if you want to know more about The Offspring kilck on one of the skulls on your left The Offspring Group started around 1984 as a bunch of friends, none of whom can play any instruments. Then group was called "Manic Subsidial" and consisted of Bryan "Dexter" Holland, Greg Kiesel and James Lilja. Later on Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman joined - an important addition to the band as for some time he was the only one old enough to buy beer. In meantime members of group self-lernt playing their instruments and manage to find label ready to release their first album. Sadly James Lija prefered ginecology to music and for that important reason he left The Offspring. Still he was with band long enough to co-write lyrics for "Beheded", which he probably never tells his patients ('cause he woulnd'n have any if he does). Lilja was replaced with teeager Ron Welty. Later the only member who puts his real and complete name on the covers of The Offspring's albums. (He's also drummer in another band called Spinning Fish) In 1989 first, self-titled album by The Offspring, was released on Nemesis. Back then The Offspring were as poor as their label, so to glut album covers (for vinyls!) they invited some friends and offer free beer. Now you can see an importance of beer to that particular group. It's said that about 1000 of copies of that album are still in a circulation, but if you not rich enough to buy one of those, don't worry, Dexter re-released first album on his own label - Nitro in 1995. Anyway after their first release The Offspring were noticed bigger punk label - Epitaph, which released following albums "Ignition" (1992) and "Smash" (1994), the later happen to be bigges selling album released on so-called "indie" (= independent) label - some 10 millon copies. By the way, in time of "Smash" success Noodles was still working as school janitor and Dexter was studing molecular biology and thinking about Ph.D. title. Surprisely later on The Offspring moved to huge label searching for... artistic freedom. Columbia (part of Sony Music) allowed them to decide what they want to put on their albums. Back then it didn't paid back though - "Ixnay on Hombre" (1997) sold only 3 millons, but year later was followed by huge succes of "Americana". Which means mainstream public is not so stupid as it may seem. In meantime all members grew up and by now all of them are married, with children - not very punk :). But they trying to keep believe in their old ideals, keep in touch with their fans and stay underdogs, at least that's what Dexter claims. As Noodles said they just cuss less because of children. Dexter started Nitro with Greg K (now he owns it by himself) to help punk band which are ignored by TV and big labels, but still have someting to said - musicaly and lyricaly. By the way if you wonder why Bryan Holland was called "Dexter", it's because he's clever, don't get it? Well watch some cartoon network, it's never too late. If you wonder why Noodles is called so, well keep on... What makes The Offspring so special among hunderts of others bands? In my personal opinion that's unique wisdom of their lyrics and incredible passion in music. Listening to their albums you feel they do it neither for money nor because that's their job. You can feel they really like it and they have something to say to the others. Hopefully they'll stay the same even after huge success of last album. created by Elffaran any comments?
