You Never Know: Chapter 3 | |||||
**Two hours later...** *ring ring* The phone rang, waking Angel up. She looked at her clock. It read 2:36 PM. *ring ring* "I'm coming, I'm coming," she grumbled as she slowly made her way to the phone. "Hello?" she asked, her voice hoarse from all the crying. "Angel?" Melissa asked. "Yeah. Hi Mel," Angel said unhappily. "Oh my God Angel, what's wrong?" Melissa asked anxiously. "I called Brendan and overheard him telling my former best friend Kaylyn, who by the way lied to me and told me she couldn't come shopping with us because she had to babysit, to come back to bed. Needless to say, I went psycho on him and broke up with him," Angel said slowly. "Oh my God Angel! I'm so sorry! Want me to get Caitlin and come over for an emergency cheer-up party before we go to the concert?" Melissa asked. "I don't want to go to the concert," Angel whined. "What are you gonna do Angel, stay home and mope? All that's gonna do is show Brendan that he still has power over you. What you need to do is go to the concert and have a great time, then tell everyone about how awesome it was. That'll show Brendan that you're over him and don't care anymore," Melissa said enthusiastically, trying to cheer Angel up. "But I'm not over him," Angel whimpered. "So? Does he have to know that? I mean, c'mon Angel, what did you tell me after Steve dumped me for that junior?" Melissa prompted. "Never let them know you're down. Always get up and keep fighting. Always pretend to be happier than you actually are until you're over them," Angel said, smiling slightly as she remembered the way they'd pigged out on chocolate ice cream after Melissa and Steve broke up. Melissa could always find a way to make her smile, she was the comic relief of the group. "Bingo! Now get your ass in gear and get ready for the concert! Cait and I already have our stuff together. You're driving us, remember?" Melissa asked. Angel smiled at the mention of her Explorer. Her parents had given it to her on her sixteenth birthday on the condition that she paid for half of the cost. It had been worth it. She loved her Explorer and had been the envy of the sophomore class when she drove it to school the day after she got her license. "Yeah, I'll pick you up in an hour and a half, okay?" "Cool. I'll call Cait and let her know what's up. This concert is gonna be da bomb diggity!" Melissa squealed. "Come again?" Angel asked, not understanding what was said. "This concert's gonna be awesome!" Melissa translated. "Oh, yeah," Angel said. "I better go get ready, okay Mel?" "Yeah, latz Angel!" Melissa said. "Bye!" Angel hung up and headed for the shower. She stood in front of her closet and tried to decide what to wear. She stood for a good twenty minutes before she finally grabbed her favorite dark blue jean flares, and a white tank top with a blue short-sleeved, button-down Gap shirt over top. She left it unbuttoned and began searching through her jewelry box. She grabbed her favorite necklace, a silver chain with a dancer charm her sister Katie had given her before she left for college at Stanford. Katie was the only one who knew of Angel's ambition to become a professional singer or dancer, so they were the only ones who knew the true meaning behind the charm. She put a pair of heart-shaped rose quartz earrings and her six favorite rings. She had a plain silver thumbring, a silver band with alternating rubies and austrian crystal on her left hand, and a silver thumbring made of interconnected hearts, a silver ring with a small, rectangular piece of jade in the center, a gold ring with a small ruby in the center, and a silver ring with an oval piece of mother of pearl on her right hand. She put her black WWJD bracelet and her silver ID bracelet on her left wrist. She clipped her pager to her left jean pocket and put her StarTac phone in her purse, along with money, her wallet, and some gum. She jotted down a note to her parents about when she'd be home, grabbed her car keys, and headed out the door. She started the Explorer and drove off to Melissa's. *honk* Angel honked the horn as she pulled up at Melissa's house. "Hey Angel!" Melissa called, running down the steps wearing khaki capris and a red babydoll top. "Hey Mel!" Angel greeted as Melissa climbed into the passenger side. "Shotgun chooses CD," she told her. "Backstreet Boys!" Melissa yelled, and grabbed their Millenium CD out her purse. She put it in and skipped to track four. 'It's Gotta Be You' started blaring from the car speakers. Angel grinned and drove towards Caitlin's. Caitlin came running out the door as soon as Angel pulled up. "Hey chicas!" Caitlin said as she climbed into the back seat. "Ready for the concert Cait?" Melissa shouted over the music as Angel drove towards the freeway. "You better believe it!" Caitlin squealed. "They're never gonna know what hit them!" Melissa said, smiling. Angel laughed and continued driving. They reached the Coliseum about twenty minutes later. Angel parked her Explorer close to the back entrance, so it would be a short walk, and easy to reach after the concert. The three of them stepped out and slung their purses over their shoulders, then walked towards the arena. |
