chapter twenty-eight

Kel layed on her bed in darkness that night. She recapped the day and the previous day's events and watned to cry. Had all that really happened to her? Yeah, it did. She couldn't believe she dumped Scott Moffatt. But, as she always said, friends come first, then guys. Kel was determined to forget about Scott. It wouldn't be easy.

At about 10:30pm that night, the phone rang Kel awake. She hurried to pick it up in order to stop the terrible noise in her ears; they were fresh from waking up. "Hello?" Kel said groggily.

"Kel? It's Lauren." Lauren's voice said from the other end of the phone.

"Lauren, I was sleeping." Kel said. She held a certain hostility towards Lauren, even though she didn't mean to.

"I'm sorry. Well, I just watned you to know that I'm over the Moffatts." Lauren said. She sounded sad.

"Okay wait a minute. I just dumped the cutest guy in the world because my best friend had a crush on him and now you don't; a few hours later?!" Kel yelled into the phone.

Lauren replied meekly. "Well..."

Kel was fully awake now and very upset. "I'll call you when I want to talk to you again." Kel said sternly and started to hang up. Just as she almost had the reciever down she heard a faint voice. "Kellyn...wait!" But Kel didn't wait. She hung up on her friend for the first time ever.

Kel felt bad but Lauren deserved it. What kind of friend was she when she could give her best friend an ultimatum like that!

Julie looked at her watch and then at the clock on her wall. They were set at the same time. Julie was waiting impatiently for Ashley to arrive. Secretly, Julie couldn't wait to see 98° and she really didn't know why Ashley was getting all worked up over some band Julie had never even heard of.

Just as Julie thought of how late they were gonig to be, Ahsley's mom's car pulled into Julie's driveway. Julie jumped off of the couch in her family room and opened the door. "I'm leaving!" Julie yelled to her mom who was upstairs.

"Have fun!" Mrs. Ryan yelled right in time to hear her daughter slam the front door.

Julie ran out to the car and climbed in the driver side back seat, next to her best friend who was beyond excited. The car crept out of the driveway and Ahsley begged her mom to go faster. Ashley's mom just smiled and drove at a normal speed.

Ashley was jittery and couldn't stop commenting on Clint's hair. Julie barely heard her friend as thoughts of 98° [especially Jeff] screamed in her head. She noticed Ashley had on a red t-shirt with a small decal she had made and printed off her computer on the chest. It was a picture of Clint. Julie couldn't help but laugh.

"You're really wearing that?" Julie giggled.

"Shut up! Yes I am!" Ashley said, protesting.

The two girls giggled and talked amongst themselves until finally they saw The Boston Centre. [Where the concert would be] There was already a bunch of fans swarmed around the doors. Ashley's mom slowed the car down just in time for the manager of the venue to open the doors to all the fans.

Julie could see lots and lots of 98° stickers, tshirts, temporary tatoos, etc. all over girls. It looked like Ashley was the only Moffatt fan.

But she wasn't. Once they got in and found their seats [9th row], Julie noticed that there were all kinds of Moffatt fans mixed in with the 98° fans. Julie smiled and noticed that the Moffatts were, in fact, rather attractive. Julie and Ahsley saw countless posters of the Moffatts and 98L. Julie couldn't help but laught at all the teenyboppers. It was rather amusing.

It was about two hours before finally the lights dimmed down and a single spotlight shone down on center stage. For 9th row, Julie thought, they could se the stage perfectly. Since the audience was slanted, the girls were right at eye level with the performers.

A tall Korean man came out on stage and was greeted with "Moffatts! Moffatts!" and "Ninety-Eight! Ninety-Eight!" The man smiled and leaned into the microphone. "Hi!" He said and some girls in the back screamed. The guy laughed and looked around the audience.

"Welcome! I'm Rick Valentine and I'm the manager here at The Boston Centre. Thank you for coming. As you know, we have scheduled 98° as the main act tonight. However..." Rick Valentine said.

"Jeff Timmons, Justin Jeffre, and Nick Lachey all have a bad case of..." Rick paused. A hush fell over the crowd. Thousands [The Boston Centre is huge] of girls were worried. Rick looked as though he was fighting a smile. "The chicken pox." The entire audience gasped and said "NOOOOOOO" in synch.

Julie frowned. Now she'd have to put up with The Moffatts extra long. Or maybe she wouldn't have to put up with them at all; maybe they would cancel.

Rick Valentine asked for the crowd's attention. "However, we have an extremely talented boy band here. Imported from Canada." Rick smiled.

All of a sudden, totally unlike her, Ashley belted out "THE MOFFATTS RULE!!!" Then about 200 girls screamed. Julie looked in astonishment at her friend. Ashley wasn't paying attention to Julie though.

Rick smiled. "Looks like we have some fans out there! Well, without further ado, here is Scott! Dave! Clint! And Bob! Give it up for, THE MOFFATTS!" Rick exited the stage and the most gorgeous guy Julie had ever seen came out on stage and looked directly at her.
