john keane

(Back to AOR land)

1) Hi John. How are you doing?
I'm doing great Roger! Just sitting here in Los Angeles having a cup of coffee talking to you.

2) Well, some people will know you due to your past work with the Keane Brothers. Looking back at those years, how do you remember them?
I think that for the most part it was a great experience. At a very young age we were exposed to some great musicians. Who later became good friends. We got a chance at an early age to learn what making records was all about. From arrangements to getting the right take. No many people get to experience that at such an early age. I have some fond memories during the making of our "Keane" albums. I think that the timing was a little premature in that the radio in the U.S.  was not ready for young kids as a serious musicians making records.  I look back on those times as a truly unique and rare experience.

3) Your last work "Straight Away" is just out. What can you tell us of this record?
This record was a labor of love. I recoreded and mix all but 2 tracks at my studio. It contains songs written over a 10 year period. For years I wanted to make a record of these songs but for one reason or another was not able to do it the way I wanted. So during the summer of 1998 I decided to tackle this project . I had some time off from my composing and some time away from the songs and was able to think of them a little differently. In other words I reapproached them with fresh ears. Perhaps the time away from the songs was the best thing that happened. The end result is an album with alot of different kinds of songs that I proud of.

4) As I have told you before I can hear Peter Gabriel and Third Matinee hints in many songs. Also some Sting. Have does people influence the record sound?
I first heard Peter Gabriel in the late 70's. I was blown away by his solo work. His focus on sound and detail was exceptional aswell as his unique approach to song writting. I think it fair to say I have been inspired by Gabriel. Right around the same time a band called the "Police " came on the scene. I loved what I heard from their 1st record. Sting songwriting was very hook oriented and to the point. The was not "fat" in these songs. The execution of the material was cool. It was kind of reckless and full of spirit. Needless to say I was hooked and  it certainly had an impact on my musical developement. I have heard the reference to Third Matinee although I'm not familiar with alot of their music.

5) Which other artists have influenced your music?
Steely Dan, Early Toto records, Earth Wind And Fire. There are so many it would be hard to name them all. I also listened to Jazz greats -Bill Evans- Miles  and Classical music . Great music comes in so many forms I think it is important to have a broad appreciation of all musical forms, it makes for a well rounded musician.

7) As a session drummer you have worked with many artists. Could you tell us something from these sessions?
My first professional session as a drummer was with Jay Graydon at the age of 18 on an Al Jarreau record called "Night Shift" for a movie by the same title. Shortly after I played on David Foster's 1st solo album.
Growing up in the L.A. session scene naturally lead to a career as a session drummer with friends like Jeff Porcaro and David Foster recommending me for sessions.

8) Which artists have you worked with?
Some of the most popular records I played on include Micheal Bolton, Chigago, Celine Dion, Richard Marx, Cher, Julio Iglasias, Kenny G.

8) Actually you are doing most of the work on the record from singing, drums, keys... but the guest list is impressive. Who else has worked in "Straight Away" and how has been the recording process with such great musicians?
It 's great to be able to work with the some of the best musicians in the world. Growing up and living in Los Angeles my whole life has certainly spoiled me as far as the level of musicianship. Most of the players on the album such as Mike Landau, John Pierce and Jason Scheff I have known for many years and meet during the "Keane Brothers" days. We occasionally laugh about old road stories. I met Jerry Scheff through Jason Scheff  and I wanted to work with him so I thought this record would be a great opportunity . Jerry was the only musician that I had not worked with previously. I was extremly glad he could do some playing on the album and as you can hear he is truly one of the finest musicians around.

"...An album with a lot of different kinds of songs..."

9) What's behind your favorite tunes in the cd?
The whole album is kind of like a time capsule. The songs were written over such a long period of time they bring back memories of different times in my life. "Darkside Of The Earth " is a favorite of mine. My first demo of this song was cut at Jeff Porcaro's studio in 1986 along with the song "More".The songs "She Cannot Be Denied" and Love is the last frontier" were recorded and mixed in 1992 at Total Access recording. Wyn Davis (the owner of Total Access) is also a longtime friend. We have worked on many projects together over the years.

10) You live in Los Angeles. How's the music scene there?
I've lived here my whole life so I don't know anything different. It's difficult to play clubs in this town because people don't seem to go out just to hear new music.  In the early 90's I was doing alot of club gigs. It got more and more difficult to keep playing around. Bands and artists seem to do more showcases than live gigs where you rent a hall out and invite record labels.Usually until you become establised  you'll have to promote your shows and create a following if you want to have a crowd at your gigs. There are only a few clubs that have remained open over the years many of the newer clubs typically don't stay around very long the seem to change ownership or just go out of business.

11) Your music is certainly fresh and innovative. Do you think "Straight Away" will find its space in the American market?
I hope so! I beleive that there is an audience out there for melodic pop. Things tend to be trend driven in the states and I don't think that my album is a fad or a trendy album.I have faith that over time I will find a home for this record in the U.S.

12) What about Europe...I think it's distributed through Intercord here, right?
Yes, I'm not sure if it is going to be available  thoughout europe yet.  I know it's available in Germany. Perhaps it will be available in places like France as an import. At this time I'm still working on finding more distribution for my album. With the help from such place as AOR LAND that might help to make it happen!

13) Well, that's the end of the interview. I wish you all the luck with the new cd which personally I think it's an inmense album. Would you like to say something to all the readers?
