THe PiNK SpIdER

PSYCHEDELIC VIOLENCE OF WORDS :

I have thought long and hard about what to feature about Teru for this month's PiNK SpIdER column. Being a huge Teru fan, I wanted to make June's issue of Psychedelic Violence of Words a memorable one since his birthday falls in the month of June. In the end, I decided to let pictures do the talking and I selected a few of my favourite pictures of Teru and explain why I like the way he looked in the picture.

Also, I picked up a pencil for the first time to draw 2 pieces of fanart of this dear man to commemorate his 29th birthday, something I have never done before (i.e. drawing fanart). However, the effect is far from satisfying and those 2 pictures hardly looked like dear Teru.

Below are some of my favourite pictures of Teru, enjoy :

1. NYC Shuffle (p.9)

This is one of my all-tine favourite picture of Teru even though it just shows a back view of him sitting in the subway train. To be honest, I LOVE pictures which feature only Teru's back profile even though he is often touted as THE face of Glay. Here in this picture, although I can't see Teru's face, I can feel that he is enjoying this brief peaceful moment. The silence that this picture conveys is very comforting and it gives me a warm and cozy feeling whenever I look at him here.

I am really sorry but I wasn't able to get a scan of this picture. However, if you have NYC Shuffle, you would have the picture that I am talking about.

2. NYC Shuffle (p. 116)

This is another back profile of Teru that I love. Looking at him from behind standing on top of the building with his arms spread-eagled, I can feel Teru's dreams and aspirations. The picture is made all the more beautiful and the moment more poignant by having it in black and white.
One doesn't have to look at the face to tell how another is feeling - the back view of that person is just as revealing.

3. NYC Shuffle (p. 80)

I was carelessly flipping through NYC Shuffle in Kinokuniya and was in two minds about buying it when I came across this picture of Teru smiling. This picture decided for me that I would get NYC Shuffle because I just had to have that picture. I love to see Teru smile and this is one of the first few pictures in which I saw him smile when I first liked Glay. To date, that charismatic smile beautifully captured on film remains my ultimate favourite picture of Teru.

4. NHK GLAY SPECIAL

In this hour long special feature of Glay, Glay's "pure soul" '98 concert was featured and there was this scene of Teru holding a camcorder and filming the fans when he looked into the camcorder and flashed his megawatt grin. I love that scene because his eyes actually twinkled, ala anime style, when he grinned. He also reminded me of a boy delirious with joy. It's one of those classic Teru-moments deeply engraved in my memory.

Again, I have to apologize as I don't have the equipment to convert this from the videotape to jpg format.

5. Fanart 1 - Life Record In America

This is supposed to be Teru although you can't really tell it's him unless you have Life Record in America or you have seen the original picture before (left). I am disappointed in not being able to to draw Teru's face well, especially his eyes.

I like this picture of Teru because he seems to be at ease the way he stands and poses so languidly for the camera. I never really liked men to wear floral shirts because it only reminds me of the sleazy mafia but here, Teru carries that floral print shirt very well and because he is so charismatic, I am apt to believe that he would look very handsome in whatever he chooses to wear.

6. Fanart 2 - Life Record in America

This picture reminds me of the fact that no matter how old Teru grows, he would still be a boy at heart. For me, Teru is a little boy in a man's body as he always seem so excited about his "toy" -namely his laptop. Likewise, in this picture, he displays the inquisitive nature of a little boy and sometimes, for all that he has said and done, he seems to be more of a little boy than Jiro is. I like Teru to be like that because he lets me know that adults can have fun too. The only wish I have for him is that he remains so inquisitive about life even though it has not been a particularly smooth ride for him. My little Teku-chan. :)

This fanart is worse than the one above because I just could capture Teru's spirit in the eyes which I drew and I had to abandon this forbidding task in the end (otherwise the paper would tear from the relentless erasing) and I had to innovate by covering the part where his eye is supposed to be with hair. You would know what I am talking about by looking at the original picture above.

These 2 pieces of fanart that I have drawn of Teru confirmed my personal idiosyncrasy that the more I adore someone, the more impossible it is for me to draw a good picture of him. I am unlike Juu, who can capture Hisashi's eyes so well even though she adores him immensely. Kudos to Juu here.

I have come to the end now even though there are many more pictures of Teru that I like. I would have put all of them up if not for the fact that I lack a scanner. My sincere apologies about that but to end off, here's my little poetic birthday tribute to Teru :

The popularity of disapproval high
The illusions that prowl on you in the dark
The nights you thought you have done wrong
Enticing you from what you set out to accomplish
The sands of time dictate the path of right and wrong
Black, white and gray
The absolute ways of the world burdens and drowns
The fetters of custom suffocate the cries of happiness
The elusive dream that dances erotically before you
Flickering, teasing, casting an uncertain silhouette
Breaking through the iron dungeon of fate
The coronet of victory awaits.... Yours...

Dear Teru,
Happy 29th Birthday!
I wish you true happiness forever with your loved ones and I want nothing but the best for you.

*Teruhiko - for the uninitiated, Teru's name means shining with talent and I hope he shines for many more years to come.

* My fanart on this page were graciously scanned for me by Cherie.
