Megadeth, well, it happened many many MANY years ago. One
morning Dave Mustaine(lead singer, guitarist) was suffering from a hang
over from the previous night and David decided to practice playing bass
that morning. The only problem with that is that Dave and David were next
door neighbors. Dave got so annoyed that he threw a flower pot at Ellefson's
window. The funny thing is that David didn't even notice it and went right
on practicing. (I wonder what his parents thought of that at the time :)
David was 18 at the time he met Dave and formed Megadeth.
Nick Menza: The only thing I know about Nick's past, is that his dad,
Don Menza, played the saxaphone part in the movie "The Pink Panther" This
gave Nick the opportunity to study with top jazz drummers, including Jeff
Pocaro.
Nick also has an interest in motocross and scuba diving. This is how
Nick came to be in Megadeth.
Nick acted as Chuck's drum technician (roadie), until Chuck made his
'last mistake' (according to Dave), and was fired. To quote Dave, in response
to the question of whether or not Nick Menza used to be a technician (roadie)
in the band: "I can answer it yes and no. Yes because we wanted him to
be in the band and because we were paranoid about Chuck blowing it. We
didn't want to lose out on the show that night or the next night, so we
always had him there. Yes because he was there. And no, because he WASN'T
a drum roadie. He was there as a drummer waiting for Chuck to fuck up!"
Marty Friedman: Marty had a couple of bands before he joined Megadeth
in Febuary of 1990. He was in a band called "Hawaii" which, according to
most people, would have been one of the heaviest bands around if it wasn't
for Marty's "Trippy" guitar solos. After that band, he formed Cacophany
with Jason Becker and released 2 albums. Marty and Jason soon split and
then each released their own solo cd's. Marty released 1 more solo CD (Dragon's
Kiss) after that, (both of which Jason played on) and then he joined Megadeth.
Jason released a few other cd's as well and has fallen prey to Lou Gheriks
Disease. (ALS) Marty heard about the open spot in Megadeth after auditioning
for Ozzy, which as we all know, was given to Zakk Wylde. I believe it was
Zakk that told Marty about the open spot in deth as well.
Chris Poland:
Jeff Scott Young:
Gar Samuleson:
Chuck Behler: Chuck was Gar's Drum Tech and when Chris got the boot,
Gar went with him because they were buddies and stuck by eachother. Dave
asked Chuck to take over soon after.
2-B: After Megadeth
Chris Poland: Chris was kicked out of Megadeth due to the fact that he
was stealing dave's gear to buy drugs. He started up the progressive band
"Damn the Machine" with his brother. This band is still going apparently.
I know they have at least 2 albums out. They recently changed their name
to "Mumbo's Brain".
Jeff Scott Young: At first Jeff had formed the band known as Broken
Silence. That band to my knowledge didn't go anywhere and then formed the
band "Little Earthquakes". They have/had an email address at
LEisShakin@aol.com
More recently (like, this year) He began recording his acoustic debut
album titled "circles". As a result, you can also reach him through this
email address:
WaterSongs@aol.com
He will be keeping records of this on the web at this site:
http://home.navisoft.com/watersongs/
I just visited this site, and there isn't any information on his album
at all. In fact, the only thing that is there, is an official web site
for some Brazillian guitarists named Bodi. Jeff has also been writing columns
for the Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine. (Don't be confused
with that geeky "Guitar One", magazine, Wolf Marshall writes that one and
they are NOT the same magazine)
Gar Samuleson: Was booted out of the band and now plays drums for the
band, Fatal Opera. They released an album in 1995 which is available from
Massacre records. Dave has also said that Gar acted like he was going to
drop the band at any minute, so Dave waited for his first mistake (which
would be his last) to finally be able to fire him with some validity.
Chuck Behler: After leaving Megadeth because of Dave's habit w/ heroin,
he came back to Detroit (Actually to a suburb called Livonia), where his
mother lives, and teaches at a local High School (Mrs. Megadeth is what
people used to call her). He supposedly received his Sonor Drums from the
Megadeth tour. Supposedly Dave sold them, but there is no proof of that.
He was in a band called The Meanies, which was a hard core band is no longer
around.
Robbie Cromwell: (Guitarist for Fallen Angels) After April '83, when
Dave Left, he played in a band called Fallen Angels.
Mike Leswick: (Drummer for Fallen Angels) See Robbie Cromwell
Lee Rash/Roach (David Ellefson's drummer) Lee: He was the original drummer
for Megadeth. He either quit or was fired by the band just before the recording
of the first Megadeth album, 'Killing Is My Business... And Business Is
Good!'
Jeff Scott Young: (Guitarist) Left Megadeth due to Pressure from Dave
M. (he was the producer for the So Far, So Good, So What! album) Formed
Broken Silence.
Present Musicians
The Present line-up for Megadeth is as follows:
Dave Mustaine: Vocals and guitar
David Ellefson: Bass and Backing Vocals
Marty Friedman: Guitars and Backing Vocals
Nick Menza: Drums

2-C Biography of the Band:
I found a cool bio from Dean Koontz. Neat layout and chronology in it
as well.
GODZILLA VERSUS MEGADETH by Dean Koontz.
One purpose of most band biographies is to convince the reader that the
musicians in question are the swellest bunch of people to walk the earth
since God distinguished human beings from apes by giving us a large forebrain,
erect posture, a sense of shame, and a fetish for wearing and collecting
shoes. Although Dave Mustaine, Dave Ellefson, Marty Friedman, and Nick
Menza seem like good people, I'm not going to pretend that, by comparison,
they make Mother Theresa look like Jeffery Dahmer, and I'm not going to
argue that the Lincoln Memorial should be torn down to make way for a giant
bronze sculpture of Megadeth. (Anyway, we all know that spot is already
set aside for the Elvis monument.)
Band biographies are also supposed to tell you what terrific, stupendous,
fabulous, thunderously good, keen, and special musicians these guys are.
I'm also going to break that tradition and assume that you are a member
of the shoe-wearing species that rules our planet and are, therefore, perfectly
capable of listening to Megadeth and already know they are flat-out the
best at what they do.
When writing the biography of a metal band, the author is pretty much
required--I'm almost sure there's a federal law--to use words and phrases
like "thrashmasters" and "ripping" and "grizzly-throated" and "speed-core
riffs" and "slamming chords" and "raging maniac" and "shitfaced." Okay,
there, I've used them.
Because music critics are believed to rely on band biographies for background,
the author is expected to cram the damn thing with more boring facts than
you'd find in a ten-million-dollar, Department of Agriculture study of
flatulence in dairy cows. It's supposed to include everything from an exhaustive
survey of their musical triumphs to Dave Mustaine's favorite color, Ellefson's
taste in hats, a list of three things that Friedman likes to do with Spam,
and Menza's views on the possibility of intelligent life on other planets
and in Libya.
Personally, I think any music critic worth his salt already knows everything
important about Megadeth. Every DJ and programmer in rock radio knows Megadeth.
Everyone who's managed to remain conscious at least some of the time since
1985 knows about Megadeth. Maybe George Bush has never heard about Megadeth,
but he's not likely to be reading this, so why should the whole band biography
be shaped just to educate him, even if he is a former President? Nevertheless,
I wouldn't want it to be said that I am a radical, so I'll bow to this
one tradition and give you a big wad of facts, presented in speedmetal
fashion.
-
1982: Metallica. Mustaine. Metallica, no Mustaine.
-
1983: Mustaine, Ellefson--Megadeth is born. Spelling error in the tradition
of Dan Quayle. Too late to worry about that.
-
1985: Killing Is My Business...and Business Is Good. Powerful debut.
-
1986: Peace Sells...But Who's Buying. First album at Capitol. Goes gold.
-
1987: The drummer Gar Samuelson is out. Chris Poland guitarist is out.
Life is tough. Mustaine and Ellefson stay. Jeff Young, Chuck Behler join
up. Life is good.
-
1988: So Far So Good...So What! Refining the sound. Reverend Jerry Falwell
doesn't like them much.
-
1989: Jeff Young and Chuck Behler are out. Life is tough. Menza and Friedman
come aboard. Life is good.
-
1990: Rust In Peace. Metal classic. Tipper Gore doesn't like it any more
than Jerry Falwell does.
-
1991: The Gulf War. Ted Kennedy and the Palm Beach scandal. Julia Roberts
leaves Kiefer Sutherland at the altar. Megadeth just keeps on keeping on.
-
1992: Nobody leaves the band. Nobody joins the band. Countdown to Extinction.
Megadeth is the top metal band in the world. MTV, "Rock the Vote," Mustaine
reporting the Democratic Convention. Politics. At play in the Land of Lies.
-
1993: Turmoil in the band. Life is tough, life is good, but life is never
easy.
-
1994: Youthanasia. Mustaine writing at his peak. Ellefson, Menza, Friedman
playing gangbusters. Powerhouse band. Another spelling error, this time
in the title of the album. Too late to worry about that.
With those tiresome facts out of the way, let's consider what's most important
about Megadeth. For one thing, they don't embrace the pretentious gloom-and-
doom that, in its most extreme and relentless form, turns some metal bands
into parodies of themselves. Those groups come from the humanity-is-a-wad-of-
phlegm school of music: baby-think dressed up to seem profound. Don't get
me wrong. Megadeth isn't a safe band by any definition, but their music
is self- confident enough to be shot through with moments of hope, which
makes it unique.
Dave Mustaine has said, "My life is average, my life is normal, and
anybody can have this kind of existence if they're prepared to work for
it. My life is a mirror of what anyone's life can be." He is sincere. He
believes in hope. His lyrics deal with the dark and the light of life,
which is one reason they have more depth than those of the competition.
Look, I'm no music critic; my mom never would have wanted that; but I think
Youthanasia contains at least three standouts--"Train of Consequences,"
"Addicted to Chaos," plus the piece the two Daves wrote together, "I Thought
I Knew It All" --and the music supports the words with singular, driving
energy.
Another important thing about Megadeth: It's hard to picture the band
pulling a Sammy-Davis-Dick-Nixon Kodak Moment and hugging the President,
regardless of which extreme of the political spectrum occupied the White
House. Art is greater than politics. That's a truth that seems to elude
most actors, writers, and musicians these days. Art used in the service
of either left or right-wing politics is no longer art; it's either propaganda
or sentimental bullshit--two forms of "entertainment" in which Megadeth
has not yet indulged.
I also doubt you'll ever see Mustaine on Oprah!, trying to make capital
out of his recovery from drug addiction. You won't see him whining about
being a victim of society or his upbringing. He knows that the fault lies
in himself. It lies right there among all the virtues. We have the potential
to be devils or gods, and life is about the struggle with ourselves. That's
what makes life so interesting.
Finally, what's important about Megadeth is that their music is fun.
It's rock-n-roll, kids. It was always meant to be about fun. About freedom.
About life and getting on with it. Megadeth hasn't forgotten that. They're
fit, they're hot, and they're ready to play.
These guys pass the imaginary Godzilla test. Imagine if Godzilla came
stomping through a city where the band was performing in concert. The old
thunderlizard would topple skyscrapers into rubble, smash cars underfoot,
melt tanks with his breath, attempt to impregnate every automatic car wash
he came across, and in general behave appallingly. Some bands, if he stepped
on them, would disintegrate like puffballs, and there would be no proof
they ever existed. Other bands would squish like butter, and old Godzilla
might slip, but he'd get his balance right away and go stomping on toward
the doughnut shop or whatever the hell he came to town for in the first
place. If he stepped on Megadeth, believe me, he'd know he stepped on something.
Oh, yeah, of course, he'd smash them dead. This band is only human, after
all. But 'zilla would get a foot full of hideously spiky, barbed, deeply
penetrating bone fragments, and the last chords of their singular music
would burst from their instruments, into his wounds, and through his bloodstream
with devastating effect. He'd limp out of town, back to whatever suboceanic
hole he crawled out of, and if somehow he survived the wound, one day he'd
start a band and play the most bitchin' guitar you ever heard.

