Chapter Twenty-One

Thunk!

Scott woke up to a noise above his head, coming from Bob's bunk. He noticed the curtain that separated the bunk area from the driver's sleeping quarters was half open [which they never left open like that] and a small ray of moonlight shone through a crack in the door. [Bob forgot to close it]

Scott squinted his eyes and wondered what Bob was doing outside in the middle of night. Then he remembered who was out there. He swore silently to himself that if Bob tried to hit on Kel he'd beat the life out of him.

Scott decided to go check on Kel. If Bob had been out there and talking with her or doing anything at all that she'd be just falling asleep, if not awake.

Scott stepped out of bed, put on some sweatpants and a tshirt and crept slowly to the door of the bus, pushing it open gently, so as not to make any noise.

He looked around to the front of the bus at the tent. The door was only half zipped. He could see Kel's hair by the light of the moon. He walked slowly over to the small tent and peered inside the tent. To his surprise, Kel wasn't sleeping. In fact, she was sitting upright with her body in that same knees-at-the-chest position. She was staring at her feet, which were covered with gray St. John's Bay winter socks.

Kel noticed another figure in the doorway, only she knew who it was right away by the way he presented himself. The way he carried himself. "Hi Scott." Kel whispered. She was sad. She was thinking about Lauren and how she had left her standing right there. For all Kel knew she could've been kidnapped.

Scott unzipped the doorway and went over to where Kel was sitting. He sat next to her and put his arm around her shoulders. Kel leaned her head onto his shoulder. "What's wrong, Kel?" Scott asked with concern in his voice.

Kel didn't look at him. "My best friend probably hates me."

"Why?"

"I already told you. I took her sign to hold it for her and the next thing I know I'm backstage and she's standing there calling for me." Kel explained again.

"Screw her." Scott said.

Kel looked up at Scott. Scott smiled. "Relax, I'm just kidding."

Kel looked somewhat annoyed. "I'm serious, Scott."

Scott withdrew his hand and took Kel's in it. He was determined to keep her mind off her friend. "Would you like to dance?" Scott flashed a teethy grin. Kel giggled a little.

"Now? It's like three in the morning!" Kel giggled again.

"So what! Screw the time!" Scott said.

Kel stood up and Scott followed, although they had to crouch because of the height of the small tent. They exited the tent and went by the door of the bus which was still cracked open a little bit. Scott quietly shut the door and took Kel by the hand about three yards away from the bus.

Scott put his hands and arms around Kel's waist and Kel placed her arms around his neck and put her head on his shoulder. They slowly danced to the silent rhythm of the night, all alone under the bright moon. Then Scott broke the silence.

"Look in my eyes and let the moment begin..." Scott sang almost as a whisper. "You make me feel like I can do anything..." Kel smiled. "Don't Walk Away" was one of her favorites. "One look from you just sends my troubles away..." Kel lifted her head up off of Scott's shoulder and looked into his eyes. They stopped moving and just looked at each other. Kel never wanted this moment to end.

Slowly, gently, the two pairs of lips moved silently together, fulfilling a need they both had. The lips slowly locked and the two teens shared a moment that could only be had on a night like this, together with no one but each other.

With eyes closed, the two refused to end the kiss, drawing it out to make sure they didn't miss out on what could be the last they see of each other for a long time.

After awhile, knowing all good things have to come to an end, Kel pulled back in the embrace of a guy she had once only dreamed of. Now he was a reality.

"What is it about me Scott?" Kel asked with a questioning look.

"What about you?" Scott was confused.

"You have millions of girls in England, Canada, France, Switzerland, Australia, and all across Europe and Asia. Why me?"
