(Back to AOR land)

1) Hi Mark! Appart from Mystic Healer you have released the Best of Drive, She Said, and the reissues of Touch and American Tears. Well, this year has been a great year for you, right?
It's been great to have all this new and older music released.

Check out the
Mystic Healer
review in AOR land.
It has got a 90%...

2) Let's talk a little bit more about Mystic Healer. Is it a recompilation of songs you have been writing along the years? what can you tell us about this project?
Well, it was actually an idea of Magnus at MTM to do a record of the songs written during the Michael Bolton "Everybody's Crazy" days. In other words the melodic rock. I had a number of songs written with Michael and others with Jack Ponte, Al Fritsch, Randy Jackson, etc. and we chose the ones that fit the direction of the record. Of course it needed a great singer and since it wasn't another D,SS record or a Flesh and Blood record, Magnus wanted a new singer. Enter Todd Googins who I've been working with for years and that was it. Todd and I also wrote the "single" for the record, "I Am The One". Some of the cuts were recorded years ago and we just put on new drums, guitars, vocals, whatever. The CD has alot of great performances by some of the really good players of this kind of music and it was great to finally get these songs out there.

3) Todd Googins is a great singer and I think he has a voice that blends the styles of some of your former singers Al Frisch and M. Bolton. Tell us something more about him?
My voice found its roots listening to the legendary AOR voices of Journey, Toto, Starship, Kansas and the like. Bolton caught my ear fromthe Fools Game period forward. Of course, one listen to the goldenthroat of Al Frisch and anyone's a fan. Thanks for the compliment. I'vebeen a singer-songwriter for years, playing in NYC and New England withvarious incarnations of solo based bands. 1998 found me at Mark's New York City studio where our collaboration, Mark's songs and Magnus'vision invoked Mystic Healer. I look forward to seeing the energy ofthe album resonate and am glad that we have been getting such great response.

4) This collaboration with Todd will be just a one-off project or do you still write songs together?
We are definitely still writing and working together and hopefully the album will have enough success to justify MTM doing another.

5) For me the ballad "I am the One" that you have written with todd is one of the best tunes in the record.
Thanks, we agree, though you must also pick up the Japanese version because MTM took off what we thought was a favorite cut "All Your Love" written with RandyJackson. That one ROCKS, and Todd sound a bit like AC/DC

6) Well, now let's talk about other things... Are you and Al Frisch still writting or playing together? Is there any chance for a Drive,She Said reformation?
Yes Al and I always work together from time to time. He's busy writing andsinging for various projects here, playing guitar and keys, as well. Whether we do another record depends on if someone asks us to.

7) And what about Michael Bolton? After having worked with him in his AOR albums what do you think about their present work?
Of course the world has recognized Michael as a great artist and singer. He is, I enjoy many of his newer songs.

9) I suppose that as a musician you are always involved in new projects. Are you currently working in new music?
Yes, ALWAYS!!

10) You have worked with lots of great musicians. Could you tell us something about the ones that you like most working with?
Where to begin. That would take days to answer. It's always so much fun to see a part, a solo, an overdub created. Sometimes it's drumming with Chuck Bonfante or Burgees, or guitar with Tony Bruno, Al Petrelli, Al Fritsch, Reb Beach, Bob Kulick, etc. They are all great and it's always a pleasure to BE THERE. Recently I did alot of bass work with Dave Santos and it was really amazing (he presently plays with Billy Joel).
Those guys are the tops in what they do and that's why I do it.

11) You have done lots of session works but how about touring? Do you currently do giggs?
We would love to tour. It's just about working out the logistics and it is expensive.

12) Appart from the music, you have also written a book. Tell us something more about it.
I invite everyone to visit www.Indigorecords.com. It's a spiritually oriented book entitled "The New Faith; A 'How To' Guide to Creating the Life You ReallyWant". I believe its the spirituality and philosophy to get us through this life creating our true desires and how to manifest these things.

13) Well I guess that's the end of the interview. I wish you all the luck with Mystic Healer and all your future projects...
Thanks Roger I look forward to hearing from you again.
