chapter fifty-six

Kel climbed in the car and stared at the dashboard. She had no idea why all of a sudden her dad had come back. Then she remembered her brother. "What about Brandon?" Kel quickly questioned her mother, who was starting the engine.

Mrs. Archer got the engine running and didn't say anything. She knew there was something else Kel had to know. She had known ever since Kellyn was born she would have to tell her eventually.

"Mom?" Kel was staring to get worried again. How much should she have to hear in one day?

"Kellyn..." Mrs. Archer started. She put her hands on the wheel and closed her eyes.

"Why doesn't Brandon have to come? Mom, answer me!" Kel insisted.

"Kellyn, you and Brandon don't have the same father." Mrs. Archer finally admitted.

Kel's face dropped. In her entire life, Kel would never be able to explain how she felt at that exact moment. She had no idea what her mother was talking about. It had always been Brandon Archer, Kellyn Archer...and now all of a sudden he wasn't her full brother? She couldn't believe what she heard.

"Wh...Wha...WHAT?!?!?" Kel yelled at her mom. They were both in tears.

"It's a long story..." Mrs. Archer trailed off.

"Well it looks like I've got some time, Mom!" Kel said disrespectfully.

Mrs. Archer started to back out of the driveway. As she drove down their road and finally turned onto some other roads, then onto the highway, she was silent.

Kel was waiting impatiently for her mom to explain. "Mom, you better explain!" Kel insisted.

Mrs. Archer kind of shrugged and watched the road. "Kellyn, listen. I had Brandon when I was married to a guy named Rick Hysel. Then..." Mrs. Archer looked as if she was going to start crying again. Then she did slightly. "...just like your father, he walked off." Mrs. Archer could barely finish the sentence.

Kel felt bad for making her mother tell her, but she did owe it to her, for making her believe that Brandon was her full brother. "Oh, Mom. I'm sorry. WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?!"

"So this wouldn't happen, Kellyn!" Mrs. Archer said and indicated her tears.

"That's not fair to me though!" Kel yelled.

Reganining her composure, Mrs. Archer continued. "I just figured....it would be easier...on all of us. Especially when your father ran out on us."

Kel sat and shook her head. She couldn't believe how terrible this day was going.