[Section 4: Megadeth's Gear]
Back to the FAQ List

4-D: Rust In Peace Gear:
Dave and Marty's studio set up is the same live (different settings of
course), VHT Power Amps and Wagnar preamps. Bradshaw Racks.
4-D: Guitars:
Marty: 2 guitars live: 2 Jackson/Kelly models. One has 22 and the other
has 24 frets. The 24 Fret one is used in Holy Wars. Dean Markley Strings
Dave: King V Double Neck Jackson, Dunlop Picks, D'Addario Strings
4-D: Bass:
David: RotoSound Strings, Gallien Krueger Amps, Samson/Hartke
4-D: Drums:
Nick: Vic Firth Sticks, Aquarian Skins, Zildjian Cymbals and Yamaha Drums
4-E: Countdown To Extinction Tour
This is from Micheal Kaye, the guitar tech for Dave and Marty and also
from the CTE Tour Book.
4-E: Dave Mustaine:
Dave uses the Jackson King V guitar, made by the Jackson custom shop in
Ontario, Calif. His bridge pickups are seymour Duncan JBs, and they're
wired pickup to volume to output. The pickup selector and the tone knob
are bypassed, and the neck pickup is never used. I adjust the nut for Dave's
string gauge which is .010 to .052 D'Addario XL-147s. The ebony fingerboard,
24 fret necks are maple neck-trough with poplar wings for the body. They
have fixed Kahler bridges with no vibrato arm.
4-E: Amps
We're using Custom Audio Electronics' Three Plus preamp, which has three
separate channels, each with its own gain, master vol., tone controls,
and bright swtich. Channel One is voiced like a blackface Fender. Channel
2 is voiced like a Marshall JCM 800. Channel 3 is voice like a Marshall
Plexi. There's also a master section that has another master vol., a presence
control, and a bass control, and you can assign that to any of the channels
at any time. They're designed for by John Suhr, of Pensa-Suhr guitars,
in conjunction with Bob Bradshaw.
The signal goes trough the preamp into a Bradshaw/Rocktron switching
system equipped with Rocktron Hush noise reduction. Each guy has a couple
of Yamaha SPX-900 reverb in his rack. These are hardly used for tracking,
but they take care of all the time-domain effects live - delays, chorusing,
flanging, modulation, pitch shifting. Dave also has an Alesis Quadraverb
and he has a newer BBE, a model 862 is stereo it has a little more headroom
and is cleaner sounding.
From there, the signal goes to the stereo power amps. We have VHT 2150s,
Marshall 9100s, and MosValve 500s. Dave has four Crate 4x12 cabs two are
loaded with 50 watt Celestions, ano has 25 watt Greenback Celestions, another
has 75 watts Celestions.
4-E: Mic's
Each cab is mixed up with a Shure SM-57 and a Sennheiser MP-421.

4-E: Marty Friedman:
Marty uses a Jackson Kelly, which is like an exaggerated, pointy Explorer.
It has 24 frets, a Kahler bridge, Duncan JP Pickups, and no tone knobs.
Marty's strings are .010 to .052 Dean Markleys. The other guitars he uses
: 91's Gibson Firebird, a G&L ASAT Classic, a reissue vintage '60s
Strat, and an '80s Les Paul custom that Marty for a lot of neck pickup
stuff. He has a Alvarez acoustic that he uses for bridge sections and middle
eights.
4-E: Amps
Marty has a similar setup : two Crate 4x12s with 50 watt Celestions, one

4-F: Youthanasia Gear
For the Youthanasia tour and CD: I use Ampeg amplification, D'addario strings,
Modulus
Graphite & Jackson Basses
Recorded with
-
I use D'Addario nickel wound, soft gauge strings, D'Addario Steel 130,
100, 80, 6X, 4X, extra long sets for the Modulus' since they have a long
scale length.
-
Jackson 4 string "Thunderbird" neck through body bass which is a dark blue
color and is a model a tech and I designed a couple years back. I used
the blue one on the 5 string songs on "Youthanasia".
-
I recorded with an Ampeg SVT II bass amp into 2 8x10 cabs. I bring along
an extra amp and 2 more cabs as backups.
Tour with
-
tour with 2 Modulus Graphite
5 string basses
-
graphite 5 string bass w/ a red w/a blue finish over it, maple tops and
feature a 35" scale,bolt-on necks that are made from graphite
-
Graphite 5 string bass w/a natural Honey color, maple tops and feature
a 35" scale both have maple tops and feature a 35" scale,bolt-on necks
that are made from graphite.
-
I used a 78 Fender P-bass with a Dimarzio pickup and Badass bridge for
the 4 string songs.
-
I tour with an Ampeg SVT II bass amp into 2 8x10 cabs. I bring along an
extra amp and 2 more cabs as backups.
Live I use a Samson
-
UHF wireless unit that goes into a dbx compressor/limiter into the amp.
Out of the amp I send a signal through a Tubeworks tube direct box and
then that signal goes into the P.A.
-
This is in addition to the microphone that is on the speaker cabinet as
well. In the sidefills of the monitor system on stage I combine the microphone
and DI sound to get the optimum tone for me to hear clearly on stage.
-
As for settings of the amp it's been a long time since I looked because
it's been real consistent and fortunately I have a great tech who makes
any necessary adjustments for me everyday at soundcheck.

Track #1 is an interesting interview done by a friend of Dave's back when
the lineup was D. Mustaine, D. Ellefson, K. King and L. Roach
Tracks #2-#6 are medium-quality studio rehersals from about 1985 when
they were recording Killing Is My Business... And Business Is good! --
The lineup was D. Mustaine, D. Ellefson, C. Poland and G. Samuelson
Tracks #7-#9 are the demos which the Killing Is My Business lineup recorded
in a garage. They have been re-mastered, or I could also send you the un-re-mastered
versions
Track #11 is a demo of very high quality from 1986, off the album Peace
Sells... But Who's Buying? with the same lineup as the Killing Is My Business
material
Tracks #12-#17 are the demos from the album So Far, So Good... So What!
High quality; lineup was D. Mustaine, D. Ellefson, C. Behler and C. Young
Track #18-#20 are from demos for Countdown to Extinction
Track #21 is from Youthanasia.
The rest of the tracks I'm not sure if you want to print or not because
unlike the first 17, the last four have been copyrighted in a few countries.
They are all high quality demos with the same lineup: D. Mustaine, D. Ellefson,
M. Freidman and N.Menza.

