Sloan: Biography
The members of Sloan are Chris Murphy, Patrick Petland, Jay Ferguson and Andrew Scott. All four members lived in Halifax, but they are all now living in Toronto. This almost caused a break-up after Twice Removed. Luckily they worked out the problems are better as a band. I would describe them as independent people, but still being shy. That's kind of like their music and how they handle it. One time Chris Murphy described their personalities this way, "Andrew is the brooding one, Patrick is the metal head-slash-sensitive guy, I'm the wall-to-wall bridges with no choruses and Jay the cute, heart-wrenching adorable one."
Chris Murphy is probably the most easy going person of Sloan. I would also call him the leader of the group. He's not very shy compared to the others, especially when there on TV. He always seems to have a good response to questions asked by interviewers. He's also not really shy about his or Sloan's semi-geeky image. He's usually the first to admit it. Chris generally has a good sense of humour about things the other members would be shy about. Chris was also a member of the now broken up Super Friendz.
Patrick Petland seems to be almost the opposite of Chris. He acts very aloof. Normally he acts shy and down to business. He mostly acts that way during interviews. Most of his music doesn't really reflect that kind of withdrawn side of him, (like Money City Maniacs).
Jay Ferguson is very shy and reserved. He's often referred to as the "quiet little guy" or some thing along those lines. His songs seem to suit that image, they're usually slow quiet and a bit sad or melancholy. He appears to be happy and carefree as a person though.
Andrew Scott could be called the loner of the group or a reluctant pop star. He was the first to move to Toronto, where he is a member in two other bands (The Sadies and The Makers Mark). He hardly ever even records with the others. Andrew rarely gives interviews and tries to stay out of the spotlight.
