So Fear and Loathing was playing at UCSD for two dollars, so what the fuck. I was sitting around at the new patio at the pub having a few pints with some friends of Jeff's who were very cool, and inevitably the conversation turned to the topic of drugs. So pretty soon the vial of Xanax was brought out, and we all took some, then went over to check out the movie. I mean, if you're going to go check out a drug film, shouldn't you be on at least something?
Unfortunately, sedatives were not the something we should have been on. The film seemed to last about 40 minutes (that's probably a good thing), and here's all I recall: Depp-as-Hunter stumbles into a casino and the carpet moves; later he's sitting in a hotel room full of water; there was a scene where he was stumbling out of a bar and everyone had turned into lizards; he got back on the freeway and got the fuck out of there. That's about it. And the only thing anyone had to say about it afterward was, "Well, the carpet part was pretty cool." That was the highlight for me also. Somehow I get the feeling, however, that if I was straight, it wouldn't have been much different. He did look convincingly bald, though, unlike Fred Ward in Henry and June. |