Back to the FAQ List

Due to some lengthy interpretations in each songs, the songs won't appear
in order. This is done to accomodate the rest of the song list and shorter
explanations.
6-A: Killing Is My Business....and Business is good
Last Rites/Loved to Death
This is about a guy who killed his loved one. It's the classic 'if I can't
have you, nobody will' idea. To quote Dave M: "Loved to Death's a love
song. It's just that our approach to love is a little bit smuttier than
everybody else's. You don't have to say 'baby, baby' in every song, or
talk about how good your climax was the night before to express love, because
love is a four-letter word--either you get reamed by it, or you get excited
by it. That's how we look at it. Our love songs are true-to-life happenings.
On our first LP, 'Love to Death'-- that was our first attempt at a love
song. It's the only song where we actually do say 'love' in it. lt was
like boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, girl doesn't love boy,
so boy kills girl, so no one else will have her. That, is a typical love
story. I've been in love a bunch of times with people who were way out
of my batting average, and I figured, 'Fuck you, I'm going to kill you,
so no one else will have you.' That's our approach. It's something that
people can still relate to." (Mustaine, 1987)
Killing is My Business...And Business is Good
About an assassin, paid to kill a guy, then his next job turns out to be
the previous employer.
Skull Beneath the Skin
About some satanic rituals, but also has several lines in it that seem
to describe the creation of Vic Rattlhead, our favorite mascot.
These Boots
The Nancy Sinatra Cover song.
Ratlhead
About a live concert experience..akin to Metallica's 'Whiplash'
Chosen Ones
I have 2 explanations for this song, I know I'm gonna get some emails about
the first but I have no clue if it is true or not, just laugh at it:
-
The song is about the Killer Rabbit in the movie "Monty Python & The
Holy Grail" OR
-
This is about a band of warriors who have to head into a monster's lair..The
ending could be either a)they failed b)one of them one and became the monster..hard
to tell which one.
Looking Down the Cross
At some point in 1984, Dave commented that this was about Jesus looking
down the cross when he was Crucified on Mount Calvery.
Mechanix
About a car mechanic who wants to have sex with a woman that comes into
his garage for some car work.
6-B: Peace Sells but Who's Buying
Wake Up Dead
This is about NOT waking up your wife after you've come home at 4am after
having an affair with another woman because if you wake up your wife, your
gonna wake up dead.
The Conjuring
About the details of a Satanic Ritual: "I read the Satanic Bible and all
that stuff, but it was so adverse to what I wanted, and is hasn't been
until the past couple of years that all that stuff's been shaken. I've
had to go through a lot of spiritual healing to get clean. I don't think
people really realize how intense that stuff is and the marks it can leave
on you. There was one time where I did some witchcraft on this guy who
had punched me, and it physically affected him, and to this day I regret
it. That will never leave my mind--the power of that stuff. I would rather
light a candle than curse the darkness. There was a time when I was very
comfortable being part of the darkness because I didn't understand the
light. But now I like seeing people smile more than watching them wrinkle
up their forehead and make the devil's sign. If half these kids only knew
that the way they make the devil's sign really means 'I love you' in sign
language anyway." (Mustaine, 1995)
Peace Sells
This is about the pressures of the cold war and at the height of everything,
people began to wonder how much it would cost to buy peace."As long as
people keep stealing, hurting and mistreating people, there's a lways going
to be something that you can pick up on and say, 'Look, this is wrong.'
Granted, we sing about it, but we take a negative approach to what we do
sing about. 'Hey the devil is there, but he's a moron. That's why he's
buried in dirt." (Mustaine, 1987)
Devil's Island
"Devil's Island is part of the French overseas department of French Guiana.
Established as part of the French Guiana penal colony in the 1850s, it
became notorious for its unhealthful tropical climate and for the cruel
treatment of prisoners. France made plans to abolish the penal colony in
1938 and completed the removal of prisoners early in the 1950s." (Grolier
Multimedia Enclyclopedia)
Good Mourning/Black Friday
About a serial killer, linear notes say 'inspired by Dijon Carruthers'.
The song goes into graphic details into his actions, killing to get clean
etc...
Bad Omen
Also inspired by Dijon Carruthers. Satanic rituals, maybe the song is more
into his mind, while good mourning talks about his actions
I Ain't Superstitious
A cover song origonally by Willie Dixon
My Last Words
About a game of Russian Roulette
6-C: So Far, So Good, So What
Into The Lungs Of Hell(instrumental)
Set The World Afire
This is about the supposedly upcoming 3rd world war in 1999.
Anarchy In the U.K.
The sex Pistol's cover song. Steve Jones Makes a guest appearance on this
song. Megadeth actually misheard several lyrics original Sex Pistols's
song, for better or for worse. 'Other cunt-like tendencies' is actually
'Another council tenancy.' 'No dog's body' is actually 'No, don't worry.'
But, Megadeth performs 'Anarchy' as a 'fun' song and not as a serious one.
Careful analysis of the lyrics is not necessary.
Mary Jane
Contrary to popular belief this song is not about pot, it's about a ghost
named Mary Jane that haunts a forest. Why does she haunt the forest you
ask? Well, she began to screw around with witchcraft and her father found
out. Well, here dad burned her alive and she haunts the forest as a result.
502
502 is a police term for driving drunk on the interstate highways. I believe
this also has to do with the fact that Dave needs a new high, asides from
the drugs and that speeding under the influence was the answer. Dave would
later be arrested for this.
In My Darkest Hour
This song is an expression of how Dave felt when he learned that Cliff
Burton died.
Liar
This song is about Chris Poland, who is accused to by Dave of stealing
his guitars to buy drugs: "Chris Poland--you know what?--he could die tomorrow
and it wouldn't affect me...Chris has never made ammends to me for stealing
all my gear. I had a collector's item Echoplex which just dissappeared,
all sorts of guitars, which were all stolen to cash in for heroin. I'm
willing to forgive and forget, but until he comes and makes ammends with
me then I'm not willing to give in." (Mustaine, 1992)
Hook In Mouth
This song is about the PMRC. This is the group that introduced all those
"Parental Advisory" stickers on your cd's and tapes. The main idea of the
song is to show how the PMRC wants to control what we, kids, adults etc...listen
to for music. It's censorship.
6-D: Rust In Peace
Holy Wars...The Punishment Due
"It's revolving around the way that war is immanent and it doesn't really
matter what country it's in...Khadafi [Libya]...Khomeini [Iran]...It's
funky how these guys have wierd names, these idiots that lead different
countries. But it shows you...war's war, no matter where you're at." (Mustaine)
Hanger 18
Thanx to John Foradori for defining the song. Hangar 18,takes its name
from the supposed US Air Force Hangar that housed the remains of any UFO/Alien
debris/bodies/evidence that was recovered at any time. Hangar 18 has had
many locations, from Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH, to a few New Mexico
bases, where nuclear bomber wings are deployed from, to the imfamous Area
52 in Nevada. The song was inspired by drummer Nick Menza's belief in the
UFO/alien phenomenon, according to lead singer Dave Mustaine during a conversation
on the Megadiner. Some major events associated with Hangar 18: The Roswell
Crash of July, 1947. Supposed remains of two bodies and a third, live alien
were recovered, as well as a craft. It was also home to the official USAF
investigation into UFO's, Project Blue Book, located at Wright-Patterson
AFB.
Take No Prisoners
This song is about, how a nation, like the US, goes off to fight a war
and throws all they can at their enemies but when people begin to think
about what's right and whats wrong, the soldiers all of a sudden become
the bad guys. It's the same idea as the Vietnam conflict. When the soldiers
came home, people hated them because that war was wrong and it should never
have involved the US.
Five Magics
This is about a guy who wants to learn how to use Magic, I think Dave is
talking about black magic arts though. Electricity, Alchemy, Sorcery, Wizardry,
Thermatology back in medival times were looked upon as satanic.
Poison Was the Cure
"It just wasn't working anymore. In the end I wasn't even getting high,
and I started to see my life falling apart around me. I wasn't interested
in the things that I was good at--which are making people think and playing
music --so I decided to give it away." (Mustaine, 1990)
Lucretia
Tornado Of Souls
"'Tornado of Souls' is about me getting out of a dysfunctional relationship.
It has nothing to do with killing anybody." (Mustaine, 1993)
Dawn Patrol
This song is about how we,the human race, is polluting the earth and basically
trashing the place.
Rust In Peace...Polaris
Rust In Peace...Polaris came to Dave when he was driving home from Lake
Elsinore and he was tailgaiting some guy who had a bumper sticker that
said "May all the nuclear warheads Rust In Peace". Dave took this as a
strong statement and imagined all the old warheads stockpiled on a beach
with kids spraypaiting them and such. True Story.
6-E: Countdown To Extinction
Skin O'My Teeth
I quote from the video for this "This is a song about how many times I
tried to kill myself and I just couldn't get the fucking job done...This
is Skin O'My Teeth."
Symphony Of Destruction
"Basically what this song is about is, you take a person--a typical stereotype
numbskull--and you give him the old shit, shower, and shave, throw him
in a monkey suit and he can run the country. I mean, they got a monkey
up there right now. As he starts to become more this political puppet,
things start to get worse." (Mustaine, 1992)
Architechure of Agression
The song speaks for itself. It's how wars and attacks on people are planned
out precily, just like architecture.
ForeClosure of A Dream
The song was inspired by Dave Ellefson's parents. His parents' farm in
Minnesota got foreclosed on after the Peace Sell's album. Source: Interview
with Ellefson and Mustaine from August 1992 Request magazine
Sweating Bullets
This is a song Dave wrote about being schizophrenic.
This was My Life
Countdown to Extinction
This song deals with people that kill for fun and sport. It also has a
quote in the middle of the song that says the extinction rate of many animal
species is "One Hour from Now, another species of life form, will dissappear
off the face of this planet forever...and the rate is accelerating."
High Speed Dirt
This song is about Sky Diving. The Term "High Speed Dirt" is used when
your parachute doesn't open. There are some sky diving scenes in the video
for Holy Wars. Other sky diving terms in the song are "Dirt Torpedo".
Psychotron
This song is about a robotic assasin that is not only a robot but also
a human, that's why they call him PsychoTron. I wonder if this has anything
to do with Terminator 2 or the first Terminator. (as of November 1st, there
is now a game for the PC out, called "Psychotron")
It is also based on another one of Nicks beliefs ( such as his UFO beliefs
). In Russia, a biological experiment was condicted where a small chip
would be injected into the base of the head which would render the injected
person completely open to suggestion, and completely tolerant of pain.
The idea was to make some super-warriors who never got hungry, cold, bored
or tired, and they would do exactly what you told them to do. Even if half
their body was blown off, if they were still alive, all they would want
to do was accomplish whatever goal you told them to achieve ( i.e. infiltrate
America and kill the president ). Nobody would be able to stop them, and
they would make Russia all-powerful.
Captive Honour
Ashes In Your Mouth
Ashes In Your Mouth is about the dream of freedom that some people have,
and when they finally achieve their freedom, they find that they are worse
off than they had been before.
6-F: Youthanasia
Reckoning Day
The main idea in this song is karma. Dave doesn't need revenge or those
kinds of tactics. He knows that in the end, God is going to kick their
butts and that is when he will get his justice. Everyone ends up dead and
everyone will eventually meet their maker.
Train Of Consequences
This is about a man who is a gambler during the 1920's or so during the
Great Depression. Many references are made to "riding the rails" and so
forth. That was a common term used for getting around the country. It's
not a true story.
Addicted to Chaos
This is about Dave M's drug counselor who sobered Dave up, then overdosed
on cocaine. In other words, he didn't practice what he preached.
A Toute Le Monde
This song deals with the time Dave tried to kill himself with valium pills
in 1993..(source: a bootleg from Night of the living Megadeth)
Elysion Fields
"In Greek mythology the Elysian Fields, also known as Elysium or the Isles
of the Blessed, were the dwelling place after death of virtuous mortals
or those given immortality by divine favor." (Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia)
The Killing Road
This song is about life on the road while touring.
Blood Of Heroes
This song is about how Dave and David have survived all the drugs and booze
etc...and are still around. Most people wrote them off and are now on a
comeback.
Family Tree
This song is about a kid who grows up in a family where his dad is sexually
abusing him and as he grows up, he begins to remember all the memories.
Youthanasia
This is about how kids, young adults and I guess I can include the Generation
X crowd are being hung out to dry by everyone, including parents and the
government.
I thought I knew It All
This song explains that, both Dave's, after going through all their ordeals,
thought they knew everything but it turns out they were wrong and that
they still need reasons for what they don't know.
Black Curtains
This song deals with Dave M's personal fear of a Nuclear war.
Victory
I guess this is a sum up of Megadeth's carreer. This song has so many references
to past albums.

