Emulators
For DOS/Win95/98
They run rather slowly under WIN3.1
NOTE: Mame may be removing some games in it's next release, something about them not being PC games???
Description:
Ever wish you could play your favorite arcade game from the past? Well then you
are in luck. Emulators are programs that are made to simulate an arcade machine
on your computer and run games. Some emulators are stand-alone which means you
download one program and it only runs the game it was designed to run.
(The game is usually included in the file you download)
There are other programs that you can download that play many different games.
In cases like this the main program is downloaded and then you can select different
games to download to play. MAME is a good example of this. The main program
is downloaded and then you can download as of today over 1900 different arcade
games. These are older games like punch-out, tron, rolling thunder, bad dudes, rastan, shinobi, pong etc...
There are other emulators out there like ones for Nintendo, Sega, SuperNintendo,
TurboGraphix, Gameboy, NeoGeo, Game Gear... and the list goes on.
Pro's:
Almost all emulators are FREE! So you can get free fun games. Arcade games are
exactly like the arcade including sound, beta test screens(if you ever saw an
arcade game turned on a bunch of strange graphics come up before the game is
loaded) You even have to use the keyboard to simulate inserting coins in the
machine.
Con's:
This first of all runs better the faster your system is. I had a 486DX2 50Mhz
12meg/ram running mame and games like rastan were very slow but others like
pac-man ran just fine. It does take allot of work to set up the programs to work.
You have to fiddle with video options and sound options to get them to work right.
You will spend allot of time trying to get these to work BUT IT IS WELL WORTH THE
TIME!
Note: The games you download you should already own if not it is
unlawful to have them. The ISDA started pursuing this matter and are
trying to close down all the sights that distribute the actual games or what
are usually called ROMS.
Overall:
This is a great way to get games for free and once you get it set up and know
what directories to put the programs in you will be able to run the games with
your eye's closed. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT COME WITH THE
PROGRAM! This saves you valuable play time and explains in detail how to install the program
and games.
