GETTIN' DOWN WITH 5IVE!
Here is yet again another cool interview from the super cool mag Smash hits! It's been a hectic year of frenzied fans and tiring tours. But between concerts with 'N Sync and popping home to see their mums, the boys from 5ive went back to the studio. Enjoy this interview I got from Smash hits mag.
SCOTT
Seems like you've done a lot of growing up over the past year or so.
There's a side to me that I neer thought would exist. I've had to deal with a lot of things that normal 18 year olds don't have to and it's changed me. I also have a greater sense of worth now. I used to think I was useless because of my dyslexia because I couldn't read or write very well. This job has given me a lot of confidence.
Looking back, what was the worst thing about the past year?
We had a rough time last summer when eeryone hated us. We got a lot of negativity just because we were shattered. We were working 18-hour days and it took its toll. So we let eeryone around us know we were unhappy and that worked against us. In the end, we demanded time-off and felt a lot better when we got back.
Can you relate to how much your fans love you?
The thing I can't understand is when they run after the tour van and it's just so obvious they won't catch up. We're pulling away and they just won't stop running. They're still going even when we're miles away, but you can see the hope in their eyes. We the the driver to slow down to let them catch up before zooming away again! It's a big mean, but so funny.
RICH
What's it really like being a pop star?
I know it seems very glamorous and it can be, especially at the MTV Europe Awards in Milan. But sometimes I get tired and I want to be able to go out and not be recognised. It is a lot of hard work but it's still wicked.
How are you going to celebrate the year 2000?
Do you know what, I might end up staying in! I don't get enough time to relax and just chill-out. So I like to stay in and watch TV. You know, hang out and play computer games.
Do you have to behave yourself when you go out?
No, because as soon as I'e had a fw fizzy pops I'm off! I went to a party in Germany with 'N Sync and Boyzone's Stephen Gately and I had a few too many and ended up on stage dancing. I was really going for it-I thought I was performing or something.
J
What's the scariest thing your fans have ever done to you?
This one girl tried to give us a live toad in a crisp packet! She said, "This is for you." We were like, "Where did you get that?" And she said, "I just saw it and thought of you." And we said, "We're leaving now because you're scaring us." Spooky chick!
What more do you want for 5ive?
Actually, I'd like us to get our due respect. When we were over to Milan for the MTV Awards, we performed and picked up an award. Yet in all the adverts for the show we weren't mentioned-not once!
Where are 5ive going to be in 2000?
I'd like us to eventually become household names and take this as big as we can. I've never done anything by half measures and I don't see why this should be any different.
ABS
Does it freak you out that fans seem to know where you are before you do?
It does actually. Sometimes we don't know and we ask them what we're doing tomorrow. And they travel so far to see us. We had a couple of English fans that once came all the way to Denmark.
What's the most surprising thing that's happened to you ovre the past year?
Probably losing contact with a couple of friends-they weren't real friends obviously, but I thought they were. Being in a band makes you realise who your friends really are.
It seems like only yesterday we were getting into the last single and now you're back with If Ya Gettin' Down and a new album. How do you deal with the hectic schedule?
We're used to it. We just live day to day and take life as it comes.
SEAN
Are you enjoying being a pop star?
It's got its good points but it's not as glamorous as you think. It can be good fun-you get to travel all over the world
Do you get recognised everywhere you go?
Yeah, it doesn't stop me doing anything though. I mean, if there was a little six-year-old around then I'd behave but I behave anyway when I'm out on the street. I don't do anything mad!
Do you find it strange being a poster pin-up?
It doesn't freak me out-it happens, doesn't it? I've got a little sister called Charlotte, she likes 5ive but she's not affected by it. I'm just Sean to her.