-Sacriledge and Blasphemy
-
-Sets the stage today
So, of course we know that the world is corrupt and this is what Dave means.
This line just means that, the reason it's gotten to this point, of all
the crazy shit happening, is due to sacriledge and blasphemy and among
other things as well, greed, power hungry people. The idea of Power corrupts
absolutely and absolute power corrupts comes to mind.

-The more swelled our tongues became
If you look at the history of the world, society wise, you'll notice that
there are no more taboos, no one considers anything to be "wrong" etc...If
your into Art history at all, you'll notice this, or even music history.
What we thought was bad, 10 years ago, bellbottoms for example or long
hair, is deemed as a "whatever, do you what you want to, I don't give a
damn" idea. As some say, "you can get away with murder nowadays"

It doesn't really matter what you base this on, what is being said is that,
we'll take the example of Nostradamus. What Nost. said, a lot of years
ago, (don't ask me how many, I don't know when he lived) is coming true.
How can a dude, from so long ago, have guessed what is going to happen
now? We can argue about Nost. truly being a psychic/clarivoyant later on
but this is just spelling out a confusion of sorts. It's also saying, "HEY,
WERE HERE!" "were" would be referring to prophecies, Satan and his band
of merry idiots, I think you get the idea.
-
-Talkin' 'bout no vision
-
-Talkin' 'bout no dream
This means the same as the above really. Just that, it's not a dream from
some dude, it's actually happening. I can also see this from another side
and that is, your actually watching what you dreamed happen, like a bad
movie so to speak.

-And rides the seven-headed beast
Supposedly, the world is going to be under 1 ruler. (metric or imperical?)
I don't know very many details about this but I guess I'll learn more as
time goes on. The 7 headed beast could mean alot of things and no one is
really sure. Some people think that it's a watered down version of the
United Nations, others, like myself think it's the new European Economic
Council, yes the same one that was crapped out in WW2. It could be alot
of things, just that, the basic idea "1 man is going to be in charge of
the world and a council of people will be backing him up." This leads me
to a conclusion, the saying of, for every boss, there is a man higher than
him and a person higher than that person. This makes you question the concept
of a "god" or "satan" (suprmeme evil and supreme good) as well.
The 7 Headed beast, not a literaly interpretation of course. The beasts
are the countries of the middle east, more specifically, they all ruled
over the middle east in general and Jerusalem in particular. I know 6 of
them at the moment.

There is supposed to be an 8th head as well, it's related to the 7th in
some way. The 8th head will be a confederation of Muslim nations as said
in Ezekiel 38 (I THINK, not sure if that is the right place)The lands mentioned
are all muslim, they are:
-
Magog- Iraq up thru Turkey into the southern Caucus region.
-
Meshech and Tubal which covers the same region.
-
Persia- Iran
-
Cush- Sudan
-
Put-Libya
-
Gomer- Turkey
-
Beth Togarmah- The southern Republics of the former U.S.S.R.
I personally don't believe this at all but it's one of those "we'll
have to wait and see" issues.
-
-Ten diadems, to rule them all, to crown them all
-
-The world, religion at his feet
I believe Dave is talking about the same person here, not only will this
1 man be in control of the world but also the world's religion and he does
this through a few means. 1)through this counsel 2)through the 10 diadems,
which could be a new version of the UN or another new group. 3)Through
the collapse of the christian religion and the downfall of the vatican.
4)OTHER religions will go down to, so, don't go on your "Christians are
dead etc..." bitching spreees.
[Section 7: Questions and Answers]
Back to the FAQ List

7-A: Killing Is my Business...and Business Is Good
Question: Why does Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good sound
so bad?
Answer: Well, it's sort of the band's fault and sort of not. See, Combat
Records gave Megadeth $8000 to make the album with. The band, however,
was at a stage in their life where they were focused on drugs as much as
they were on music. So, they spent half of the money on drugs, before they
even got into the studio. When they finally started making the record,
they had to fire the producer halfway, since they couldn't afford to pay
him
if he stayed on any longer. With the producer gone, Dave Mustaine and the
band had to finish producing the album themselves. This is one of Dave's
early production efforts, and it shows. The sound quality was bad and the
mixing was terrible, finally leaving what we now know as "Killing Is My
Business... And Business Is Good!". So, it's the band's fault the blew
the money on drugs, but not their fault that they were such bad producers.
(Sorry guys!) But, in their defense it *was* one of their first times.
:)
Question: If "Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!" was so
badly produced, why doesn't Megadeth want to re-release it?
Answer: The band would like to re-release the album but their label
mates at the time managed to screw them over and Dave, nor the other members
of the band, want to give Combat Records anymore money than they have to.
Question: Is it true that "Killing Is My Business... And Business Is
Good!" was released with an earlier version containing an "extra" song?
Answer: Yes, this is true. The first version of "Killing Is My Business...And
Business Is Good!" was released with an "extra" song, "These Boots" by
Nancy Sinatra. However, Nancy and the song's other authors were not Happy
and wanted to take even more money/royalties. To avoid a lawsuit and being
charged even more than they already were, the band took the song off and
re-released the album.
Question: Is it true that Mechanix and Metallica's the 4 Horsemen are
the same song but with different lyrics?
Answer: Yup. The only difference is that, Megadeth sped their version
up about a 1000mph and used the original lyrics.
Question: What other songs did Dave write when he was with Metallica?
Answer: Metal Militia, Phantom Lord and Jump In the Fire off the Kill'em
All album and supposedly, he has written a few more songs that were used
on later Metallica albums but never recieved any credit for them.
Question: Is the guitar solo in Mechanix the same as The Four Horsemen
which appeared on Metallica's Kill'em All?
Answer: No, it was not the same. In fact, Hammet was told to play the
first few bars of Dave's solo and then do something different.
Question: Did Dave write anymore songs that he didn't get credit for?
Answer: No, he actually recieved credit for "Ride the Lightning" and
"Call of Ktulu" from Metallica's '84 album Ride the Lightning. He later
used the same four chords from Call of Ktulu in the intro to Hangar 18.
Question: What is Kerry King's (of Slayer) connection to Megadeth?
Answer: Kerry King (of Slayer) played with Megadeth when the band was
still in early stages, around 1984. Also, Megadeth toured with Slayer a
few years back.
7-C: So Far, So Good...So What?
Question: What song clip is sung in the beginning of Set the World Afire?
Answer: The clip is from a country group called the "Statler Brothers"
and the song they are singing is called "I don't want to set the world
on fire".
Question: What is the PMRC and what do they stand for?
Answer: The PMRC (Parent's Music Resource Center) was started in the
mid-eighties by Tipper Gore, wife of Al Gore. She was bitching about music
being "too nasty", and decided to start a censorship crusade. She is the
one responsible for all the "Parental Advisory" stickers. Bands like Testament,
Overkill, and Megadeth figured a way around it for a bit. Peace Sells was
supposed to have a parental advisory on it, as was Testament's The Legacy.
Question: Who is Tipper Gore?
Answer: Tipper Gore is the wife of the vice president of America. She,
unlike her husband Al, is very conservative and would like to be able to
tell the rest of America what they should/should not be able to listen
to. That's where the Parental Advisory stickers come in. As explained before,
she formed a group know as the PMRC and tried to get albums banned among
other things. Read the previous question to find out more about the PMRC.
Question: Who is Reverend Jerry Falwell
Answer: I don't have any specifics on him, asides from being a Reverend
but he teamed up with Tipper Gore and the PMRC team.
Question: Didn't the So Far, So Good, So What album have a different
name?
Answer: Yes, it did at first. Jeff Young (guitarist) wanted to call
the album "No Warning".
Question: On, SFSGSW, there's a cover of the Sex Pistols song "Anarchy
in the UK", I heard that Steve Jones (guitarist for the Sex Pistols) played
on it. Is that true?
Answer: Sure is true. Read the credits and you'll see his name.
Question: Was Anarchy In the UK the first choice for a cover song for
the SFSGSW album?
Answer: Nope, it wasn't Dave's first choice. Dave wanted to record "Problems"
but was told that the song was too negative and that Anarchy would be a
better choice. Dave responded with "and that's a wonderful flower-growing
song?".
Question: Did it end there?
Answer: Nope, Dave decided to combine the 2 songs calling it "Anarchy...The
Problem Is You". That didn't exactly work out and "Anarchy In the UK" was
done instead.
Question: You mean a *real* Sex Pistol' member *really* played on "Anarchy
In The U.K." on the "So Far, So Good... So What!" album?
Answer: Yes, Steve Jones, guitarist for the Sex Pistols played on the
song. As Dave once put it (on the "Rusted Pieces" home video), "He wanted
$100 and some suction, so we gave him $1000 and a phonebook and told him
to get his own." Also, Steve's name appears in the credits of the liner
notes.
Question: Did K-Mart ban "So Far, So Good...So What!"?
Answer: Yes, for the phrase "cunt-like tendencies" in the lyrics of
the song "Anarchy In the U.K."
7-D: Rust In Peace
Question: What DO those special messages for Japan on the Hanger 18 singles
say anyways?
Answer: The message on the Hanger 18 single talks about their views
on the supposed military base called Hanger 18 with is supposed to contain
aliens. The other has a brief apology over what they said (in Japanese)
on the last message
Question: Does Dave ever use that Jackson double neck King V guitar
that he played on the Rust In Peace Tour/Holy Wars video?
Answer: No, Dave used that guitar for the RIP tour but stopped playing
it live because it was really heavy.
7-E: Countdown To Extinction
Question: Did MTV have a problem with some of the songs on "Countdown To
Extinction"?
Answer: They sure did. MTV didn't like the lyrics to "Skin O' My Teeth"
because they felt that the band was promoting suicide. And they didn't
like the video for "Symphony Of Destruction" because of an assassination
scene (the video deals with a corrupt President) that they felt was "too
harsh". Dave's response?: "We said, 'You know what, the video registers
good in our hearts, and we feel we've done the best job we can do. Whatever
you need to do to it in order to get the point across to kids out there
that we're being led down a one-way street off a cliff by the people that
are ruling this country right now, go ahead.' I think it's more important
that our point got across than the fact of whether or not we had to soften
up a certain scene or lose it altogether."
Question: Who is the women's voice on the song Countdown to Extinction?
Answer: Maybe you can tell us.
Question: Who is the speaking voice on Captive Honour?
Answer: It's Nick's voice "LIFE, what do you mean life, I ain't got
a life"
Question: In the beginning of Symphony Of Destruction, just before the
band kicks in, what does the choir sing?
Answer: It's probably something in Latan or Italian but so far others
have been able to listen to it closely and make out the words "Silence".
Question: Where is New World Order and Crown of Worms from?
Answer: Both songs are left overs from the Countdown recording sessions.
They never made it past the demo stage but when Megadeth, Arizona was up,
the band decided to put those songs on the web site and make them available
to the public for the first time. The responce was so good, they decided
to put them on the cd singles for A Toute Le Monde and Train of Consequences.
Crown of Worms, as reported by Dave M. at the time, was going to be a hidden
track on the next album, Needles And Pins, which is due out in 1997 but
the band has decided against that and the song has been pulled from the
track list.
New World Order was written originally for another band, Zeofate. However,
Zeofate never made use of the song, so Megadeth recorded a demo of it.
It's extra demo from the Countdown to Extinction recordings and was first
made available on the A Tout Le Monde promo.
Question: What's the deal with the Megabox? What exactly is it?
Answer: Well, Megadeth released a package, which is similiar to Metallica's
Live Shit: Binge and Purge, just without the video's and. It was ONLY released
in Japan but some import stores in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. have it.
It has 5 CD singles and you can check the track listing in the releases
singles section of this faq.
Question: Wasn't there a Megadeth game of sort released a while ago?
Answer: Yes there was. This was released after Countdown To Extinction
and Dave admits that it was a marketting ploy just to get their singles
higher spots in the charts. I believe this was only released fully in the
UK but you could probably pick it up in an import store somewhere. The
packaging was a 10" box, which I may be able to get a picture of eventually.
Here's an explanation of the game and how it works.
1.How to play; the game is designed with a board similar to a Monopoly
board. There are 50 spaces. On just about every space, it tells you either
to take one of a variety of cards ( Guest Pass, Photo Pass, Press Release,
Crew Pass, and Access All Areas ) or it tells you to go backwards or forewards
several spaces, and gives some reason for the move -- "23 Hour Drive To
Next Gig; Back 2", or "Meet Fans At Instore; Forward 5" for example. A
few spaces are the "Blag A Pass" spaces. If you land on one such space,
you then spin the Pass Disc to see which pass you should take. The idea,
as I see it, is to get to the last space of the board, the Hotel, with
a certain variety of cards; either an Access All Areas card or a Photo
Pass AND a Crew Pass AND a Guest Pass. If you either do not have the correct
passes or you do not land directly on the space, you continue around the
board. In the corners, there are areas similar to Jail in Monopoly, or
the Hospital in Careers; the Photo Pit, the Catering Tent, and the Backstage
Area. If you land on these spaces or are told to go to one of them by the
instructions on a space ( like "Go Directly To Jail; Do Not Pass GO, Do
Not Collect $200" from Monopoly ) you must use one of these passes to get
out; the Guest Pass gets you out of the Catering Tent, the Crew Pass gets
you out of the Backstage Area, and the Photo Pass gets you out of the (
guess what... ) Photo Pit -- or an Access All Areas will get you out of
any of them. If you do not have cards, you can also get out by spinning
a 6 on the spin disc. If you spin a 6, you then spin the spin disc again
to find out how far you should move. Or, if the spinner lands on Blag A
Pass, you spin the Pass Disc. If you get a relevant pass this way, you
then spin the Spin Disc. Or if it tells you to take a Press Release, you
do that and then follow whatever instructions it has on it instead of spinning
the Spin Disc. Also, the player with the longest hair or the largest Megadeth
collection ( me of course ) goes first, and then the the Spin Disc goes
around clockwise. I think that just about explains it.
2.Cool Info; I'll type the different cards separately with a space between
them so that you can see where one card stops and the next starts. This
information is provided on the Press Release cards. Anything in brackets
is a note from me, and is not from the Press Release card. Note that the
instructions below the info are usually pertinent to how cool/uncool the
tidbit is. here we go:

Question: What's Megadeth's connection to Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznor?
Answer: Trent Reznor remixed "Symphony Of Destruction" off the "Countdown
To Extinction" album. The remix is called "Symphony Of Destruction [Extended
Gristle Mix]". There is a video for this song with this mix on the "Exposure
Of A Dream" home video.
Question: What is the Gristle Mix and the Holy Wars Schwarzkopf Mix?
Answer: The Gristle Mix, or Gristle Edit is when Trent Reznor took a
bunch of Megadeth songs and put a whole bunch of really weird sounds in
them. It's in the usual Trent Reznor style of "what in the world did he
think up now?" There is also a video for Symphony of Destruction with this
edit.
Answer: The Holy Wars Schwarzkopf Mix was remixed by Sascha Koneitzko
of KMFDM
Question: What songs have this special mix?
Answer: Symphony Of Destruction. Trent uses one of the riffs from Take
No prisoners in this remix too.
Question: How long are the 2 versions of the Gristle Mix.
Answer: The edited version is about 4 minutes and there is a video for
it. The extended version is 9:50 minutes.
Question: I heard there were 2 different pressings of Countdown To Extinction
in the U.S. What are the changes?
Answer:There were 2 different versions released. The big difference
was in the way Vic looked on the CD. On one version, there is a photonegative
of Vic on the cd. So, he looks kinda grey-ish. On the other version, Vic
is plain black and looks like he has a robe on.
7-F: Youthanasia
Question: What is the "Baby Face CD"?
Answer: The Baby Face CD was a promotional album that was given to Mike
Graben, by Capitol records (I think 230 copies) and Mike had a contest
where people could win them.
Question: What does the number on the "Baby Face CD" mean?
Answer: We don't know at this time but it's a damn good question. It's
probably a cd model number to keep track of how many were printed.
Question: Why was A toute Le Monde banned from MTV and Much Music?
Answer: ATLEM was banned because it dealt with suicide and MTV said
that Megadeth was promoting it. Much Music never releases specifics but
they're reason for banning it was because "inappropriate" for the viewer
or some crap like that.
Question: What is Dave saying in the song A Toute Le Monde?
Answer: First off, Dave is speaking French and here is the loose translation:
A Tout Le Monde -- To Everyone A Tout Mes Amis -- To All My Friends Je
Vous Aime -- I Love You ( all ) Je Dois Partir -- I Have To Leave (Or I
must leave)
Question: Who are the woman and child that appear in the video?
Answer: That is Dave's wife Pam and his son, Justis.
Question: Was there a video for Reckoning day?
Answer: Apparently there was but as usual, MTV banned that one too and
so did Much Music.
Question: What is the deal with the "Youthanasia" cover?
Answer: Straight from Dave himself: "Kids have been hung out to dry
in this society. It's a fact. As soon as kids show autonomy, some parents
are right there to clip it off."
Question: Who did the cover art for the album?
Answer: Hugh Syme did the artwork. He's done a majority of Rush' CD's
and his most recent project was the new Iron Maiden album. (Check out his
work on it, it's so gory, I love it) No, babies weren't really hung upside
down, it's all computer generated graphics, although the babies used were
real. You can check out how they did it in the Evolver video.
Question: Those "Youthanasia" pictures, like the one on the CD itself,
are totally different than Megadeth's other CD pictures. Who took the pictures
this time?
Answer: The pictures, like the one on the actual CD, were taken by world-
renowned photographer Richard Avedon. He is mostly known for photographing
the Beatles.
Question: I heard there were 2 different pressings of Youthanasia in
the U.S. Like, the songs were the same but the cover work was different.
Answer: There is more than one version of artwork on the Youth cd. If
you bought the CD right when it came out, the title is listed only on the
side and the Megadeth logo is medium-sized on the top. The picture for
Killing Road takes up the entire page. The other version: On the bottom
of the cover it says "Youthanasia" in yellow lettering and the Megadeth
logo is quite large. The picture for Killing Road takes up only half of
its page.
Question: Any difference in the lyrics?
Answer: There is actually. The only one that I know of, is during Black
Curtains. There is a section where Dave sort of whispers a phrase (see
the next question to find out what he says). In one Version, those lyrics
are not printed, in another, they are.
Question: In Black Curtains, just before the solo, what is Dave saying?
Answer: Dave says "Somethings under my skin. Somethings very strange.
Playing with my mind/Tempting me to do you in
Question: At the beginning of some songs (Train of Consequences), and
in concert, I hear Nick or Dave saying "Ein, Twei, Zeir, Feir". What does
that mean?
Answer: They're starting off the song by counting to 4 in German. "1,
2, 3, 4"
Question: Didn't Megadeth set up some sort of food drive on the Youthanamerica
tour?
Answer: They did and it was such a cool idea. Here are the main details.
MEGADETH'S "FEED THE HUNGRY" FOOD DRIVE
Megadeth is instituting a Food Drive at each of their concerts. The
first 200 of you who bring ten (10) pounds of canned food, along with your
ticket to the event, will be presented with a special pass. This pass will
allow you to stay after the show, and approximately 15 minutes later, Megadeth
will meet and greet each one of you. Help Megadeth feed the hungry!
Question: Any cool promotional events during this album? (Asides from
the food drive)
Answer: There was. Megadeth was one of the first bands to ever put their
tour on the internet. The band, Capitol Records, John Dumas and Rob (Sorry,
can't remember his last name) created the web site, Megadeth, Arizona.
Your probably asking yourself, what in the world is Megadeth, Arizona and
where is it?
You're probably wondering "what in the hell is Megadeth, Arizona?" We
figure you'll guess it's about the band Megadeth, and it's something to
do with the Halloween release of their new album, but what's up with the
Arizona part?
Here's the story:
To record Youthanasia, Megadeth packed up and moved to Arizona where
they built a unique recording studio in a warehouse on the outskirts of
Phoenix. When they were finished recording, the studio was split in two
pieces and trucked back to Los Angeles. This ftp/web site is a celebration
of their time in what we call Megadeth, Arizona.
Come here only to have fun. Just one word of advice, act fast because
this town will be changing before your very eyes.
If you get a chance, please shoot us an e-mail telling us what you think
of the programs we have provided for you here, also if you do so, we will
be picking e-mails out of a hat and sending people free gifts, just for
visiting.
7-G: Needles And Pins
Question: So what information do you have on the new album?
Answer: The name is going to be "Needles And Pins". The album, according
to Dave, is to be expected in early 1997, either April or May or around
there. The band expects to be out of the studio before Christmas. Six songs
are done so far; the rest are currently being remixed. According to Dave,
the album sounds like a cross between "Rust In Peace", and "Peace Sells...
But Who's Buying?". People who have heard the album have both agreed and
disagreed on this, so we're going to have to wait for the album to be released
to decide for ourselves. For the most part, everyone agreed that it sounds
like no other Megadeth album previously released, saying that it is very
melodic but heavy at the same time. Expect two songs to be MTV-oriented
(so the album can gain MTV coverage; hence more exposure for the album
and thus higher sales), and the rest will be heavy. Apparently, there will
be no ballad-like songs on the album.
Question: Do you have a semi-official tracklisting for the new album?
Answer: Here's what little information about the tracks we have:
-
"FFF" which stands for "Fight For Freedom" (originally called "Bullprick",
as well as "Labratz"). If you want to hear this song, the "Evolver" home
video (documenting the making of the "Youthanasia" album has this song
as the warm up song.)
-
"Vortex", the riff in this song is also in the "Evolver" home video.
-
"The Evil Within", containing a "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?" type
bassline.
-
"Mastermind", which Dave says sounds alot like "Bad Omen" off of the "Peace
Sells... But Who's Buying?" album.
-
"Atomic Destruction", which Dave says sounds like some parts of "Holy Wars...
The Punishment Due" off of the "Rust In Peace" album.
-
"Bite Of the Shewolf" (tentative title)
-
"Trust"
-
"Sin"
-
"The Disintegrators"
-
"Have Cool/Will Travel"
-
"My Secret Place"
-
"Smoking Gun"
-
"Almost Honest"
*Update, here is the official track listing:
-
The Disintegrators (was Atomic Destruction)
-
Mastermind
-
Have Cool, Will Travel
-
Vortex
-
Sin (was The Evil Within)
-
Trust
-
Almost Honest
-
Use the Man
-
I'll Get Even
-
FFF
-
One Thing
-
She-Wolf
-
A Secret Place
Question: So how about some song details, I noticed that there's a difference
in some of the tracks.
Answer: Sure, here is what I know right now. Smoking Gun was never finished
and won't make the CD. Another thing...one of these songs, which is undecided,
will only appear on the European/Japanese version. The reason for this
is that they are releasing what they're paid for here in the States. So,
the un-released song on the U.S. version of a single or look for it in
the import section.
Question: Any other details I can drool over for a bit?
Answer: There's still no official release date which sucks but oh well
at least the album is done. The only thing that is left is to master and
manufacture the album which will be started on Monday, January 19th, 1997.
As for the music, Dave says there's 4 radio friendly songs, 4 'heavy as
fuck' Megadeth songs and 4 kinda "crossover/metal/radio" songs.
Question: So where is the new album being recorded/produced?
Answer: Megadeth is not in Arizona making the new album. The new album
is being recorded in Nashville, Tennessee.
Question: So who is the producer?
Answer: The producer will *NOT* be Max Norman. We don't know why Max
isn't producing the new album, seeing as how he seemed to jell with the
band pretty well over the last few albums, but we digress. The new producer
will be Dan Huff instead of Max Norman.
Question: Who Has Dan Huff Worked with?
Answer: Dan Huff has produced a few Anthrax CD's.
Question: Will it have that hidden song (Crown of Worms) on it like
Dave promised?
Answer: Sorry. Dave promised that "Crown Of Worms" would appear as a
hidden, thirteenth track on the album. Apparently, plans have fallen through
for this and the track has been taken off the album.
Question: What's the cover going to be like?
Answer: No one really knows yet, but Dave said that he has been talking
to the guy that did the cover art for "Youthanasia" and "Countdown To Extinction",
so don't expect Vic Rattlehead to be on the cover, as he wasn't on either
"Youthanasia" or "Countdown To Extinction". As Dave says, it's not like
Vic's presence on the cover increases sales or anything. Some people have
phoned the Cyber Army Hotline (You need a membership to call that number)
and there is a recording from Dave talking about the cover. Here's a description
of it:
There will be this really fine (female) model naked with a bright light
behind her (so there won't be nudity). She'll be holding this voodoo doll
and sticking a syringe into it. There will also be all these pins in the
doll. Some will have skulls on the top, some with be like old and rusty.
Question: Any cool promotional stuff done yet?
Answer: Actually, there has been a rather large event that took place
just before the Christmas Holidays. The Fan Asylum, Megadeth's Official
Fan Club held a special meet and greet with the band and it's fans. Where
was this? In Nashville, where the album was recorded. The Fans that paid
$300 to go on this trip, got a chance to listen to the new album before
anyone else. So far, all the reviews have been VERY positive. Here are
the details of that trip.
FRIDAY, December 13th - a welcome gathering for all CyberSoldiers
SATURDAY, December 14th - the morning and afternoon will be yours to
explore Nashville. In the evening, it's over to the band's studio where
Dave, David, Marty and Nick will walk you through the studio and conduct
a seminar on the ins and outs of recording an album. Then the guys will
play some new material from the upcoming album.
SUNDAY, December 15th - it's lunch and some more hanging-out time with
the band at one of Nashville's hotspots. The evening will be yours to explore
more of what Nashville has to offer.
MONDAY, December 16th - time to head home!
We're taking sign-ups until Friday, November 22nd, but space is limited.
Cost is $295 per person based on double occupancy and includes 3 nights
hotel stay and transportation between hotel and studio. If you need help
with flight arrangements, call Cesar @ America's Travel at his toll free
number 888-703-9955. For more details email "cyndy@fanasylum.com"
Question: That sounds so awesome, are they going to do it again?
Answer: Apparently, there is something in the works for yet another
trip like this.
7-H: Other Questions:
Question: When and where were the guys in Megadeth born?
Answer: Dave: La Mesa, CA: 9/13/61 David: Jackson, MN: 11/12/64 Marty:
Washington, D.C.: 12/8/62 Nick: Munich, Germany: 7/23/64
Question: What religion were Dave's parents?
Answer: They were Jehova Witnesses
Question: How many nick names does David (Ellefson) have?
Answer: I know of 2 so far. He's known as Junior and as "Little" David.
Question: Why was Rob Graves (Ex-Tour manager) fired?
Answer: Rob was fired from his position because after a concert, Dave
saw Rob being rude to some fans. Dave fired him on the spot.
Question: Doesn't Marty have a guitar column with a guitar magazine?
Answer: Yes, Marty has a column with Guitar School. His first Column
appeared in the September 1992 edition and I believe he stopped writing
columns for them when Youthanasia began recording. I may be wrong on that.
Question: Who's voice is that on BreakPoint? and what is being said?
Answer: I think that's taken from the Mario Brother's Movie. Here is
what is being said:
In my opinion as a professional, I recomend we straight jacket the son
of a bitch, lock him in a rubber room, sedate him...heavily and when he
wakes up, If he wakes up, we'll see if he can be a nice boy. (music changes)
Sedate me, HA (unclear what he says next) A Straight Jacket? Hey, hey,
Let go! HEY HEY!! *mumbling* which sounds like "let go".
Question: How come foreign countries (outside the US and Canada) get
bonus tracks on THEIR versions olf the Megadeth CD's?!
Answer: The reason is simple. Other countries like Japan for example,
have strict tax laws and other government crap to deal with and that makes
it hard for the fans in those countries to get the albums.
Question: In "Toy Story" I'm pretty sure that, in the next-door-neighbour's
house (in the room of the kid who blows his toys up), by the window is
a poster of "Megadeath" (sic). You see it when Woody's talking to the toys
back in the other house.
Answer: Well, that's close. It's actually "Megadork" on the poster.
But I think we all know what they were going for. The rest of the poster
doesn't have anything to do with Megadeth, though. It's a guy with black
hair and sunglasses blaying a guitar, but it's far from being Marty.
Question: Have any of the members of the band been involved in producing
other bands' albums or begun their own side projects?
Answer: Sure have, here's an overview of the bands past activities besides
Megadeth.
David produced the Hellstar album "Multiples of Black". He has written
A book called "Making Music Your Business". He is also writing a second
book which is about all the places he has been to with Megadeth. The book
might be out in Febuary. He also writes a monthly column in the magazine
"Bass player". (Which you can go to at)
http://www.bassplayer.com/
Nick has been/was playing in the progressive rock/classic rock band
called "Soma".
Marty produced Phantom Blue's 1st album and played on 2nd album. The
second album was produced by Max Norman.
-
Marty had his humble beginnings as a solo musician before he joined Megadeth
in Febuary of 1990.
-
First, He was in a band called Aloha. They released the demo track "Heavy
Metal Virgin" and it appeared on a Metal Massacre II compilation in 1982.
-
Then, he was in a band called "Hawaii". According to a news paper review
of one of their albums "This band would be the next Judas Priest if it
wasn't for guitarist Marty Friedman's trippy lead playing." They released
3 albums: 1983 - Hawaii, "One Nation Underground" 1984 - Hawaii, "Loud
Wild and Heavy" 1985 - Hawaii, "The Natives are Restless"
-
After these bands, Marty began on a solo carreer. He had recorded his first
album when he was introduced to guitar prodigy Jason Becker. Marty was
so impresssed By Becker's playing, that he asked him, to play on his solo
cd. Becker agreed and along with Marty, formed the band Cacophany. Cacophany
put out 2 cd's, "Speed Metal Symphony" and "Go Off". Cacophany split up
and both guitarists went their seperate ways.
-
Jason went on a very succesful solo career and has released quite a number
of albums. Unforunatly, he has fallen prey to Lou Gheriks Disease. He has
a computer set up, which he uses to compose his albums now. People that
have heard his latest works are completely awe struck.
-
Marty released 1 more solo cd, Dragon's Kiss. Jason played on 2 songs and
Dean Castronova played Drums.
-
After this, Marty joined Megadeth in Febuary of 1990 and a couple years
later in 1992, released "Scenes." In 1994, another solo album "Introduction"
was released and 2 years later, in 1996, released "True Obsessions."
-
Nick Menza joined Marty to play drums on Scenes and Introductions.
-
Marty also played on an Ace Frehely Tribute album "Spacewalk - A Tribute
to Ace Frehley". He covered "Duece". It came out in 1996 and is on Triage
Records, Inc
-
1982 - Aloha, demo on Metal Massacre II
-
1983 - Hawaii, "One Nation Underground"
-
1984 - Hawaii, "Loud Wild and Heavy"
-
1985 - Hawaii, "The Natives are Restless"
-
1987 - Cacophony, "Speed Metal Symphony" (Shrapnel Records)
-
1988 - Cacophony, "Go Off!" (Shrapnel Records)
-
1989 - "Dragon's Kiss" (Shrapnel Records)
-
1992 - "Scenes" (Nick Menza on drums) (Shrapnel Records)
-
1994 - "Introduction" (Nick Menza on drums) (Shrapnel Records)
-
1996 - "True Obsessions" (Shrapnel Records)
-
1996 - "Spacewalk - A Tribute to Ace Frehley" (Triage Records, Inc)
-
He also has a number of video's out. One of his videos is called "Exotic
Metal Guitar"
Before Dave joined Metallica, he had another band called "Panic" and then

*During The breaktime between the last album and the new one (Needles and
Pins-1997) Dave wrote a few magazine articles for a Japanese Magazine.
The column was called "MegaVisions". here it is, in it's translated version.
Be warned, there's probably a ton of mistakes.
MEGAVISION Mustaine Journal Vol.1
From THE HO.NO.O. Mag. No.7
Text by: Dave Mustaine
Translated by: Keiji Nishihara
I think most of you saw MEGADETH in your own country JAPAN, some people
travelled to another countries and saw us there. I think someone who saw
us in other countries notice that we show much more to Japanese audience
than ordinally audience in other countries.
Because this is based on the fact that there is a special relationship
between MEGADETH and Japan for many years. And thanks for THE HO.NO.O mag.
I could get a privilege that I can show you another side of myself that
I've never show that to anyone.
We'll talk about politics, emotion, music, world of rock star, fan,
recording album, etc..everything on my mind. And of course, you'll have
a closely relationship to MEGADETH's new album.
By the way, first of all, I want to say thank you to everyone who came
to last MEGADETH's Japan tour. When the airplane that we took tookoff to
Germany from Narita airport, I felt really sad. And very that moment I
arrived to next land I felt there is a difference in the feelings that
respect other people.
With the help of my loving martial arts, I became noticing that Japanese
express the feeling of respect by a bow and listening to other people's
talk till it ends. But same thing can't apply to other countries. Someone
said that when I was most respected by other people was someone asked to
him waited for his finishing question, that's right.
But,I think everybody who lives and works in Japan is such kind of person.
I've been watching both of governments of JPN and USA behaving like kids
about trade war concerning punishment about US cars and parts. Of course
on the other hands, I've been watching Japan and USA worked as an equal
partner in case some dangerous situations, especially Gulf War US airforce's
combat airplanes that were used to win the war were helped by Japanese
technologies.
Anyway, about the concerning trade friction of car, there is an aspect
that US side made situations that they didn't sell and use US cars and
parts to Japanese dealers. The reason is apparent. If I was living in Japan,I
won't buy US cars that handle is on the other side. Such kind of thing
is absolutely simple thing?
So if US car companies want to sell more car, they move handle position
with their models. Then the more US car sell, the more sales of car parts
together.
For me, my car is much to me, if I have to change parts, I think I want
to use the parts that suitable for my car. In case of trouble, I don't
want it happens with substitute parts. It's apparent that I want the original
parts!
Japanese economic situation is far from reallity from the view of USA.
In Japan, young professionals who live in cities have to sellect buying
house or cars. Most of them don't have enough money to buy both of them.
But, in the USA, cars and house are thought to come to them when they succeed
in. Most of American people doesn't know about the situation in Japan,
because they are listening only the news that their loving nation tells
to them, till they experience the expensive life in another countries.
I know how precious that honour, noble, respect, tradition of house,
and such kind of things. Someday, I hope MEGADETH's fans in other countries
know that how beautiful country Japan is. And politicians who use icy words
grow up,too!

Question: So, what's the deal with the 2 names, Beverly Killbillies
and Mastermind?
Answer: Those were the first 2 names Dave was going to call his side
project. Although, Mastermind has already been taken, in fact, that group
has a few albums out. I don't know why Beverly Killbillies wasn't used.
Question: Have any bands ever covered a Megadeth song?
Answer: Yes, there have been a few bands. UK band TAIGERTAILZ (now WAZBONES)
covered "Peace Sells...but Who's Buying" on their "BANZAI" album. German
power metal band "RAGE" covered "Symphony of Destruction" in Kyoto, Japan.
Question: Are there any Megadeth TV performances?
Answer: Yes there are. They appeared on The Arsenio Hall show just after
Rust In Peace was released and performed "Hanger 18". They performed "Symphony
of Destruction" on the Arsenio Hall show after Countdown To Extinction.
Deth has performed on the Letterman show twice. The first time they
played "Train of Consequences" and the second time they played "A Toute
Le Monde".
They also appeared on the Jon Stewart show and performed "A Toute Le
Monde" as well.
They have also been mention on the "X-Files" (the episode about the
demon possesed teacher that kills her students etc...) I believe the line
used was "better hide your megadeth albums scully"
There was also a mention of them in the TV show "Mad About You". Other
appearances include:
-
Shocker - No More Mr Nice Guy (Alice Cooper cover)
-
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey - Go To Hell
-
Mario Bros - Breakpoint
-
Demon Knight (Tales From The Crypt) - Diadems
-
The Decline Of Western Civilization Pt. II; The Metal Years -- In My Darkest
Hour
-
Last Action Hero - Angry Again
-
Dudes - These Boots ( studio version II -- recorded in '87 I think )
-
Some movie from the 80's had My Last Words in it, but it didn't make it
onto the soundtrack
-
Numerous Guest spots on HeadBangers Ball and Much Music
-
CNN...They were briefly discussing the controversy over the Youthanasia
cover
-
American Music Awards -- I don't know what year but they have performed
there and have also had a "Rockumentary" made for them. It was shown during
the awards show.
-
Numberous celebrity softball games (Mostly Dave)
Question: Didn't Pink Floyd call them selves Megadeth at one point?
Answer: Yes and no. Pink Floyd USED to be called "The Megadeaths" and
then changed their name to Pink Floyd.
Question: What members of the band are married and when?
Answer: Dave was married to Pam (no date at the current time), David
was married to Juley Foley, (no date at the current time) Marty was married
to Laurie Sato (no date at the current time) and Nick isn't married.
Question: When was Megadeth's first headline tour?
Answer: I have no clue. Maybe someone can pass on that information to
me
Question: What drugs was Dave addicted to?
Answer: From a Guitar School magazine interview, Dave stated that when
recording "Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!" I was doing
pot [marijuana], coke [cocaine] and heroin. When recording "Peace Sells...But
Who's Buying?" I was doing speed, coke [cocaine] and heroin. When recording
"So Far, So Good... So What!" I was doing heroin and freebase and during
"Rust In Peace" he was addicted to cigarettes. In Spin magazine, Dave said,
"I used to have a music stand in front of my mic stand when I was recording
vocals, and there was a line of dope and a freebase pipe on it. It's a
miracle I'm still alive, really."
Question: Is Dave totally clean now?
Answer: "Countdown To Extinction" was the first album where Dave recorded
totally clean from drugs. Although, during the CTE tour, he had a small
problem with valuim pills and at one point, almost overdosed on them. Luckily,
his wife found them and made Dave flush them down the toilet in the back
of the tour bus.
Question: What Anthrax song features a sample of Dave Mustaine taken
from a MTV interview?
Answer: "Who Put This Together" (from the Got The Time single) features
a sample of Dave saying "The youth of America wants to thrash right now,"
taken from MTV's Fast & Loud heavy metal special from 1987.
Question: Have any Megadeth albums been banned?
Answer: Sure, what good metal band doesn't have a few albums banned
from some countries :). Youthanasia was banned from Malaysia and Singapore.
Read the Article to find out why.
Album Cover Art Generates Controversy Around The Globe
Megadeth's new release Youthanasia has been banned in Malaysia and Singapore,
as officials there have deemed the cover artwork "defamatory." The controversial
visual--a computer generated digital image in a surreal neo realistic style--depicts
an elderly washerwoman hanging cherubic infants on a clothesline. Problems
have also occurred in Canada and Germany with major retailers not wanting
to stock the record, citing the cover as "offensive" and "not in good taste".
Megadeth's Dave Mustaine has refused to change the cover art. He says,
"Keeping our records off the shelves does not make the problem of our children
being hung out to dry disappear."

Question: What other kinds of Controversy has Megadeth gotten into?
Answer: Just about everything, even if they weren't physically (or geocraphically)
near a place on this planet, controversy still sparked. Read this article
from the Boston Globe (I have a picture of this too)
Moscow
It was a black T-Shirt with a racy logo silk screened on the front - hardly
proper attire for a 55-year-old legislator.
That's what Vyacheslav Marychev, a flamboyant conservative lawmaker
wore to work when the Russian State Duma reconvened after its summer vacation
last week. But what got everyone's attention was the word emblazoned in
English across the top of the shirt: MEGADETH.
In the Duma, the wild and wolly lower house of the Russian parliament,
this T-shirt was no less than a provocation. The house a rule banning the
use of any language but Russian, a regulation proposed earlier this year
by Marychev's ally, ultranationalist leader Vladimir Zherinovsky.
Minutes after the sessions began, a rival legislator stood up and demanded
that Marychev go home and change into something more acceptable.
Later, Marychev defended his clothing saying that prices in Russia are
so high that he can NOT afford the suit....

Other Stories:
At a show in Ireland in 1991, some guy was selling bootleg Megadeth t-shirts,
the profits of which went to benefit 'The Cause,' the IRA. Dave tried to
get the people from the venue to make him stop, but they wouldn't. So during
the concert, Dave made a comment about how much bullshit the whole IRA
thing is. Needless to say, many of the concert-goers were not fond of this
comment, and they got real angry at him. If you ever hear Dave talking
about a 'Particular Problem" with his "Big Mouth," or "Alligator Mouth,"
he is most likely refering to this incident.
Question: Will Megadeth ever release a live album?
Answer: Nope. Dave said the only time they would do that, is if they
ever broke up or if they had to fulfill a contract obligation.
Question: How come all the other countries of the world get the cool
bonus tracks on their versions of the Megadeth CD's
Answer: Because countries like Japan have expensive prices on imports.
So, they get more for their money by getting a few extra tracks.
Question: Have their been any funny incidents where it was all caught
on tape and pressed?
Answer: Yes, there just happen to be a few of them out there.
-
The most famous is during Paranoid. Nick thought they were going to extend
the song and as the rest of the band stopped, Nick kept on going. Dave
can be heard yelling "Nick, Nick, NICK!!" Nick says "Fuck me
-
At the end of Angry Again, you can hear Dave saying "Son of a bitch".
Question: Has any of the members ever forgotten any of the lyrics to songs
or just screwed up entirely?
Answer: I know of a few incidents where this has happened.
-
Hanger 18 single: (Live version) The lyrics went like this: Welcome to
our fortress tall" he's singing "Foreign life-forms inventoried..." At
this point, he seems to forget the rest of words and repeats the phrase
"Foreign life forms inventoried"
-
There are also a couple mistakes on the Europe 1993 live CD. In Sweating
Bullets, Dave says "Hello me, it's me again. You can subdue, but never
tame me. Thinkin' down to your level." He skips over "It gives me a migrane
headache." In the third verse, he misjudges his time and has to say "Well
me it's nice talkin' t' m'self" being hurried at the end.
-
In Ashes In Your Mouth, at the guitar part after the solos where there's
no bass and no drums, Dave and Marty are a little out of synch.
-
Milton Keynes Bowl show in 1993, they preformed Angry Again and during
the last chorus, Dave and Jr. are singing...
-
Engaged in crime I grasp my throat:
-
Enraged my mind starts to smoke:
-
Enforce a mental overload...
But Dave goes right from the first on to the third one, and then came back
to the second one after he got to 'mental' and realized that he was wrong
because with Jr. singing it wasn't too difficult to hear that something
was wrong.
Question: Does Nick really believe in Aliens?
Answer: He sure does. To quote Dave M in the Rusted Peices video: "something
said"
Question: Does the Hard Rock Cafe have any of Megadeths gear hanging
on their walls?
Answer: The one in Phoenix, Arizona has a guitar that Dave smashed apart.
I think it'd be funny if you put a guitar that Townsend smashed and the
guitar that Dave smashed, side by side and tried to guess who's guitars
was who :)
Question: What's Megadeth's connection to Aerosmith?
Answer: In August of 1993, Megadeth went on tour with Aerosmith on the
"Get A Grip" Tour. Dave came up on stage and began to talk to the audience.
He then took an aerosmith T-Shirt and blew his nose in it. I don't know
why he was so mad but the band was booted off of the tour.
Question: What's Dave's connection to MTV News?
Answer: Dave was a reporter for MTV News from the floor of the Democratic
Convention for the election in 1992. He did a great job, and when asked
about the end result, MTV Political Correspondent Tabitha Soren said, "He
performed as we expected him to-he's very opinionated, he's very articulate,
and he's very direct with people. When you're in a chaotic situation like
the Democratic National Convention, or interacting with the protests outside,
you have to be very quick on your feet.
Question: I heard Honda is using "I ain't Superstious" in their commercials,
is that true?
Answer: Yes, it's true.
Question: What is this I keep hearing about Megadeth handing out earplugs
to their fans at one of their shows?
Answer: Straight from Dave's mouth, "We didn't get really too involved
in the whole affair, other than just saying, 'It's cool to be able to have
the choice to protect your hearing or not', because some kids dig the band
so much, they'll get right next to the speaker, 'cos that's the only place
they have to see us up close. But when you stand close, it's like standing
next to a jumbo jet taking off and the decibel level can hurt your hearing.
In as much as I can understand why they would want to get close to see
us, I wouldn't subject my hearing to that kind of treatment for anybody!"
With that in mind, check out this web site if you want to know more
about your hearing. Anyone who enjoys concerts and cranking up the tunes
should know what risks they run. It isn't wimpy to wear earplugs, it's
just smart. (editors note)
Tinnitus Frequently Answered Questions
http://www.cccd.edu/faq/tinnitus.html
Question: I heard that Dave has his own line of clothing, is that true?
Answer: Believe it, he actually does. Dave and his brother-in-law started
this company back in mid-1996 and Mike Graben, is in charge of their official
web site. The company is located in San Diego, CA and is called Melting
Pot International Inc. Check out:
http://www.meltingpotintl.com
Question: Is it true that I can get a Free Dave Mustaine Poster?
Answer: Yes and no. A while ago, D'Addario ran a series of adds that
had a cool picture of Dave with his guitar and a quote of him saying "You
can't get my sound unless you get my strings". On the bottom of that, it
said, for a free poster, write too .....Someone actually did mail them
and recieved a free poster of Dave and 3 other posters of some other people.
So, people began to write into the company. One slight problem arose, the
ads, were meant for stores that carry their products, not for regular people
like you and me. So, they pulled the add and took out the "For a free poster"
part and put it back in. I haven't seen the new ad yet because I don't
read those guitar magazines anymore (waste of cash since they all suck
now anyways). You can TRY to email them and ask to send you a poster:
strings@daddario.com
Question: I heard that Megadeth had some trading cards out a couple
years ago, what were they?
Answer: Back in 1991, there was a product called "Rock Cards" and they
had pictures of different rock stars on them. They only have the 3 of the
4 members (Dave, David and Nick). Here's what each card said:
Dave Mustaine
-
Specialty: Vocals/Guitar
-
Birthday: September 13
-
First band: Panic
Profile: "Dangerous" Dave Mustaine has lived an unusual life. He formed
his first band in 1979. From there he became a member of the original Metallica,
departing in 1983. He then formed Megadeth with bassist David Ellefson,
and has emerged as the most charismatic personality on the trash (sic)
metal scene. The "General" says Michael Schenker was a major influence
and Diamond Head is his favorite band.
David Ellefson
-
Specialty: Bass Guitar/Back-up vocals
-
Birthday: November 12
-
First band: Killers
Profile: Minneapolis native David Ellefson met Dave Mustaine in early 1983
when Dave Mustaine threw a potted plant through his apartment window. The
pair soon put out Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good in 1985.
Since Megadeth's beginning, the Dave and David partnership has remained
constant. He admits he really can't stand "spineless worms" (you know who
you are).
Nick Menza
-
Specialty: Drums/Back-up vocals
-
Birthday: July 23
-
Interests: Motocross and scuba diving
Profile: Nick Menza is one of Megadeth's newest members, joining the group
just prior to the recording of their latest album, Rust In Peace. Nick
is a native of Hollywood and grew up around music. His dad was a famous
jazz musician which gave Nick the opportunity to study with top jazz drummers,
including Jeff Pocaro. Nick says he can't decide whether he's more against
the killing of dolphins or New Kids On The Block.
Question: What's the MegaPrayer?
Answer: The MegaPrayer is something that was written shortly after Christmas
by a friend. I thought it was funny and I figured I'd put it in the FAQ.
The Megaprayer
-
Our father David, who art in Arizona

Hallowed be thy band

Thy music come, thy will be done

On tour as it is in the studio

Give us this day our daily noise

And forgive us listening to sucky bands, as we forgive them for making
albums
-
Lead us not into temptation, we'll find it ourselves

8-E: The Megadiner
The Megadiner has been re-opened at
themob.com port 6969
You need a telnet program to go there. If you can't get one, try irc
and ask some people around there. (Yea, telnet is old technology but we
didn't create the site) There is NO word if the band will come back. Mike
Graben, maintainer of the diner and official web page, asked Dave if he
was going to come back but it seems that Dave just can't take the time
away to do the chat room thing. No word on the rest of the band though.

Back to the FAQ List

9-A: Who wrote the FAQ?
The FAQ was written and compiled by Mark Smeets, Jason Keiss, Mike Graben,
and Steve Weiss, as well as a ton others from the newsgroup alt.music.rock-n-roll.metal.megadeth.
Layout and everything else in this FAQ in the way it has been presented
has been put together by Mark Smeets.
9-B: Who contributed the FAQ?
The first two people I need to thank the most are Mike Graben (Ratlhead)
and Jason Keiss (Drulz). They first started up the Megadeth FAQ but just
couldn't find time to finish it or work on it soon after. They were nice
enough to let me help them work on the this and even though we both had
our differences, it's all worked out in the end. Thanks to the members
of Megadeth for giving us the years of enjoyment through their music. Dave,
David, Marty, Nick, thanks for giving us all this information. The most
anyone can say is thank you but to go further we made this for the band.
Thanks to all who have been on the Megadeth Mailing list: The Rattler for
the past 2.5 years (as of November 2nd/1996). Thank you to all of those
that have given information, tried to lend a hand and have bitched about
the length of time it's taken to get this FAQ out. If it wasn't for you
guys whining and raising some hell with some of us, there probably still
wouldn't be a FAQ.
Individual shout outs go to (in no particular order):
-
Chris Teal, my long time bud who has given some much information that it
makes the CIA look like a bunch of 1st graders.
-
Jon, thanks for that huge bootleg list, damn that's alot of stuff to put
down.
-
Jeremy Hyde, thanks for letting me bug the hell out of you on the jam :)
Muchos appreciated :) Win95 sucks, long live OS/2 (inside joke)
-
A big thanks to everyone on the Dream Theater mailing list: The YtseJam
and the IRC Jammers: You guys FUCKING RULE!!!!
-
Joe Olivas, Thanx for all the info and even though we don't always see
eye to eye, it makes for some damn funny conversations.
-
Jeff Taylor: There's alot of info I have from you, thanx for sharing.
9-C: Where can I find the FAQ on the World Wide Web?
The Megadeth FAQ is far from being complete, although it's a good start.
You can visit the WWW version of this FAQ at:
http://www.smartt.com/~jsmeets/stranger/FRONT.HTM
Note: If you do make a link, make sure the FRONT.HTM IS in caps.
Due to a win95 screw up, I have to keep the file names in caps. It's way
too much work to change everything online constantly.
9-D: Where can I find the FAQ on UseNET?
You can request the FAQ on UseNET on the various metal oriented newsgroups
alt.rock-n-roll.metal.megadeth
alt.rock-n-roll.metal.heavy
alt.rock-n-roll.metal
9-E: How often will it be posted?
It will be posted once every 3 weeks to a month, depending on when I get
time to edit it.
9-F: What version of the FAQ am I reading right now?
Currently, you are reading The Official MegaFAQ: Version 1.0
